I was told to day by a local GW blue shirt (they dropped red in the UK a while back) that they'll be making their own
weathering powders. These are to be released after the new How to paint Citadel Tanks book is released, just after
the new Russ kit hits. I hadn't heard this anywhere else so thought I'd pass it on.

You have to use something to fix them to the model.

I believe you can use isopropyl alcohol, though I'm not sure as I don't have any weathering powders yet.

've been trying to get my hands on some locally, but no hobby shop carries them. I'll probably just order some of the MIG sets i've seen online.

Ah.... this is interesting...

It will certainly raise the lvl of painting no doubt . Now people will know whats available to them , and what product exists for it!.

However, if its over priced and sub par quality, people will still look else where -_-

You can use isopropyl alcohol to fix them easily enough, and it's thinner than varnish so it may be easier to work with. I think there is a company named MIG that makes some good pigment sets, or so I've read.

Dakka. You need more of it. No exceptions.

I have been using the Tamyia ones recently on Tallarn Armor. They are pretty interesting to use, I have ended up "painting" the tanks wuith the powders, lots of messing about but love the results. A very real look as far as I am concerned.

I do a layer of powders then use flat coat on it then another layer and so on. I found out if you dont, its VERY easy to leave finger prints in the powders, mixed witht he oils in your skin and they are quite hard to erase.

I wonder what GW will come up with but I bet they will be WAY over priced.

MIG has some really cool sets aimed at adding specific weatherings, like mud (with a variety of mud/dust pigments) and rust (has light rust/old rust/black soot/etc)

Bingo!

They are great, but when GW does them --- wait a minute!

The Foundation Paints and Washes were very nice...

Maybe???

This is great news, as GW will release a great palette of colours, provide good instruction for them and make them in such a way that I don't need a feth-ton of special bottles and sprays to properly use them. This and a lack of availability of the extra crap needed to properly use them has prevented me from trying them.

Why buy GW when you can get the Tamiya ones? It's not like Tamiya is an unknown brand that only an elected few can buy in their mystic shops.

Most Tamiya stuff is easy to get but some of their supplies are elusive as feth. I'm really smitten by their weathering kits and mud sticks, but they are nigh-on impossible to get and while they are around on-line, P&P plus taxes make it not so profitable. Same with their powders really.

Probably in the worst case ordering online (and I could buy these kits before coming to Japan when I was in Spain) will break even when GW applies their mark up.

MIG also do a couple of DVDs that show you how to use them. They're a little on the expensive side but IMO well worth the £££s.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I'm waiting to see if they'll be any good/ cost effective.
I've bought some Tamiya powders before, but they came in a small box(what is basically a manly women's make-up compact) and so weren't powdery but solid. with a little brush/sponge (again make-up compact style) to apply them with.
I got so little out at a time and it wasn't what I'd read about pigments (like the MiG stuff) that I was putt off them.

So I'll give the GW ones a try (in the shop for free!) and if they're crap hunt down the MiG ones online again.

Apone: What they don't show you in the little booklet is that you have to break the powder up first. Just gently tap the little squares with a hobby blade and you'll see what I mean.

GW sure does notice trends. People finally start using military modelling techniques and a year later GW is "releasing" their "own" powders. I use quotes because my money is on them buying a redistribution license or something with their labels on someone elses (MIG) product.

As to sealers, alchohol, and mineral spirits (white spirits) both work as well as MIGs own pigment fixer. I do wish MIG stuff was easier to get in the states though.

MIG has been around a while. I've always wanted to try them but could never find them locally. I finally gave in and just recently ordered another brand I heard was good, Doc O'brien's. It comes in a set which is what I wanted. I got mine from Micromark, here. Still waiting for it to arrive, I just ordered it 2 days ago.

It would be nice if GW did release powders though, but I can see this making a big mess for the kids And I'm sure GW will also sell a $28 3oz bottle of alcohol to go with it.

I tried the tamiya weathering "powders" that were in what looked like a girls makeup case with a little sponge on a stick to apply it but I didn't really like it. it seemed a little on the oily side, maybe I just didn't try hard enough to make it work good.

Another thing I heard you can use is chalky pastels from an art store, you can probably run your xacto blade down the side to shave off some powder and use that the same way as the pigments.

When you use the alcohol, does it really fix the pigment to the model good? or will it still rub off eventually as you play? Do you still have to spray varnish your model no matter what? Would you want to varnish first, then add powders, then varnish again?

Vallejo also has pigments. I have a bottle of dark grey slate but none of the other things needed to apply it.

This should be interesting to see what GW comes up with. For my money, GW metallic paints are the best, so there is some hope for these weathering powders.

I wonder if they will be using their own formulas or if they will just be repackaging an existing company's product, like they do with green stuff? If they repackage then it shouldn't be too hard for the internet community to figure out who made them initially and then subsequently get them for a more affordable price.

i disagree on the metalic paints front. ive been using Valejeo metalics and found them easier to paint.
I will stick to MiG because i find they have a better choice and do box sets that are well thought out, and they even recently released a sci-fi set which is an encouraging sign that they are starting to recognise the gaming world

I know I've seen a video of a person using a MiG rust pigment set with a brush to convincingly rust up a Land Raider lascannon sponson. Looked like he was basically running a brush with pigment where you'd expect the darker orange rust to be, again with some lighter orange around in lesser amounts, finish with some black pigment to "burn" the ends of the barrels, and seal the whole thing with a quick application of isopropyl alcohol. All done with a brush (so you shouldn't have to worry about finger oils and such) and didn't look any harder to do that drybrushing so it can't be that tough to do. I think their just happens to be a creative wall there; people with less experience and knowledge perceive most techniques that look realistic to be inherently difficult. I don't see why you can't just pick up black, orange, and less orange pigments from Tamiya and do the same thing with an old small brush.

The video is there, somewhere. I found it reading Something Awfuls GBS warhammer forum, if anyone wants to trudge through all that.

Edit: spelling and cleaning up unfinished thoughts.
