I was at my FLGS buying paint and they were plumb out of green paints, well, those suited for my orks, so I picked up something called Citadel Foundation Gretchin Green.

It looks like paint... it smells like paint... it tastes like paint... what is it?

My only guess by the name foundation is it's paint-on primer but if so why would they sell it in a considerably smaller pot than the standard paints when you need MORE primer than standard paints.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Foundation paints are base coat paints, not primers. For example,if you prime a model black then go to paint blood red on it,it will look blotchy, but with the foundation paint mechrite red applied first the red will come out solid.

I paint extensively with foundations, cause it gives better coverage.
For instance, all my Sisters of Battle's loincloths are painted Mechrite Red because i only need one layer on top of the black undercoat whilst Scab Red has to be painted in several layers to not make the black shine through.

So in my experience, if you have lots of rank n file that you want to finish quickly... foundation is the way!

EDIT: Too early for me

Higher Pigment to Medium ratio = foundation paint. Good for the above said reasons, and you can also water it down a bit to make it more like a regular GW paint. I find they don't work real well watered down, though, but I imagine if you used an actual acrylic medium it would work better.

I just used the foundation on a quartet of Lootas. The way I paint is I take one color, paint all components with that one color, and move on. I noticed by the end of painting hte flesh on the second ork the foundation paint was definitly caking and not going on very smoothly at all.I don't know about it cracking as I'm not there yet but will let you know if it does.

I love foundation paints, and the washes. great for making a painters life easy! I always water down the foundation paints, means more coats, but a smoother result (it can be very thick and obscure details otherwise).

If they are caking or cracking you are putting them on way to thick. Make sure to water them down like normal paints, maybe even a little more.
