This is my first 40k army, but I have a fantasy orcs army. The basic idea was to make a space marines army with orange armor and a sun as their symbol. Any painting tips would be appreciated. Currently I've been trying out the space wolves rules because I think they fit the feel I want to give the army better.

So far I have painted:
-1 Captain
-1 Librarian
-1 Dreadnought
-1 Venerable Dreadnought
-5 Terminators
-5 Assault Terminators
-20 Marines
-5 Scouts with Sniper Rifles
-2 Rhinos
-1 Drop Pod
[Thumb - DSC05398.JPG]
This is the whole army, but I forgot to put the drop pod in. I'll post it later.

This is my venerable dreadnought that I;ve been using as Bjorn from the Space Wolves book.

I use the emperor's champion as my captain

and the dark angels chief librarian as my librarian.

more marines

[Thumb - DSC05360.JPG]
rhinos

[Thumb - DSC05359.JPG]
scouts

This is the best I've been able to manage with putting a sun on their shoulder pads, and it looks more like a flower. If anyone knows a better way to do this than freehand, I would greatly appreciate it.

Love that venerable dread, what kit(s) did you use for the arms?

Keep practicing on the freehand, you'll get it. I find it helps if you break the object you want to paint down into geometric figures, then fill in what is needed.

Looks good, might want to get better coverage with your orange though.

Bjorn looks sick.

how'd ya make the ven dread? tutorial maby?

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I Die, You are forgiven. If I Live, I will kill you." Such is the Rule of Honor.

I used two dreadnoughts from the black reach box, an impreial guard tank accessory sprue, two lascannons from the impreial guard heavy weapons, hands from an old metal wraithlord, and extra bitz from the inquisitor range I had lying around.

First, I cut apart both arms from one of the dreadnoughts to make a right handed close combat weapon. Then I cut the fingers off both hands and replaced them with the wraithlord hands. Then I put tread covers from the tank sprue onto each arm. I cut the blade off of the sword from the inquisitor range battle brother Artemis and glued it on the bottom of the left tread cover. Then, I pinned the lascannons to the other arm. I want to make a assault canon for it too. Then, I carved out the round things to attach the arms to the body so they can hang lower. i couldn't find a good way to do this so it looks a little ragged on the inside. I used the tank wheels as the joints between the arms and body. Then, I cut off the entire right leg so I could reposition it. I made the new feet from the toes of the old feet and tank wheels. The hardest part of the conversion was to position the rocks, body, and leg sections together so they looked good. I recomend getting a second person to help on this. The bottom leg covering is plasticard, and the shoulder pads are from the inquisitor range Witch Hunter Tyrus.

Aside from planning, the model did not take that long to convert. Nothing was too difficult except lining the feet up and making the right arm. I plan on adding to the model in the future, maybe a banner over its head, but I Wanted to get it made and painted so I could play with it.

The -only- thing I don't like is that there isn't much colour contrast on the standard Bhattel Bhruthars. I think adding some of that bleached bone to the shoulderpads or helmets of the Marines would do wonders to help draw the eye better

I absolutely love the color scheme. Its very simple, yet very "meant for battle". If that makes any sense.

Also, the bases matching exactly with your tabletop makes for a stunning look.

Great to see a custom painted army.

Don't be afraid to use colours close to the orange spectrum such as yellows, reds and even a little purple\green. Little touches of these colours can make them stand out a little more. With the termies and dread a dif colour though the army as a whole looks great... So just ignore me. Ha!

Thank you. This is a concern. I was considering bleached bone shoulder pads, but I didn't want them to look too much like blood ravens. I'm hoping the white decals on the shoulder pads help. I may try to mix it up a bit with the next batch of marines because they will work as bloodclaws.

Thank you. maybe I'll put some red armor pieces on my assault marines. I think I'll use purple when I paint my chaplain and his unit to go with the black armor. I love using green and orange together, but I'm not sure where to use it because I'm trying to keep a warmer color pallet.

This is a good looking army so far. The orange gives them a unique look and the Venerable Dreadnaught is pretty sweet.

Keep up the good work

Actually, and Ice Blue color for the shoulder pads would contrast and really make them pop. Orange and light blue seem to work well. It shouldn't, but it does.

One of my friend uses Orange as his primary color. It is a lot brighter than what I see in your pictures. For painting I'd prime white and use a brown wash rather than try to bring black up to orange.

I think blue would be the best contrast color, but you are obviously going in a different direction.

Good luck, have fun and I look forward to seeing more in the future.

Can you tell me the colors you used to get this? Espieclially with the scouts? This is the style I been trying to get with my marines.
