In closing, I thought it might be fun to take some pictures of all the 30k World Eaters I have assembled so far. I was a bit disquieted, however, by the fact that something that I keep insisting won't turn into an army has begun to look suspiciously like...an army:

Happens to the best of us

The idea for the base of Angron is really good, can't wait to see him complete.

Thanks a lot, guys!

@: Zywus: The head on the plasma gunner is from an older FW Raven Guard conversion kit (I think. At least the head used to have a RG legion badge over one ear...), and the Triarius' head is a Skullcrusher helmet with the bunny ears cut off and a horsehair crest from a Betrayal at Calth plastic Mk IV sergeant added on top.

As for the chain cloak, yeah, it's from the WFB Manticore Lord, and it does occasionally pop ip on the bitz sites, although I wasn lucky enough to get mine in a direct trade.

Yesterday I met with my good friend Annie for a little hobby session: Annie worked on painting here crazy awesome, pirate-based Blood Bowl team. I would be remiss not to share a snapshot of it:

Meanwhile, I worked on several smaller projects starting with another go at Angron's base:

I started where I left off last time:

I plugged all the holes in the base using Miliput, and added some structure by pressing some cork into the putty after it had begun to dry, stamping a rocky texture onto the surface:

Next up is a lot of cleanup work, some cork, sand and slate, and some skulls.

I also mostly finisheda base I've wanted to build for ages:

Creating that Space Marine with the open ribcage felt strangely cathartic, for some weird reason that probably doesn't say anthing good about me...

And here's the future owner of the base, my plastic Giant Flesh Hound:

As always, let me know what you think!

Just a note with the milliput- if you want it to look really realistic like stone, I'd suggest taking an X-acto after it's dried, and shaving a couple flat spots into it. When stone cracks, it tends to shear in places, as well as having the rough bits.

If it's meant to be concrete, though, that should be a fine texture.

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ Anvildude: Good point about the stone texture! Given the Imperium of Man's scale and utter disregard for its individual subjects, I suspect many of its monuments would be mass-produced poured concrete creations, following successful templates. Which is why it might just be okay to keep the texture as is, I suspect...?

@ evildrcheese: Hmm, let me see: The flesh hound is basically a Dragon Ogre lower body combined with the neck portion of a plastic Daemon Prince, the head from a plastic Bloodthirster and a vestigial pair of Vargheist wings -- yup, that about covers it

So, with degrees well over 30 degrees Celsius outside, the last few days didn't exactly lend themselves to outstanding acts of craftsmanship. I've still managed to mostly finish the extra detail on Angron's base. Take a look:

The first step was to cover the empty parts of the base in my usual mix of cork, slate and sand and seal it all with PVA glue and plastic glue. The effect was also used to blend the seams between the different areas and materials together.

I also added some skulls to the front of the base, both to make the area look more interesting and also because, well, Khorne! (DUH!)

Two spiky poles were used to add even more of a chaos feel to the base -- I am planning to add a beaten up (yet still upright) Ultramaerines vexilla to the other side of the base (the bigger part), so there will be an underlying theme of chaos creeping across the base towards the Imperium's defenders.

And I've also built the lower half of the poor Ultramarines officer clutched by Angron:

Some gap filling ist still needed, but I am pretty happy with the pose, and if you look closely, you can even make out a piece of spine emerging from the lower back...

I'll also be using some Liquid GS to add a bit of texture to the flat stony areas. But I am already pretty happy with the overall look of the base:

I have also been working on another model that I am really happy with right now: A 30k World Eaters Chaplain:

The stock Kurtha Sedd model didn't do much for me, so I used the legs for my Sergeant Bardolf conversion, swapped in some new legs, took quite a bit of inspiration from Poom's chaplain and added a touch or two of my own. I really liked Fabricator General's take on the World Eaters' chaplains serving as "Chain Dogs", the grim overseers of the fighting pits, and I tried to make my chaplain reflect that concept.

As always, let me know what you think!

Very nice bases both for angron and your flesh hound mate, great job. Would it be possible to know what bit is the Ultra's ribcage on that second base made from?
And that Chaplain looks both inspiring and utterly terrifying at the same time!!

Cheers, mate! Don't forget that I've been at it a bit longer than that, however, and I'd say the big improvements only started happening from year three onwards

Hmm, it was a bit that just appeared in my bitzbox, but I do think it's a piece from one of the plastic undead wolves from the Vampire Counts, and it's normally used on - you guessed it - the hounds' rib cage

Cheers, guys!

