Well? Pipe up if you do.

I think this game is the unsung gem of Wizards' efforts over the past few years. It takes all of the depth-made-simple of 3.5 style d20 (including Modern's lovely skill trees) and experiments with the streamlining (in terms of skills, for example) that went a bit too far in Fourth Edition. Although I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan, I kind of wish they had gone more mainline fantasy with this ruleset rather than using it as a testing ground for Fourth under the Star Wars franchise. SWRPG seems to polarize people or at least draw out the SW hate. (I have to admit, since the Yuzhan Vong business, I've been somewhat disgruntled and confused with the SW universe--and even moreso with Legacy. Just not my Star Wars, I guess.)

Also, I've been thinking of running a play-by-post here on Dakka in the new year and want to see if anyone who has the books is interested.

I've got all of the previous stuff.. revised edition was it ?.... that I use. Sure had its flaws, like any system, but we have fun with it still.

Looked at the saga edition stuff, but... hmm... like most of the 4th edition stuff I've seen it looks and seems a bit too.. gamey for my tastes.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

It's not really 4E, more 3.8 or so (if Pathfinder is 3.6). In fact, as I said, I think WotC would have done better to turn D&D into something like Saga Ed. If you mean "invoves miniatures" by "gamey" then I agree. Without some kind of visual objectivity, I find the DM has too much control over what is possible for the PCs. That is probably one of the most significant improvements between AD&D2nd and Third--the rules read like a player's bill of rights. As a long-time DM, I really appreciated this because it took a lot of the burden of introducing Deux Ex Machina and other plot contrivances off of me. It does increase crunchy arguments (the modern "rules lawyering") but so much of the speculative phsyics ("well, I should be able to move this much because of the incline of the floor," etc) has gone. And I certainly appreciate it as a PC who detests DM fiat. Newer systems--including the much maligned 4E--really do allow for a significantly higher threshold of PC involvement with storytelling. These rules also don't cater only to people with very vivid imaginations, like the old AD&D. Some argue that's a bad thing but I think (given how hard it is to get a reliable group together) opening up the player base is a good thing.

Legitimate Thread Necro:

Saga has been canned. Pity that. Any one have thoughts on why? Is the Star Wars franchise in trouble generally or do you think this is limited to SWPRGing? I cannot imagine that the game would be cancelled due to bad rules or not being fun as it seems awesome to me. And a new source book just came out a month or two ago, right?

The SWRPG was a major stumbign block as it changed system from a very cherished version (The West Enfd Games d6 editions) that was, overall, very 'rules light' and moved it to d20, which tends to be somwhat crunchy (although the Saga edition and 4.0 D&D are pretty smooth in actual play).

I ran Revised for a while and it had some serious faults. The biggest was that Jedi essentially had to 'wound' themselves to activate Jedi abilities. It made ability use very iffy except at high levels.

I understand the Saga edition revised this by essentially making them the equivalent of 4.0 Encounter powers and adding an option to use Force Poitns to recover hem, or take Dark Side Point to get a bunch back. This sounds pretty cool and matches the canon quite well.

As to why it was canceled, one theory I've heard was that it was just a natural end. WotC had published tons of books over the years they had the license, and didn't have more to do easily. it was either cancel or have support be very slow as new materials would be very irregular.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.
