Just getting into Warmachine and Hordes. Got a box of stuff in the mail. This P&M Log is my way to kick my but in gear and make sure these guys don't go the way of the Tyrandis... Bretonnians... British FOW... 'Nid BFG Fleet... Mighty Empires set... Planetary Empires set... THIS ONE I'll finish.
So first post. first P&M log, first Warmachine and Hordes stuff... kinda scared/excited. Feedback, encouragement and motivation (polite or otherwise) all welcome and keep it coming.
So I got a box of stuff last week when the Canadian dollar was doing good and it arrived today. Picked it up, sliced it open and tada!
(Woot! Images work!)
So I decided to start with the Trollbloods starter box and build them up. This was all done tonight and I was amazed at how easy it was to build a playable force. The models were all impressive, and had virtually no mold lines or flash so I was kinda taken aback (although pleasantly) and I'm looking forward to taking them out later this week to get stomped on.
First up was Impaler #1
Straight forward and easy, went together easily, pinned his one arm outta fear but I didn't for the 2nd guy and he's doing well. Over all the parts fit together really nice and the model is pretty awesome. Also, I love Dakka autocorrect, I didn't colour balance them and Dakka was all like, "hey, look at this" and so now these pics look like I know what I'm doing with the camera my mom got me for Christmas. (Thanks Mom *Thumbs up*)
Chief Madrak Ironhide
He's not actually the guy I wanna end up using, but he was in the box so here he is. Pinned his axe and I didn't line it up perfectly but it mostly works, may need to bulk up the gauntlet so that it looks more natural (can't see in the photo)
Troll Axer
This guy probably was the most problematic of the box set.
So his feet were larger then the inset of the base and therefore he would float 3" off the ground. Didn't want to build base up to him, so filed down the edges so that his toes hang over that inner circle. Also tried punching holes for his peg feet and in the end just widen the slot at each end and used that.
His right arm is connected to the torso, his left arm is separate and his hands are on his axe. This was a little annoying to line up and I didn't even try to pin it as I'd decided at this point that so far everything was sticking together pretty well. In the end I got it all together and wrist meet up with wrists so I'm happy.
Impaler #2
Easy peasy. No pinning, slight tilt on head, slightly different angle to spear, flipped quiver. All done.
So 1 night, not much really hard work and now I got the problem of no black primer handy so tomorrow will probably be either Grim Angus and Whelps or Cryx.
Opps, Almost forgot the staple "group shot"
Closing notes.
Paint schemes:
-I'm really torn on this as I've been playing around with lava painting with my mighty/planetary empires tiles and I'm tempted to try Lava trolls. Black bases with deep red mid tones and up to a brighter red for highlights. Then any spiky bits (dires) would start red and go through orange to yellow/white. Could make for a neat look. If I do that I'm not sure what I'd use for metals and clothing and such... and I'm not that great a painter so on the large skin areas it may just come out too stark contrasts (no experience with blending or even much with layers). Ideas/Advice?
-Cryx I was toying with the lava idea but decided no, if I do it, it'll be on the trolls. The Cryx I'm thinking a deep blue ( GW midnight blue is one of my favourite colours) with red instead of green in the glowing bits. This would be fun to try my hand at source lighting, Again I'm not sure what I'd do for the metals. The Cryx force is gunna be 'Jack heavy and I'm avoiding the plaguey looking troops. (Gorgers, Raiders and stuff like that look good though)
Bases.
-Cryx will either be lava or putrid water (like glowing green ooze flowing on black ground) and the trolls will probably be lava rock (basalt?) done with modelling sand done in deep red and wet brushed black.
-If anyone has a good product for putting bases and where to get it, Please SHARE!!!
Log. I'll snap photos as I work, not gunna take a whole lot of time out of doing the minis to photo it, but if you want more photos, or I'm doing too many, or wanna see something in detail, just ask. The worst I can do is tell you to go yourself.

Nice start on the Trolls!
I have similar experiences as you with the PP's quality of the sculpts, there is very little to no flash on the minis in general.
When painting the large skin areas I start with the shadow color which includes the a bit of the base color to ease the blending of layers. From there I just add the thinned layers to muscles and other raised areas with more of the base color added to shadow color. I often go with 3 mixes to next color, so color1 to color2 ratios 2:1 => 1:1 => 1:2 => 0:1. I bit of practice and the results are fine.
Looking forward in seeing these guys painted.

Firstly welcome to Dakka!
Even though this is in the really early stages I can't wait to see how this develops. As for painting ideas/techniques check out brush thralls:
http://blog.brushthralls.com/
They have a pretty good tutorial on how to paint a pyre troll. I am not sure if it is the exact scheme you are looking for but perhaps it could give you ideas, the tutorial is called,"Playing with fire." Hope it helps a bit and keep up the good work!

Fun day today. Braved downtown rush hour to get black primer, came back, sprayed trolls, quiver falls off impaler...
Then put together 1 deathripper, and then found out I ran out of glue... so back out there, get some glue (2 bottles, won't run out now)
More of the same. Cryx put together here.
Deathripper #1
Toe is kinda bent up, I'll fix that later.
Bone 'Jacks
I didn't bother showing as many photos this time, so here's the 2 deathrippers and the defiler.
They were kinda more annoying to build 'cause I had to bend the legs to get the vertical axis of the torso to be vertical.
And there was a little bit more flash than the trolls.
Deneghra
Don't really like the pose with her looking at the spear, but now I'm not sure how much I like this.
Slayer
One of the models that really made me wanna get Cryx (this and the Cankerworm)
Was going to put both arms up for a "combo strike" pose but the shoulders and fist looked kinda goofy in hand held trials.
So he's about to smack something down instead.
And group shot
Not bad, I can run through a game with both now!
(Here's my primed trolls) -pic taken in the dark with the flash
So tomorrow will probably be filling in a couple gaps (especially in the Slayer's shoulder spikes) and then going to play my first game (woot!) and unfortunately I won't be doing any work this weekend as I'm visiting an old school buddy outta town.
Ha ha ha, just noticed the planetary empire tiles in the back. They'll get done when I get stuck/have to wait for stuff with the new guys.

So for some more interesting stuff.
Didn't get out to play, weather did not agree. And only did a little bit of painting, experimenting with layering stuff (never really done it before) Turned out alright except for the last colour I did. I think I needed one more step in there. So I tried washing the really harsh edges with the last colour washified. The back turned out pretty good and I'm happy with that, so the belly might've been just to thick a layer. Next I'll do the hair up as flamey colours then work on the metal. I'm not sure what I want to do with the metal though: maybe black with only a little bit of metal highlights to look like blackened iron, maybe copper to have a brighter red... ideas anyone?
You can really see how bad it is on his leg. His chest looks a lot better and his belly is in between. Oh, and his quiver fell off when I went to start... And I knocked off the other guys spear when I sent to grab something... So that is fun. And the primer didn't stick to well (probably 'cause I did it at night, outside, left it out there and it rained. Totally optimal conditions)
his back turned out pretty good (though the picture didn't) I gotta say I think I can do this layering thing! I look forward to more trollish fun.
ps. Anyone have tips for how to fix those legs, maybe a black ink or wash? or will I be stuck with blotchy legs or repainting?

The legs are a bit hard to make out on the pics, but a wash of the shadow color might do the trick. Just apply it sparingly and don't let it pool, just a thin layer allover.
You could try to paint the metals by basing them on boltgun and then washing with devlan mud and another wash from the citadel set. That creates a nice dark metal with tin of the other color. My basic recipe for dark iron is devlan and ogre flesh wash over bolt gun. Just some highlights needed to make it shine. You can see example of it here in my squire's boiler.

So nice weekend, long drives, all done and good. Tonight was a little painting, did the hair in the middle of playing with the big leather areas. I was looking to have a more off white finish, but started too dark I guess. The highlights are too harsh too... I guess that's why it's still learning. Pics
So I read the tutorial for photos and they came out a little better. Dunno what else to write. I like the hair, not sure about the gray area. Soften the blotchy bits on the legs with a black ink, worked well to redeem 'em. I think the next time instead of starting gray, I'll start brown, go bone, than white. Tomorrow... hmmm... maybe some more cloth or maybe the barrel.

