It's clear-cut painting, but it's all way too glossy.

Sorry, I wouldn't pay for that service.

Not trying to be nasty, but if you're serious about getting going with this, I would strongly suggest building yourself a lightbox and getting some decent pictures of finished miniatures.

The miniatures you have shown look to be a decent tabletop standard, but the pictures really aren't doing you any favours.

I was wondering what color primer do you use under the rhino, as well as what color did you use for the reds.

Smooth? It's lumpy and probably covered in a dozen layers of paint, that's why it's rough and gritty.

All I can say is, good lord.

Again Im not trying to be nasty, but none of what you have posted is something I would pay for. That rhino is terrible and looks like its been repainted a zillion different times.
Heck Ive lost a hand and can paint smoother than that.

So, sorry to not sugar coat it, but don't give up the day job.

@Cyporiean: Thats a very nice model. That's your $3 work? Post some $7 work Cheap Git

Lol well I went and derailed this thread faster than a sack of potato on a rail line haven't I. I didn't so much as loose my painting hand as loose 3 fingers and mangle up the thumb and remaining one pretty bad. Was just a nasty accident. I shan't go further than that (this is an internet forum after all ) but needless to say i used to be right handed. While I slowly slowly am getting better with my left and still cannot write in anything but shaky print with my left, I can still paint better with it than that rhino up there.

uhm. i wouldn't bay 2 dollars a squad for that paint job. the paint is too thick, causing the texture to be bumpy. and i can't figure out why the models are so glossy without a gloss varnish. which people don't cover the whole model with typically. acrylic paint means water is your friend. and commissioned painters will typically hand paint numbers and chapter logos/squad markings etc.

I am going to have to strongly agree with what everyone else is saying.

You need to thin your paints and do some highlighting and shading.

here is a model that I did on commission for $5

you should work on your skills and come back in a couple of months.

Just to be different - I support you on this one. There's a LARGE class of people out there that probably want to have painted armies, but don't have the time or ability to paint their own, and don't want to drop the high prices that "artist"-level painters charge. Look at the guys at BrushThrall.com; their stuff is gorgeous, but it's running 200 bucks for a WarJack or infantry squad because it's so good (and that's actually cheap when you consider the time, at a "professional" rate of about $10 US per hour). The CamoSpecs guys who paint BattleTech minis charge around $40-50 per mini.

I've been doing this for about 3 years now - I've got several "quality standards" that I paint my stuff to, and the biggest seller by FAR is the lowest level of painting (that is, basic tabletop standard - each color on the model having a basecoat, wash, and drybrushed highlight layer) because it's cheap and it's a fast turnaround time (I can knock out a squad of IG in about 7 hours of painting - primed model to spraying the matte varnish). Especially right now, while everybody is short cash, if you have to have a painted army and can't or won't do it yourself, taking a qualitative hit on the paintjobs is, for the casual gamer, extremely attractive.

Just because his stuff isn't Golden Demon-worthy doesn't mean he shouldn't be trying to sell the paintjobs. Sure, they could be better, but they're LOADS better than the people who literally dip pieces into paint pots or just leave them primered or grey. He should also make it a point to get better (and use matte varnish!), but he's not stupid for trying this.

I'm with you Swordguy.. the OP is charging the right amount for his level of painting and with time, he will only get better.

He's not charging 50 dollars per model, so he's not going to get rich quickly but he also isn't trying to pass of his ability as something it's not..

Cudos tabletop, I hope you get a few sales from this.

QFT completely. Everyone has to start somewhere and what better way to practise painting than to offer those who require a painted army for cheap. A lot of people don't even paint their armies nowadays (which hurts my soul) so this is perfect... cheap and they are at least PAINTED.

Good on you, keep it up!

While the thinning the paints comment is fair, the amount of highlighting and shading really comes down to cost.

If you're charging bare minimum prices, than a bare minimum paint-job (basic colours and based) is fair.

hmm... This one deffinetly has me thinking both sides of the argument. I can totally see someone that doesnt have the time or want, to actually paint an army. This is a pretty cheap route to go. Honestly the paint job isnt horrible. He needs to read some simple tips on sprucing those up, but obviously hes wanting to make some type of profit. If he were to of posted those pics as "this is my work" most of you would of at least said not bad, and even gave tips to improve.
Good luck on your venture man, read some of the nasties for the tips and improve. Your pretty close to doing a really good job

Table Top. I have been painting for over 14 years. 5 of those years have been on a professional level. I have painted litterally hundreds of figures for people. That being said, as others have said, you need to start somewhere. I would suggest investing in "How to paint Games-Workshop Figures" Not that you are going to be able to paint like a GD artist or a 'Eavy Metal artist after reading it, but it will give you lots of tips and things to try. It is well worth the $25. Especially if you are going to attempt to have a go at this very time consuming job.

As far as your costs. I charge way too little for what I do, at about $6 per figure you are assured to get a very well blended, highlighted, lined and composed figure. Most places I look at (when I check out the competition) charge around $10-$15 for the level that I paint most of my figures. That being said I also get more work then they do I would dare to imagine. Too much at times my wife complains to me. What I am getting at with this is, know your limits, price accordingly, and know, as we have all told you here, that you will improve.

www.coolminiornot.com/artist/terryanddeidra

Check this out. This is my Cool Mini Page. This will give you an idea of what I am talking about. Gauge what you charge off of this. I am not trying to say that I am ready for the GD competition because I am not. However I have won a few best painted
More what I am trying to show you is compare the work and the cost. Then put your prices accordingly and you will do fine.

Another thing that I do that you may want to try is this:
Offer to paint for free. What I mean is I offer to paint (for a new customer) the first units command for free.
What I do is this, I have them send it, I paint it, and send it back, if they like it then they can send the rest to be painted, if they do not then they have lost nothing. You on the other hand have only lost 3 hours of work, and potentially have another customer. Consider it advertising. Eitherway you are painting and getting better.

I hope that this helps, if not, well, I was trying.

Back to painting......

I think for the prices he mentioned, this is a hell of a deal. Consider my life (why not, I am awesome): I work 4 jobs, am finishing doctoral coursework, and have a newborn at home. My 40k time is limited to Saturday afternoons, if I'm LUCKY, and that's just to play--painting minis, even if I was good at it (I am not), is something there's just no time for.

I realize there's a professional pride thing here, as everybody's pulling out their own paintbrushes to see whose is bigger. However, the first thing I did when I saw those photos and prices was check out bitkingdom and pondering future purchases; at these prices, and with my schedule, this sounds like a sweet arrangement!

Jesus!, how much of a paintjob are people you expecting for 3 (three) US dollars!

Though, with prices like that I would be suspicious of a scammer. I'm not pointing fingers here, I'm just sayin' I would need more re-assurance before I sent off my mini's.

Personally, I think these models look great for the price. And to be honest, some of my models look about the same. As mentioned, we're talking $3 a model or more. I painted one of my models last night - and just to paint the primary color took almost an hour.

This guy offers a great service for a great price. Those that want pro-quality will pay more, but those that just want an army painted and ready to play can't go wrong with this guy. At least for your rank-and-file grunts, right?

EDIT: I took a second look at his work. Some of it is REALLY GOOD! I mean, I'd be proud to put it on my table. I think some of this work has photographed better than others is all.

Fond of this one in particular:
