ive taken a break from my bloodletters for a while to toy with some imperial guard. im going to run a infantry heavy IG army and i wanted almost every model to have some sort of backpack/rucksack. after searching online, and creeping around the forums i didnt find anything that would help me equip 150+ guard with backpacks, so i sucked it up and broke out the GS. here is my test model, let me know what you think.

also i have a pic of the test camo scheme and basing. i wanted to give them a swampy mud feeling, or at least thats what i was shooting for. also im not quite sure what color i should paint the canteen, pouches, etc, any suggestions?

That rucksack looks tops, but you are going to make them for 150+ guardsman? I admire your dedication, then!

But just think of the tightness of fielding that many models that you can say you sculpted equipment onto! That will earn you mad props.

If you haven't already thought about it, I would most definitely assembly line the process. Roll out 100 of your bedroll 'sausages', square off 100 of the packs, etc.

It will make them much more uniform and possibly help you not lose your mind!

I must say they look great, and I like the camo scheme too. Looking forward to seeing the first squad!

You could use milliput to make a mould of the backpack.
Just sculpt one from milliput & leave to dry.
Once dry put a peg in the back & coat the front with a release agaent - eg vaseline.
Push into a fresh batch of milliput & pull out the master.
Use the negative to push-mould you 100 pack.
Use DogofWar's suggestion for the bed rolls.
Use a small lump of GS to stick the backpack onto the minis & glue the bedrolls on (or if fresh just push on, wait for to dry & flood the area with watered-down PVA / white glue / Elmers to set in place).

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Yeah I agree, making a mould definitely sounds like a good idea...

Either way you do it, I want pictures of finished squads!

(And then you have to paint them)

I like both the backpack and the camo scheme, but what I like the most (and am most curious how you did) is the mud and mudsplatter on the guards foot.

All in all, an awesome job!

the mud was actually really simple. i took a glob of calthan brown, mixed in some baby powder (till it was a paste) then just brushed it on. i put some on the boots to give that trecking through the mud feel. i might even spatter some brown up the back of my guard to give that mud spatter look.