Well, that's a longer break than I wanted. Still learning how to take photos, so if someone can explain how to fix white balance post photo that would help alot (due to lighting and long exposure I get a yellowish tinge, don't know how to fix and auto fix is doing alright but not great)
As for what progress got made this time: Fix the highlighting of the large gray areas and painted some other areas that are gunna be gray including hand wraps and some cloth below the bracers. The straps are gunna be leathery coloured and that'll probably be the next bit. Anyway, below are PICS!
BEFORE
BEFORE
AFTER
AFTER
Angle changed but I think you get the idea that the highlights are a lot subtler and white as opposed to an off white.
I like it a lot better and I guess I gotta remember that less is more, especially for the final highlight. (I did the last colour to heavy for the red, then for the grey, so I hope I've learned now!)
I like how his turned out, but the photo over emphasizes the highlights. Anyway, there is a lot of smooth texture in the wraps and I like how it looks.
The neck highlights are better and you can see the hand bindings and the feet bindings.
Coolest shot but doesn't show much of todays work. The underside of the left arm, the left hand wraps, the redo of the back highlights and the skirt (?)
So, like I said, leather straps tomorrow (after Glow in the dark minigolf!) and then maybe I'll do something about the nails (toe and finger) I started doing a grey to black (I was thinking ash) starting gray at cuticle but I don't know. Opinions? we got black, red (dark or light), orange, something radical like blue? I guess ours are just a little lighter and shinier than skin tone... so would a red with an ink work?
Also, HURRAY for plastic heavies in warmachine!!!!!! I love helljacks and I'll probably get a reaper now and maybe magnet up so it can be a 2nd slayer. (or corrupter depending on rules)
um... so I'm still hoping that people are reading this and can give advice/direction, but even if no one is, at least now I have something that will keep reminding me to GET STUFF DONE! (This weekend is a painting weekend.)
Also, I am really starting to hate the crappy job I did of priming and the amount of metal showing just from me handling it when painting it. gunna really havta seal it... and not screw that pu and ruin all my hard work!

Good to see that you made some progress with the impaler.
One thing that might help with the white balance is to change the background to some slightly darker color than white. Your camera is now confused as the light reflecting back from the white back ground is really bright and the fig is dark and it cannot find good balance. This is why I take pics with light grey back ground.
You could do the nails as a variation on the skin color to keep the troll in warm colors and the clothes and other equipment cool colors. It would create nice contrast. Skin color highlighted with bone or some other warm off white?
Just keep the pics coming, some of us are following you. I haven't had any comments to my skorne plog after the last 3(?) posts but the some people check it. It just takes time and energy to give feedback and I for one just don't like to add posts without giving some meaningfull or opinionated comments.

Leather work. Turned out alright. Really liked the bracers and chest straps. The bags were good except that I, again, put the layers on too heavy so I had to wash (ink in this case) to recover the bags from garish highlighting.
Enjoy. Looking forward to a lot of painting tomorrow. I'm getting pissed off at that primer 'cause I've been putting black on those shiny spots everytime I have it out and, well, you can see how that is going for me. Anyway, next will be the stitching on the kilt, maybe leather on spear and the spear head metal as a test for what I want for the rest of the metal.
Also looking for profile pic... hmm....

The leather parts look good. Some pros use the highlight and then wash to get nice results so it is not unheard of.
You could try to attach the fig to a empty can or something to avoid touching the fig while you are painting it. This would preserve the base coat. I have an empty pill bottle for the 40mm based figs and the small bases fit on top on used citadel paint bottles.

I've seen some pro painters do something similar with poster tack and
whatever cylindrical object would fit under a model. I suppose I should
switch to that some day, but I need to have a bunch of them to facilitate
assembly line painting.