So today it's finally time for a rather sizeable update about Angron's base -- and also about adding the model to the base, but we'll be getting there in a minute

Since we last saw the base, I made a couple of important steps: The left size of the whole, the part Angron will actually be standing on, was completed:

The green you see scattered all over the base is a thin coat of Liquid GS, applied according to a suggestion by fellow hobbyist Augustus b'Raass, in order to give the stone a more interesting and believable texture.

Then the base was undercoated black:

As for the right side of the aquila, I gave it the same detailing treatment, adding stuff and finally settling on two additional Ultramarines. Here's the finished ensemble:

The fallen Marine in the middle of the base came from Forgeworld's Angron model, which I think is a cool little shout out. The guy on the right is acting in true XIII Legion fashion, taking cover and shooting at the charging Daemon-Primarch in a desperate, yet disciplined, last stand:

"Theoretical: There's a massive, angry red Daemon...thing charging right at me. Practical: Best shoot the hell out of it!"

Tell you what, I almost find myself rooting for the little guy

With all of the conversion work and extra texture on Angron's display based finished, I headed outside to add black undercoat to the right side of the base as well. And then both parts were sprayed with Army Painter Uniform Grey (a bit more carefully this time around):

Now at first glance it might seem as though we were back to square one (the unpainted plastic), but upon closer examination, the grey works really well with the Liquid GS-based texture to create a slightly sandy, stony look on the aquila parts. There's also a slight shading effect on the areas that aren't part of the shattered aquila, as a consequence of focusing the grey spray on the actual stone.

I decided to focus on Angron's actual base first, because I really needed a milestone achievement somewhere in there, so here's the finished left part of the aquila base:

Regarding the blood, I was ridiculously careful not to overdo it, aiming for as much blood as necessary and as little as I could get away with The blood was created using Tamiya Clear Red (although BftBG works exactly the same, as far as I know), and I did start by mixing in a tiny blood of black paint for the first coat of blood, then adding pure Clear Red on top. I think the combination gives the bloody areas a bigger amount of depth and texture.

So with the base out of the way as well, all that remained was to add the angry red daemon beast on top, so that's what I did

Actually getting the model to stick to the base was, once again, an exercise in frustration. But as you can see, things worked out in the end

Here's a closer look at the base:

Two more "special effects" were added to the base: One is an additional spot of blood directly below the Ultramarine's torso (for obvious reasons). The other effect is something I had never tried before, and I am rather happy with the outcome: I wanted the stone in the direct vincinity of Angron's right foot (and the flames below it) to look as though it was heating up due to the Primarch's daemonic presence. The effect was achieved by carefully building up several layers of Bloodletter glaze:

And with the model and base now combined, our brave little smurf finally gets reunited with his lower half. Well, sort of...

I know I am probably boring you to tears by saying this, but I am still so incredibly happy with Angron's head and face...

To wind things up (for now, that is), here's a comparison shot showing Angron next to my "regular" Bloodthirster model:

Both models' skin colour actually differ far more in real life than is obvious from looking at the picture. However, I do think I've done a pretty good job of surpassing the base on the Bloodthirster and of making both models look pretty different, in spite of being built from the same stock model.

And here's a hint of things to come (not this weekend, though, so please don't ask )

Phew, this has been quite a ride, indeed! As always, let me know what you think! And if you like my version of daemon-Primarch Angron, feel free to give the pictures some votes in the Gallery section!

I think you'll want to add a little more blood to the base- consider that Angron is moving, and even on top of that, he's probably swinging the top half of the Ultramarine, pulling him from the lower torso- there's going to be at least a little blood spatter trail going from the legs to the spot- and the spot, I'm not sure, should be a spot at all, but maybe just a little bit heavier blood spatter. Possibly even have a little spatter further on, in the path that the torso is probably swinging.

That should help add to the sense of movement on the base.

First of all, thank you all so much for the very enthusiastic feedback! I will admit that this does feel like one of my best models, if not the best one, which makes it all the more awesome that you guys seem to like it so much!

@ Anvildude: Cheers, mate! Everything you're saying about the base makes sense, and yet I doubt I'll be adding any more blood, mostly because it's such an easy effect to overdo, and I feel the base is already one drop of blood away from being OTT

@ JustaerinAtTheWall: You might want to take a closer look at the bigger base in one of the last pictures, mate Besides, I've carefully considered how many Marines to add to both parts of the base, and three all in all seemes like a good balance.

In other news, here's a little something I made just now, using Photoshop and Pixlr:

And here's that piece of artwork showing Angron by Alex Boyd that served as ine of my most important pieces of reference, once again:

While my Angron is far from a perfect match, I do believe he looks like a plausible interpretation of the same character, wouldn't you agree?

Again, thanks for all the kind words!
