IG List

1 CCS Chimera Melta x4
3 Veterans Chimera Melta x3
2 PBS Chimera
3 Medusa
3 DevilDog

Nothing was in a squadron so the medusas and devil-dogs were all split to max out the FO slots. Every vehicle allowed had Heavy Flamers.

Orks

1 KFF Big Mek
30 Lootas
59 Shoota Boys
19 Grots and Runtherd
3 Battlewagons (each outfitted w Rockitts x4, Boarding Plank, Deffrolla, Red Paint)
3 Deffkoptas (Rockitts and BuzzSaw)

Nothing was in a squadron so the Deffkoptas were all split to max out the FO Slots. Each wagon carried 20 boys with one carrying 19 and a Big Mek.

Mission: Annihilation
Deployment: Spearhead
Initiative: IG deployed first and went first. Orks failed to seize.

IG Deployment: Everything deployed as close to the center of the battlefield as possible with the exception of the Medusas which were placed farther back to exploit their 48" range.

Ork Deployment: Battlewagons placed up front as close to the center as possible carrying the Boyz. Lootas were placed in a nearby forest to give cover. The second 15 Lootas were deployed behind them also enjoying cover. Grots and Deffkoptas were all placed in reserve. Deffkoptas did NOT outflank.

Turn 1

IG

Devil-Dogs move forward 18" in an effort to close on the Lootas with their heavy flamer templates who are now less than 12" away. Remainder of the IG army shoots at targets within range. Medusas shoot at the Battlewagons which all manage to make their cover saves with help of the KFF. Multi-Laser fire peppers the Lootas in cover. They end up losing 4 of 15.

Orks

Lootas fire on the closing Devil Dogs and manage to immobilize and weapon destroy the first and shake the second. A battlewagon rams the third and destroys it. The immediate threats now dealt with, the other battlewagons fire rockitts at the closest chimeras and destroy one while failing to hurt the other.

Turn 2

IG

Remaining chimeras unload more multi-lasers into the closest Lootas in an effort to get them to test and kill several, causing them to flee at the end of shooting. Medusa fire destroys one battlewagon and immobilizes another.

Orks

All three reserve rolls are successful for the deffkoptas and they arrive on the long table edge. One shoots and then assaults and destroys the shaken Devil Dog and the remaining two take out a PBS Chimera with rockitt shots. The PBS survivors empty out behind the wreckage of the vehicle. The destroyed battlewagon has emptied 20 orks who dive into cover in a nearby building. The big mek attempts to repair and fails but the immobilized wagon still fires 3 rockitt shots at the closest chimera and destroys it. The untouched wagon does the same to another Chimera and stuns it. It opts not to move any closer to the IG lines and instead hangs back with the intention of simply shooting rockitt shots for as long as possible. The remaining lootas shoot at another mech vet chimera but fail to hurt it.

Turn 3

IG

Medusas turn their attention to the deffkoptas and wipe all 3 of them out with some multilaser support. Remaining multilasers fire at the orks now entrenched in a building and manage to kill only 2/20.

Orks

Grots arrive and sit on the far back corner of the deployment zone out of danger. The boys in the building move to spread out further making them less of a viable target then run another 3". The remainder of the army chooses not to move and simply opens fire. Lootas destroy another chimera. Battlewagon Rockitt spam destroys the CCS chimera. The big mek repairs the immobilized battlewagon.

Turn 4

IG

Medusas resume shelling the last 2 battlewagons. One manages to live through a KFF. The other is destroyed and 19 more boys and a Big Mek fall onto the battlefield. They are wounded with ensuing multi-laser fire and almost wiped out. A failed leadership roll means they run but a boss-pole allows another morale test which is successful. There are only 4 boys left from the original 19.

Orks

The surviving boys camp in the building and the KFF moves into the larger group to stay alive and not yield another kill point. Lootas dump fire into another troop chimera and destroy that one too along with half the vets inside who then fail a leadership roll and run off the table.

Turn 5

IG

Medusas continue to shell the final wagon and pop it open without a cover save. The orks spill out onto the battlefield and survive with cover the ensuing shots. The remaining guard troops hide behind their destroyed vehicles in an effort to not yield a kill point.

Orks

Remaining foot slogging orks remain in cover in an effort to not die and use run rolls to move farther away from the guard troops and lasgun fire. The final Loota unit is forced to move forward to actually have a target to shoot at. A die roll does not end the game and we go to turn 6.

Turn 6

IG

More medusa shelling on foot orks doesn't yield great results because of cover saves. A few boys die but not enough to impact the game. The final PBS chimera moves into cover to attempt to avoid Loota shooting.

Orks

Foot slogging orks spread out and remain in cover to stay alive. The surviving loota unit opens fire at the last PBS chimera and destroys it. This forces a concession as killing off two more units of remaining boys is almost impossible with only medusa fire.

Result:

Spoiler:
Orks win on kill points 10-8

Thoughts:

This is a very tough matchup for Orks because the typical strategy of running at your opponent and assaulting is folly. The reason it was a victory as we both determined was precisely because the orks decided to turn it into a shooting matchup at 24" or greater range. This took the melta fire and heavy flamer fire out of the equation and basically turned it into multilasers and medusa fire vs. lootas and rockitts. In fact there wasn't a single assault with the exception of a single deffkopta. That's of course a rarity for orks. If you had told me the orks would have won this matchup with only a single assault I would have thought you were crazy. I think if the battlewagons hadn't made ALL of their cover saves on turn 1 it would have been a lot closer as they wouldn't have benefited from the rockitt spam in the ensuing rounds 1 and 2. The Annihilation matchup also benefitted the orks as they had the luxury of never closing in to melta range. Taking objectives would not have favored them.

I still don't like the orks chances in this matchup and I probably lose 3 out of 5 if we play it over again but it's clearly not unwinnable with a correct list and sound strategy.

Well played Nash. Sounds like you had some good dice love and sound tactics.

Are you guys planning a re-match between those lists?

Definitely. We've actually played this matchup a number of times with minor list tweaks here and there. My record is like 1-6 against it now .

The difference from previous games was the rockitt spam on the wagons (which Shep suggested) and the strategy of not charging (which Shep also suggested). Thanks Shep for letting me win this one!!

I will likely play this list again with some minor tweaks. I'd like to figure out how to get more lootas in the list and put kannons on the wagons for additional firepower. I believe Shep's list is airtight the way it is. He's run it numerous times and wins far more often than he loses.

Ahh yes the house game grudge matches between worthy adversaries.

Sinking those Devil-Dogs early must have been gratifying.

Damn this was epic. It shows how hard it is for orks to deal with armor spam.

Nice job! Way to play against the ork traditional strength (close combat) and be patient. That is what kills me more than anything is that I get impatient. Nice to see that Shep can lose with that list ;-)

Nice! A quick question tho, did Shep advance the chimera's at all or did they stay back near the medusa's?

He did not advance them and in fact moved them backwards on the second turn in response to me moving my battle-wagons forward 7 inches. The chimeras were sitting in front of the medusas for most of the game.