Thanks for comments, I am seeing a HUGE improvement in my painting and photos 'cause of 'em and thanks again!
Today I didn't do a lot of painting but still more than a weeknight. The impaler is pretty much done minus letting the glue on the base dry and then dry brushing it with black. For the metal I decided to keep it simple stupid and just metal with ink. Maybe later I'll get ambitious and try learning NMM. but for now, it works.
so 2 batches of photos, first was during the day so I had to try and play with settings and they ended up too red after Dakka auto correct. (Didn't process them as they were just a little overexposed and I thought that Dakka would take care of it.) The second batch was later at night and they are fine.
[Hey, the first ones don't have the quiver, just noticed that too]
Without further ado

Leather you saw before (snakebite + chestnut ink, shakebite again), barrel is just a dark brown with chestnut ink, wood on spears is a dark brown with chestnut ink. (Love that chestnut ink, sad if they don't make it anymore, hafta learn the equivalent wash I guess. Went with black + red with bone feathering for the fingernails. Still kinda just looks like the metals showing though. :(

Dead sexy! The base needs a dry brush (heavy) of black to make it look more like volcano rock but besides that! The front arc is marked between red and redder.
Besides that, once the base is done, some more sealer (it's already got a coat) and than 1/4 trolls done.
Next will be... Dunno, axer, chief or other impaler? votes?
Also, civ 4 is the bane of my painting.
Holy crap, I just made the connection between Malfred the guy giving pointers and comments with the whole pokeminis PLOG that I've been following like 3 times a day (well, there's not much to do at work, that's why its like 3xa day).

Looks good. The metal areas are fine, except I would fix the pooled ink from the spear tip, it is visible in the pics taken from the right.
I don't see the need to try NMM, you can have similar or better results with the metallic paints by using inks and thinned paint washes to control the brightness of metal. This way you get much nicer finish IMO.
Paint the axer next, it is one of the best sculpts of the Troll line, I have pondered on getting it just for painting as I have no time to paint another faction of Hordes to army level, but the fig is so nice I really want to paint it.

Yo, so Sunday I went to FLGS to get a first game/demo in Hordes and Warmachine, and I showed up a little early to look around. However I forgot to change my clock so I had a lot more time than I thought and someone wanted a game of Warhammer so my bloody peasants went stomping on some elves before I got to play my first games of Hordes and Warmachine. I love my peasants. Anyway, for the Hordes and Warmachine, I got to play against the Khador starter box. The trolls did good and got a lucky crit slam with an impaler into the warcaster and follow up with axe and spear left Scorcha on the edge to be finished off. So the trolls are pretty straight forward and I lood forward to getting some more games in with them. The cryx is a little harder to handle and the Khador player remember some more and I got trounced in the second game. Denegra's a little more tricky and I really didn't understand how tough Khador is and how fragile Cryx are. Also Scorcha's feat is nasty. That's that for now. Progress in painting has been made today!
The axer is awesome so I went with the suggestion and he is next. Got flesh done, hair, and the base colours of the axe. The axe to be washed a few times to cover up the boundary between layers. I decided to try a red blade, don't really know why, but its along the same colouring as the skin. don't know if I 'll keep it. what do you think?
Pics

So final points for this...
I would like feedback on:
- the axe (keep it, lose it, try this...)
-Cloth colours. The impaler was really hueless with just greys and browns. I was thinking maybe a olive green this time but that would seem weird with the base and skin I think, I'm really partial to dark blues with dark reds, but that might be too much colour compared the impaler... I don't wanna do black as I have NO CLUE on shading/highlighting it...
-Armour. There is a lot more than on the impaler, any ideas or improvements for it this time.
This went a lot faster and smoother than the impaler and I didn't have to try and recover my painting. woot for improving! thanks for the help!
ps. Prince of Persia is distracting, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is awesome and don't forget to spay and neuter your pets.
pps.Oh yeah, taking time off and visiting back home this weekend, so not much will get done, and I'm hoping to get a game or 2 in tomorrow...

