Subject: Krusty's Log of Many Armies (UPDT. 6/18 IG)
|
 |
Focused Dark Angels Land Raider Pilot
|
hello all...
since theres no one army i am particularly active on working on right now, ive decided to make a log compiling all my recent work ive been doing...
as some background, i started playing fantasy with orcs and goblins around november of 2007, and started painting early in 2008...
from there i moved on to lizardmen, and in the summer of 2008 started 40k with a marine army...
i have only been really playing for about 15 months and painting for about 13 months, so my work is not nearly as good as it could be, but im not out to win any golden demons anyway, just to have fun playing and painting...
so far today, i still have the orcs, lizards, marines, have completed a tyranid army, and have vampire counts, necrons, and imperial guard...
so really in this blog, you may be lucky enough to find something from any of those 6 armies, but i do have things im focusing on right now...
right now i am mostly concentrating on finishing my salamander marines (in a home brewed color scheme), getting 3000 points of vampires done, and my imperial guard...
so for now, i have my latest models, the first things from my imperial guard army, which is meant to be an apocalypse detachment for my marines which i will later expand into a full scale army...
these 2 guys are just some commanders that i put a decent amount of time into to get a feel for the blues...
im not sure about the color scheme yet tho, i may go with white instead of the darker blue for the cloth, and keeping enchanted blue for their armour...
any suggestions?
soon i will be posting some pics of my vulkan model, some hive tyrants, and a few vampire things i am working on
let me know what you think, and enjoy!

They look pretty good. I'm not sure if another colour should be added in though, the blues look fine as they are.

Hmm very good,
I'm a fan of the style of painting you have chosen to go with. As for the extra colour, yeah i could see something else in there. Usually you have a contrasting colour for the carapace. This said i like the blue, so you could go with a lighter shade of blue for the uniforms leaving the really well paint carapaces as is. Keep up the good work

thanks for the feedback guys...
@ !?, i wasnt thinking of adding another blue, but replacing...
and in accordance with what techpriest said, i may change the uniform color to white (maybe with a bleached bone wash for some shading? would that work?) to make the enchanted blue of the armor stick out...
anywho, more pics here...
this ones a done (for the moment) hive tyrant with wings...
i know, i know, the wings arent supposed to come out of the carapace...
i have another set of wings to add to where the arms are; ill take a few days to do that when i get a few other armies at least mostly completed
as with most of my armies, my tyranids are a 'non-codex' color scheme, and there are actually a few different schemes through out the army...
the one the tyrant here has is uniform with my other tyrant and carnifexs, maybe later ill post some sample pics of other units...

I'm liking it and is that purple tint because of the picture or on the model?

nothing new today...
buttt, i do have pics of a standard bearer from my grave guard unit i will be finishing this week
as well as a WIP of a dreadnought drop pod...
once i retrieve the rest of my salamanders back from my friends house i will put up pics of vulkan and some other models, which will help explain the some what odd colors of the drop pod...

well i finally finished the dreadnought drop pod...
may not look like much, but it took at least 5 or 6 hours to finish total...
doing scorpion green over black takes a reaaaaaallllllyyy long time to get right...
but, here it is, along with some pics of my vulkan model...
i know my color scheme isnt codex salamanders; the chapter is called Black Dragons, a home made evolved chapter of the salamanders...
and im aware that my painting//greenstuff//converting skills are mediocre at best, but what i do gets the point across (i think...)
enjoy, feedback appreciated

Hi krusty
Going back to your IG for a minute, nice clean painting is a great way to start and your highlighting looks nice and smooth too.
I agree that you need to switch up either the cloth or carapace. One good "rule" to keep in mind when picking a scheme is to have three tones represented: a dark tone, a mid tone, and a light tone. I usually aim for a 60:30:10 mix (not necessarily in that order). A great example of this theory is the Dark Angel color scheme (Dark - Dark Green, Mid - Red, Light - Bone).
T apply this theory to your IG, your suggested change of the cloth to white would make that the light tone, leaving the carapace and boots/webbing to compete for the other two spots. I'd suggest hitting your brown with a Badab Black wash to make the boots/webbing the dark tone. I think you'd really see some pop from the blue carapace.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Dave

Like the IG officers, not sure about the Hive Tyrant. The drop pod looks pretty good, but I would put some more green, or some more detailing to break up the black. The dread looks good.

@ kingcracker; i totally agree
@ davetaylor; that helps alot
i was thinking of doing either black or brown wash on the boots to make em a little smoother and darker
as for the white, i am pretty much sold on the idea of a bleached bone//slightly brown wash over white for the cloth parts
the only thing im worried about though, is that i intended for this to be a -blue- army, not -white with blue-...
but i have a feeling the armour, helmets, and weapons being blue will keep it more blue than anything, especially since white is so neutral

I like your painting of the marines, but maybe someone else can back me up, isn't there a Chapter called the Black dragons who have a mutation that causes them to have spikes growing from their forearms?
Edit
Yes I thought so.

lol lots of feedback on the dread, maybe i shoulda put more pics of him up
anyway, got some zombies done since i have no white primer to do my grave guard with
as a warning, these models are not the best quality painting ever, but since they are 4 pts each and i still have 20 or 30 more to paint on top of the 45 i already have done, i dont really feel bad about getting them done quickly...
also, keep in mind that i will be basing this army all at one time once i finish painting, so the zombies surfacing from the ground will look alot better when i do that
well, enjoy
starting work on a vindicator for the sallies tonight...
btw, any ideas for a new name for my salamanders?
i got a few ideas, but nothing really stellar...
thnx for pointing out that black dragons is already taken btw
