I'd show you a pic to give you an example with some tips on how to do it, but my sister took the camera to visit family, and is too lazy (the fat narcissistic ones tend to do that) to get it out of her suitcase now that she's back. I'll see if I can get the pic tomorrow, but some people's lethargy knows no bounds.

But, thankfully, I can type.

So, to get the conventional look, there are many, many approaches.

I'll tell you the one I used most recently.

*Prime white.
*Mix some grey with a little(very little) black, water it down, and apply all over, washy style.
*Paint in the gold.
*Wash with black glaze
*Paint all the nice pretty details
*Wash one more time
*Do fun stuff with the NFW.

The few i painted for a friend of mine was quite simple really.

Primed Black then layered boltgun metal over all the silver areas of the mini, put on shining gold in the lettering and the other base colours, graveyard earth on seals and parchment, goblin green i think on the eyes.

Then i washed all the silver with badab black, and then rehighlighted with a very light dry brush of mithril silver. A ogryn flesh wash on the gold and rehighlight with a 50/50 mix of shining gold and mithril silver.

Then just highlighted everything else, as necessary, got some nice results.

That tutorial isn't really that good. They use 50 bucks worth of paint when you can get better results with much less. You could get similar results with 7 or 8 colours.

I got this guy with a broken NFW cheap on ebay and did a quick paint job to test my choice of colours. He's not highlighted and I'm not happy with the quality of some of it, but it gives an idea

Basecoated black, then gold up the fiddly bits, then boltgun most of the body. Reds are mechrite red with Scab (I think) red over the top, blues are mordian blue with asuremen wash, all the metals are washed with badab black to give a grimdark effect except for the NFW which has azurmen blue wash. Scrolls are dheneb stone with a mix of blazing orange and bleached bone over the top and washed with gyphone sepia. No drybrushing so far, but it might be suitable to get some light highlights.

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....

Here's one of mine (not the best picture, I'll see if I can't find a better one). " target="_new" rel="nofollow">
Here's my process;

Black base coat
Heavy dry brush with boltgun metal then apply black wash
dry brush with chainmail
paint the lettering, etc with burnished gold/highlight with silver/gold mix & wash with chestnut ink
lightly drybrush with silver and apply a watered down wash of blue (the new blue wash should work well for this)
Paint your capes, robes, and books

That's pretty much it! Hope that helps.

I used a custom mix of GW Blue Ink (discontinued) and Boltgun Metal as the basecoat, but after that, it was pretty basic stuff.

1. Basecoat 90/10 Boltgun Metal/Blue Ink.
2. Selective wash of Blue Ink. Don't just slop it on, put it into the crevices and anywhere that two armor plates meet.
3. Tidy up the ink with the basecoat color.
4. First highlight of 75/25 basecoat color/Mithril Silver.
5. Thin highlight of straight Mithril Silver.

The gold was simply Burnished Gold, Chestnut Ink wash, and then two highlights of Burnished Gold and 75/25 Burnished Gold/Mithril Silver.

More pics available at my blog, The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm.

I had a very similar method to Armyman there, but a little different. I didn't mix up any paints, just went with what I had:

1. Basecoat Boltgun Metal
2. Purity seals, stormbolter receiver, and book bindings got painted Scab Red
3. Added Shining Gold to the inscriptions, trim, and belt, as well as the sight for the stormbolter.
4. Highlighted with Mithril Silver
5. Purity seal ribbons and book pages were bleached bone, drybrushed with pure white.
6. Brown ammo packs
7. Black Wash

Old set of termies:

New set: head over to army profiles if you want to zoom in on these photos.

This is actually my second set of GK termies; I traded those for a whole new set so I could paint these. GK termies are my favorite model to paint. Every 40K player at my FLGS probably has atleast one squad of mine because I like to trade for unpainted models and most of them don't like to paint. ANYWAY...

I prime black, but only use Board to Pieces spray primer:

Link of primer comparisons: http://blackdiamondgames.blogspot.com/2008/08/primer-ii.html

Steps:
1. Prime black
2. Dry brush boltgun metal
3. little highlights of drybrushed chainmail
4. Foundation Khaki on everything that's going to be gold or purity seals
5. yellow on everything that's going to be gold
6. white on everything that's going to be gold or purity seals
7. gold on... you get it
8. ink or wash on gold and seals
9. highlights on eyes, shields, according to whatever you'd like them to be; four or five shades goes well.
10. Foundation Red on seals, four or five layers of highlights.
11. Matte varnish to protect your work.

Tips:
Invest in four or five tiny brushes for those highlights; don's skimp.

Cut XXXXXX pattern in the shoulders where you're going to glue the arms on or else they will break off ALOT!

DON'T glue anything until EVERYTHING is painted, otherwise your level of detail/ quality is crap in the armpits and other important areas.

Check out my army profile for more pics.

Don't skimp on the bases either, plan those out in a scheme that will accent your painting.

When I painted my GK I went for the blueish steel look by painting the armour boltgun metal over black primer then I inked them with azurmen blue ink. I would post pictures but I can't photgraph well.

I did my Terminators with black armor and then I did the lettering mythiril silver with a very watered down tin bitz over that. I did my regular PAGK as they appear on the box. Granted that is not a good description but hopefully will give you an Idea that you can run with. Plus all the others have given great tips. I found this as helpful as you probably are GKT9.

I use mine as 'counts-as' Honor Guard for my Chapter, and painted them Codex Grey with Black Greaves. I have a picture on my comp that I'll edit into this post when I get home.

And I know you highlighted in red probably to point out this same joke, but the poster and quoting my post in 40K Humor just felt so appropriate

I'm more a speed painter. I undercoated with army painter silver. AP are awesome as it goes on thin & serves as both an undercoat AND basecoat. The bad bit is there's not a lot of colours and it's expensive. But for GK's it's amazing!

Next used dark blue or black wash (vallejo has some good ones) on the silver, but keep it thin and avoid blotches. Thats gives the starting point for continuing with picking out the fiddly bits. After that I pretty much followed the book scheme. Check out Painting girl on youtube. She's got a video tute which is quite good including how to paint the writing bits.
