Subject: 9mm casings in 40k

After going to the shooting range with a friend a few days ago, I took a few of the spent casings from his 9mm pistol to use for spent artillery casings on my 40k bases and crews. However, I don't know which models have a gun to which this size casing is comparable. Anyone have any suggestions for what to use them with? I'd appreciate it if your suggestions were either Ork, SM or maaybe IG, but any ideas for any armies are welcome.

Orks have many Big Gunz in different sizes, Rokkit Launchers, BIG Shootas, etc ... pretty much anythiong bigger than a shoota!
And I'm sure Flash Gitz would want 4' bore ammo!
Post some pics with a casing or two beside some BOyz and we'll get a feel for the size.

The IG Basilisk comes to mind right away. Maybe a superheavy like a Baneblade/Banesword as well

The lemon russ has about that size of a barrel IIRC. I don't care what you put them next to, they will look awesome.

I have compared my .25ACP (yes, 0.25 Caliber, NOT .45ACP) to the old Basilisk rounds and they match quite nicely.

Okay, great ideas from everyone so far. Seems the consensus is the IG Basilisk and Leman Russ, potentially some orky shootas. I only own orks and SM presently, but I've been considering getting some IG for giggles. So far, it all seems to be working well.
My tingling newbie-senses tell me that the SM don't really have traditional ordinance that would use such casings, correct?
As far as pictures go, I don't have a camera handy. To give basic proportions, the casing is about as tall as a night goblin, which I assume puts it at standard grot-height. When placed next to a model on the table (as opposed to the base), it comes up to an SM's waist and comes up to about chin-level on the average ork boy. Does that help any, BlackSpike?

SM have the Vindicator, which uses an ordnance sized casing. The closest real casings that match in size to the Vindicator shells would be a .32 round. 9mm isn't to much bigger visually, you could get away with using a 9mm casing for a spent Vindicator round.

9mm cases are way too big. .22 LR and .22 short are perfect for artillery shells for Cadians. Anything larger looks as cartoonish as a Leman Russ battlecannon. A .32 mihgt work (would still be huge) but I've never actually seen a .32 casing.
I've used them for basilisks and several comrades have asked me to retrieve same from the range.

Its almost exactly right for a Vindicator. Remember the Vindicator comes with a cannon round that you hang off the back of the tank. I held that plastic round up to a .32 round, and they are almost exactly the same width by eyeball measurement.

Yep, .22 or .32 sounds like the way to go here. Although, if you're looking to make a Deathstrike Missile Launcher, I reccommend a spent .50 bullet. The FLGS uses them for the display Deathstrikes and it looks really good.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I'm not sure what size bullets these are (and they are plastic replicas!), but they make quite a nice Rokkit Launcher.

9mm (aka Parabellum aka Luger) casings are 9X19mm, 45 ACP is 11.43X23 mm. .40 S&W(10X22mm) or 10mm (10X24mm) and especially .357 Sig would also work great for big guns, since it's necked down.
I just got a few rounds off the mantle and figured out that the inner diameter of the current Vindicator is about .30". 7.62X39 looks great, .30 Carbine or .32 Colt Revolver look better, but the best match would be .30 Mauser Automatic, it's even shaped the same as the round that comes with it.
The SM small arms are supposed to be caseless, but they sure do have a lot of casings flying out their ejection ports in pictures. The shell that comes with the Vindicator has a traditional shell casing, but it's about .25", too small for the bore.
I made a full scale replica of a bolter shell out of a chunk of high wall shotgun brass after I cut off the plastic hull and a 20mm Oerlikon AA shell, it looks perfect..I just got some 12 gauge All Brass shotgun hulls that look like a .75 Magnum. (12 Gauge brass is .75" outer diameter, 20mm inner diameter, Boltguns are .75 caliber, perfect match)