The red blade in the axe looks ok, it gives nice effect together with the skin. It's not something I would do, as I like my figs to be more on the grim dark side of things.
I would also keep the cloth similar to the impaler. It would help to make the trolls to look coherent and part of the same group on the table. The are so diverse looking force when all of the line is considered I would keep the cloth color similar to hold em together.
For the armor you could try to paint some of the plates with copper or brass color. This can be done with washes (brown/ flesh instead of black) or with brass base coat and then same washes as with regular steel armor. That way you would get some more variation to the metals.

So a week of nothing. Played a game last Thursday and got another lucky win against a Skorne starter box. The caster (freddy kreuger) came out to try and get Madrak down but couldn't quite do it. Then the only beast I had left (a impaler) came stomping in and got really lucky. Needing 12 to hit and a 16 or more to kill and managing both to 1 shot him before he danced away.
So I got a lot done today on the axer. the only thing left is playing with the metal, highlighting the spots on the shoulder, the top and bottom of axe and painting the little whelp in the bag.

(I took the drip off while taking the pictures)
I was having a bad time with my hand and shaking a little and it was annoying but it wasn't too bad. Some parts I wish I did better. (especially the leather bits) but all in all not bad.
So for the metal I plan on going over it with a light metal for the large flat areas (like the back) to smooth the colour, and to highlight the edges and the rivits. The axe I think I'll highlight the edge of the blade than wash again. The gold I think needs to be darker and maybe a bit reddish. (Anyone have a suggestion for that part?)
So what to do for the whelp? I was thinking a red - orange skinned whelp.
So as you can see I agreed about the cloth and I tried the different washes for the metal on the bracers and axe.
I had screwed up the axe trying to do a red metal wash that came out barbie pink, so I had to start over with it.
Ahhh, I'm no longer a 'bloody peasant'

Quick little update. Put some colour on top and bottom of axe, did a little more to the metal. Still need whelp and base.

And I just saw that I got metal all over his one hand... oh well.

He is starting to look nice, the metals need still some tidying around the waist.
The ax could also use some kind of lining on the border between the gold and blade. The different parts are at the moment too close to each other.
Hope to see him finished soon.

What do you do for the 'albino' guys/any ideas what to do for the 'locks that are supposed to be albino?

I haven't painted any yet.
My first thought was to go with olive skin...
But I'm not sure.

More impaler goodness. hair and 1/2 leather (plus chickens!)
That's right, chickens! I realized the "sacks" tied on its waist are actually plucked and cleaned CHICKENS!!!! wow, I feel like a fool. Oh well, the other impaler wrapped his chickens in leather (he's into that kinda stuff) while this dude doesn't mind a little dirt and blood getting on his snack food and prefers it ready to gobble up (down?) whenever he's peckish!
Fire hair, standard at this point. leather - based, inked, bring back almost to base. (chickens were started the same but flesh tone and flesh ink after leather base and ink)
wood base darker brown + chestnut ink.
Spear has green tassles (base coat only) and will be there to show previous kriel/break up colour scheme so I can tell the 2 impalers apart.

You totally see chickens in that last one.
Crap, I totally forgot to give him eyes on his eyeballs ... fixed now.
Next - highlight leather, detail barrel, (oh look, forgot his stubble!), start metals.
Input desired - metals, what to do (besides standard metal + black ink) I kinda liked the ogryn flesh wash on the axers bracers but only after I inked it, still don't know for sure though. Also was pondering stone spear heads?
-Who next? There are whelps and madrak primed. As I don't know what to do for albino still, I'm leaning whelps (plus the awesome cuteness of whelps lol) and there's grim angus un-primed too. I might be getting a blitzer and/or a mauler this weekend too. This would be about the limit of my trollbloods for awhile (though I want to get a bunch more stuff, there are still Cryx waiting, MkII is coming and there may be Nomads from Infinity in the new year *raise eyebrow here)

The trolls have nice details on them don't they The fig looks good, I would go with similar metal style as with the previous two to avoid too much variation. It could break the cohesion of the army's paint job.
The whelps and Grim are nice models, I'm not a fan of pMadrak fig. By painting one of the warlocks you would have a fully painted battlegroup on the table.
