Hi there,

I recently started looking into the 40K hobby again after a long break (since 3rd. ed.). Admittet, I haven't looked THAT much into the new rules yet and my initial goal is only to begin with a small well rounded army based on the Genestealer Cult minidex v2.0. Hoppefully some of you people can point out the most serious flaws and short comings. =)

I have tried to put a small 750 pts force together based on what comes in the minidex and a bit of feel I suppose.
Please take it easy on this returning player and bear with me if I'm not entirely updated with the newest changes to this game =)

H.Q.

Patriarch (90), claws
7x Genestealer bodyguard brood (114), rending claws
Transport : Brood Truck (25), transport (10), open-topped, turret mounted heavy stubber

Magus (50), power weapon, laspistol, refractor field
6x Hybrid Bodyguard brood (75), laspistols, scything talons, frag grenades
Transport : Coven Limousine (35), transport (8.), fixed forward mounted heavy stubber, smoke launchers

Elites

5x Hybrid Brood (45), laspistols, scything talon, frag grenades, 2 missile launchers (30)

Troops

10x Brood Brothers (65), shotguns, 1 scything talon (acolyte), frag grenades
Transport : Brood Truck (25), transport (10), open-topped, turret mounted heavy stubber

10x Brood Initiates (40), laspitols, scything taolon (acolyte)
Transport : Brood Truck (25), transport (10), open-topped, turret mounted heavy stubber

Fast Attack

2x Brood Truckers (90), turret mounted twin-linked heavy stubbers OR cult mortar OR autocannons (drop 1 HQ hybrid)

Heavy Support

Sentinel (40), lascannon (15), smoke launcher, searchlight

Totalt 749 pts.

Please comment!

Cheers

A fun and fluffy list, everything is in a transport and lots of models for the points spent. Fast and furious! I have a few suggestions for improvements.

No plasma pistol on the magus. He has only got two wounds.

The truckers should have matching armaments, since they need to shoot at the same targets. Either two heavy stubbers and an autocannon, or three mortars.

The sentinel with heavy flamer is a bit redundant. It mostly kills the things that your heavy stubbers and infantry can easily handle. It could possibly be useful if you play with a lot of terrain.

The Hybrid Monstrosity is pretty much the lists only chance at taking out tanks. If you get one, expect it to be shot to pieces because people are afraid of monstrous creatures (and rightly so).

A change to the rules that you might not be aware of is that after you have won a close combat and broken or destroyed the opponent, you cannot use your consolidate move to get into another assault. So if you break units on the charge (wich often happens with genestealers) you will be sitting in the open during your opponents turn, and will be shot at. You can lessen the risk of this by assaulting several units at once, by using cheaper troops as meatshields or by choosing your assault targets very carefully. It's good to break enemy troops during their turn, then you can move at will during your next turn.

I'd love to see some pictures of your cultists

Going to loose the plasma pistol and the sentinel then.

Getting a hybrid monstrosity (suggestions for model?) and seeding lictors (though I don't feel they fit in too well fluff-wise).

I'm a bit unsure about the bikers as they seem a bit squishy....but I love the idea of having them ..mmm...

I may add some strength to the stealers for extra "canopener" ability. Other suggestion for upgrades which may help in this department?

What is the better armament for the truckers? Mortar for masses (orcs, nids) and dense terrain, auto cannons for vehicles and heavy stubbers everything else?

I'm also considering adding a number of small hybrid squads with heavy weapons (missile launchers).

Adding satchel charges to all brood brother acolytes might also work.

Considering dropping the limos in favor of open-topped trucks (patriarch charge), even if it hurts to loose the "mobster" feel.

Her you go. Note these are about 4-5 years old by now. I'm thinking catachan junglefighters for brood brothers and empire millitia (fantasy) for initiates.

Thx for the comments!

