thin your paints a bit and practice painting in the lines. Dont worry about details such as eyes, instead, focus on painting an even coat over the entire model.

Ok guys be nice.

Not only is he young, but he's new.

They're not bad... but you still need to stick to the lines!!

Practice, practice, practice though!

Just take you time on them.. if you rush, they will look god awful.

Not only that but posts like "Rub it out" and "urm what?" aren't going to help you out- just letting you know.

Just abide by rule number 1 of painting- HAVE FUN!

Cheers,

Jack.

Urm what? is a question indicating confusion, can mean "urm what are you talking about?".

Just leave it. As mentioned before, he's a "noob" to the site.

He'll get use to it eventually.

Just chill... maybe give him some advice while your at it?

@ Original Poster- The Assault on Black Reach set (the one you have) is great for starting out. Just keep practising on these models and after a while, you'll be ready to learn new techniques.

If you ever want some painting/modelling tips feel free to PM me. I'll get back to you as soon as I can with them, and I can help you on lots of different things.

One quick reminder- Use proper grammar and punctuation to the best of your abilities. It will help you get better comments and criticism on your posts.

Cheers,

Jack.

The best way to improve is:
1. Read how other people have done it.
2. Practice.
3. Practice more.

Dakka has some good tutorials. I also like Brushthralls, although they work on Privateer Press stuff, not GW products.

I'm assuming you have some extra marines left over (methinks you bought AoBR).

I'd first start on some new marines first. With AoBR you can practice painting a kind of flesh and shabby, piecemeal armor (orks) and the spit-and-polish of sorts armor that is Space Marines.

Here's some tips...

1. Don't clump the paint on. You don't have to cover the model with paint in one go; if after one layer is applied spots are still showing through, wait for it to dry and then evenly go over it.

2. Don't put as much paint on your brush. Dipping it up to the metal neck is bad for the brush, if nothing else. The paint dries and splays the bristles, so you won't be able to paint finely as well.

3. As stated before, don't worry about eyes or the fine details yet. Start off by basecoating the model - usually black for darker schemes and white for lighter schemes (in this case, basecoat white and then apply Ultramarines Blue). Then, work your way up. I tend to paint in batches, so I'd paint everything white (or spray, for larger projects) then everything blue, and so on. I don't like to keep opening my pots of paint, but that's just preference.

4. Drybrushing - this is an advanced technique to some but it is actually fairly simple and the end result is very good looking. Take a brush, ideally old (bristles every which-a-way) and then dip the tip in paint. Then, cinch the paint out by wrapping a tissue around it and getting most of the paint out of the brush. Then, gently stroke the place you want drybrushed. This way, the paint catches the raised spots and leaves the recesses alone. This is a simple way to add depth to the model.

I am eager to see some new models you've painted. Just keep practicing, if you saw my first models you'd genuinely think they sucked (seriously, no exaggeration in the least).

Keep it up, don't give up!

Just by the looks of it. Stay in the lines, even coats, and not leaving black unpainted areas will improve the paintjobs by far Just keep at it and post new pics when you think youve accomplished some of the tips everyone has given. So that we can help you farther!

Dont worry about your first few just learn your way around paints and such
learn to water it down a bit next then high lights and after that run wild as you will be at table top standard and nothing is stopping your from going from there.

p.s take your time dont rush and start from the bottom up (armour first then work your way to details and such)

good luck

I assume on "Beakie" the red paint around the body is blood. I would suggest just working on painting basic body parts before you worry about "flavor" like blood, gore, mud, glare, etc. Once you feel really good about basic base painting, then you might want to experiment with the detailing.

Also, don't be afraid to go back and paint over areas where you have gone outside the lines. There's no rule against a "do over" in painting minis! This might help you with the eyes.

I suspect also, although I could be wrong, that you may not be using a detail brush. If your brush size is too big, you'll never get in the lines.

Hope that helps.

I give you credit for posting your work for critique. I have been painting historical wargaming minis for 30 yrs and I am so humbled by people's great work on this site- and I haven't been brave enough to show my 40K guys here. You deserve kudos for throwing up your pics for feedback.

Well that is going to be a big problem for you if you want to be a bit cleaner in your painting. Even if you just get to a craft store, find the art section, and find something less "bristly" than the starter brush(and something with a finer point)- you should get better results(with practice).

When I first started, I didn't prime my models and I had a brush that was for model cars...my first 10 or 20 figures looked absolutely horrible.

That being said...my stuff started to look far far better when
1) I got some smaller brushes
2) Primed my models
3) started to take my time
4) stopped using big globs of paint on my brush and not try to cover up the base paint in one pass....you're gonna have to do a light/thin layer and then maybe 2 more thin layers.

That might be one big thing not to do. Blue over red wont come out too good. Do a dark blue followed by a light blue, then add blood effect later... Will come out much much better

Again, trying to be nice about it- I suggest you work on basic painting before doing "effects". Once you've got base-coating on then work on highlights, then "special effects". Just my two cents. We all wanted to be master painters out of the chute too, but you will find you need to work on basics first and paint MANY minis before you try out tricks and effects. I know it isn't easy to hear, but in the end its honest, good advice.

Agreed. Also, smaller brushes can be procured at any hobby shop or larger store that sells a modicum of art supplies. They even (sigh) sell it at GW if you like pain.

Actually the redshirts at the local GW are helpful in this area. You're their target market and can learn lots of technique.

You're giving advice to a young-blood, Fraz, so I'm sure you can be forgiven

warboss spinetwizta : Lots of good advice here ( if you don't count the idiots just out to pick on a noob ), so take note, and DON'T be afraid to ask questions if you see someone else post good work.

Not much advice I can add that hasn't already been said, so I'll tell you what I tell every other newcomer to this obsessively addictive hobby...

It's all about patience for me. Watering down paint and practicing brush control all takes time, so patience is a must, but it pays off in the end. I still run around showing off my latest model after working on it for days lol.

My five year old daughter asks me about painting (alot) and I tell her it's like her coloring books. If I work real hard to keep the colors in the lines I end up with a pretty picture. Everything after that is extra credit.

I'll be honnest, it's not good. But don't be disheartened, practice makes perfect, a little more time spent on each model, and more care and attention to the details will prove to be all you really need.

We all started somewhere, no one was good when they first started painting. If anyone tells you they were then they are liers!
