Even a used, badly painted starter army could run $100... is there a particular force you're looking to get? Marines or orks are usually a sure bet and you can get both in the Attack on Black Reach box set. Not enough marine models for a legit FoC, but enough to get you started and a legit (although not necessarily desireable) Ork force with boyz, nobz, a warboss, and deff koptas that you can convert to killa kanz...

For that matter, you can make the marine dred into a Deff Dred with a little knife work!

Now if you're not able to shell out $50 (or can't find someone to go halfsies with you - you get orks he gets marines or vice versa) I might be able to scrounge up some 2nd edition marines or ork goffs that I'd be willing to sell at a reasonable price. PM me what you're looking for and I'll see if I can help you out.

I'm curious now too as I have 17 2000+ point armies in my collection and about 3 armies in parts up to 1000 points and could use some fast cash.

No such thing as a cheap or free army,it all requires money at the end of the day.

Someone mentioned Black Reach and that's a good idea. Buy a Black Reach set cheaply off of Ebay and then trade either the Orks or Marines for more of the opposite type (leaving yourself with either double Orks or double Marines). New, cheap, unpainted, plus you get the mini rulebook, some dice, and templates.

I could sell you a 2500+ point high tabletop standard Black Legion army for around 250 USD + shipping...

in your search i suggest going to other hobby sites , like paintball etc. i posted wanting 40k on one of them, got 5k in space marines for 100 USD from someone that was done with the game. the other tip is to think 1000 points = roughly 100 dollars on sites like craiglist. i just got about 4k in eldar for 100 dollars. just make sure to be patient and use a good cheap website for comparison. in example i wanted eldar bikes people offering me a break here for 9 bucks a bike. found them on maelstrom uk for 7.70 with free shipping new.

I managed to find a very decent amount of Space Marines for about $100 on eBay a few years ago. It was painted and assembled rather um...not well...but there were three dreadnoughts, a whole crapload of Macragge Marines (and Marines assembled in boring poses), bikes, tanks, and even a land raider.

So yeah, you might check eBay.

Depending on your age and gaming group you could wait for someone to get out of the game and take their army. I got a fully assembled and painted tyranid army of about 10,000 points, a gaurd army of about 3,500, a traitor army of about 1000, a 2,000 chaos army, and there are some lizardmen in the mail. And if i didnt still regularly talk to these people i would pass one off. I just watch closely for people who are leaving the hobby after a long time, then take their old models and restore them. Usualy telling people you plan to restore their army to full fighting glory makes the separations less.. traumatic.

A small dip into the 40k universe landed me with way more than i ever needed.