There are a lot of fun ways to make hybrid monstrosities. The old Inquisitor game Genestealer model is the easiest. It will be significantly larger than a broodlord (Inquisitor is for 54mm models). Unfortunately it is no longer available, so must be found on ebay or similar. Carnifexes and tyranid warriors could be used as bases for conversions, feel free to combine with ogryns. Maybe look at the forgeworld models that are made for apocalypse.

Other ways could be to something mechanical, along the lines of slavaged/rebuilt mining equipment, the loader from the Aliens movie (wich I'm pretty sure I've seen collector models in appropriate scale of somewhere, probably horribly expensive). Speaking of which, the alien models from that range could be used for conversions.

There are a few 54mm models on GWs homepage that could be used. The Kroot mercenary, Damien 1427 or "Krash" are the most obvious.

I think most of your ideas are sound. Remember though that you should paint what seems like fun to play with. If you want a competitive army, use another armybook with the cultist models.

I like your colours. Very classic feeling!

The empire militia are awesome for civilians. Especially if you have some extra weapons to swap around. Don't be afraid to swap some equipment between the catachans and militias to unify the feeling of the army. Some odd weapons or extra claws here and there adds a lot of good looks.

I'm using a lot of Frateris Militia and Necromunda models. They are both wonderul for initiates and brothers, respectively. Check the Necromunda models on GWs page. They are all in metal so costly, but looks great, especially since you get a more "civilian mob"-feeling, rather than a military, and you can choose models that fits your vision of what your homeworld should look like. It might be possible to find them cheaper on ebay or similar.

On a side note, I'm going to try painting up a few catachans in blue worker coverall colours, rather than military green. I hope that will make them look more civilian.

Another idea for the Monstrosity. If you use the really old metal patriarch model (either on throne or on foot) then you could use the new metal broodlord as a monstrosity. Maybe beef it up a little or at least put it on a higher and larger modelled base to give it a bit more "monstrous" feeling.

O H I am in the Webway...

I like the theme a lot! You should probably have 1-2 lascannons at least on a BS3 model just in case. Otherwise, autocannon, heavy stubbers, and mortors for pinning are great. The list does look pretty good (but you need to get a lascannon in there somewhere!) and it sounds VERY mobile. The bikers seem like the biggest weakpoint, they just don't seem to pack that much punch for their cost imo, but I have never played/played against an army like this lol.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

I have the following options when it comes to lascannons:

Leman Russ
Sentinels
Brood Comrades

Other tank busting options may include:

Genestealers with +S
Missile launchers (hybrid brood, brood comrades)
Krak grenades (brood comrades)
hybrid monstrosity (monstrous creature)
meltaguns, plasmaguns and pistols in various squads

I'm not sure which of the above are the better options. My main worry is not being able to deliver the "canopener" before it is shot to pieces...

Updated the list.

Added 1 genestealer to the patriarch retinue

Moved the patriarch to an open-topped brood truck, e.g patriarch charge! Still unsure if this is strictly legal seeing how the HQ only lists limos as transport options?

Added a 5x hybrid brood with 2 missiles launchers,

Added a satchel charge (suicide bomber = 3" blast template, S7 AP3) to the brood brother squad.

Changed the configuration of the brood truckers be either all heavy stubbers, cult mortar or autocannons depending on the opponent/terrain.

Change the sentinel to carry a lascannon instead of a heavy flamer.

Dropped the bikers, too weak...

Hopefully the list has enough "can opener" ability while retaining it's mobility.

Comments?

Good to see your cult evolve.

First: There is no such thing as "legal" with this army. The codex is made by fans, and you need to ask your opponents permission to use it at all. My experience is however that most 40k-players enjoy playing against reasonable homemade armies. Following that, I can't imagine anyone (that you want to play against) complaining about you getting a truck for your patriarch.

Your army seems solid. It has lots of units for a 750p force, all but one is mechanised (and the hybrid MLers can infiltrate), so you will be very flexible. If you manage to concentrate your force you should do good with this army. I'd settle for autocannons on your truckers. They hurt light vehicles excellently and will help you outmaneuver your opponent.

I'm really looking forward to seeing your army painted and in action!
