Hello there. I am in the next few weeks going to begin building an imperial guard army. Going to use Cadian bodies with some custom made shoulder armor and elysian drop troops respirator helms for the heads. Just telling you all this so you can get an idea of the style I wanted them to look whilst I was planning them. Going to make converted longlas rifles as sniper rifles in infantry squads. Anyway I have a preliminary list drawn up with this in mind and would appreciate constructive feedback on how I might tweak the list if needed.

HQ

1 x Company Commander - Power weapon, bolt pistol, Carapace armor, refractor field

The Lord Commisar is a poor choice, a standard CCS with the same gear has about the same price and gets much more done.

arming your infantry squads exclusively with SRs, is also a recipe for disaster.

Ogryn are all sorts of bad, and six of them do not in any way resemble SM Terminators or a Land Raider, even though that's the points you are throwing at them.

Summary:
Re-think your HQ
Re-equip line squads with a more normal weapon setup.
Consider Grey Knight Terminators instead of Ogryn.

Oh crud, I hadn't noticed your list is illegal!

Infantry platoons are one single Troops choice, all of those billion squads or so. To fix that, you need to either add another PCS and count it as two platoons of two squads, or count one infantry squad as Veterans.

Lastly, do not mix weapons in a HWS. Units must have a single purpose, or they fail. 40k games do not last nearly long enough for a "Jack-of-All-Trades" to be usefull.

Ah I see what you mean by the listing. Ill relabel the squads to make sure theres no mistake. Yeah I'm already thinking of scrapping the ogryns for maybe a second platoon or a vehicle.

BTW, why do you have Voxes? you have only one officer with orders. the PCS orders are not going to do much, and paying 20 pts to insure that his one order a turn goes off for one unit (no further than 6" of course) is just silly.
Ask yourself this: would you really trade 2 meltaguns for 4 lasguns?

Took what you said into account. What do you think of it now?

Allright, now that will win a few games.
That list is a great start now, I'm sure people will decry it in a few minutes, but it's enough to get some good games in with.
I would, however look into fitting your infantry squads with a bit more kit, such as autocannons, and possibly swapping the Sniper rifles with grenade launchers.

Anyway, good luck!

Thanks. I haven't done guard since the old codex a few years back. So many new choices and flexibility with this edition its great. Once I start building them Ill post a few pics of them as I progress.

Alright, let's take a look. Everything Illeix has said so far so been good advice.

First, you command squad: you're spending a fair amount of points on these guys, and, in the end, all they'll contribute is orders, a sniper shot, and a lascannon shot.

Try something like this:
CCS + Lascannon + Vox: 75

A good bit cheaper than what you're running now. You can still put a sniper in there if you want, but...

Snipers aren't really that great - let's say you're playing another Guard player, and you fire all 8 of your sniper rifles at one Guard squad. That's 4 hits, two wounds - 10 points worth of Guardsmen die - and that's almost all your squads firing at the same target.

If you're adamant on taking snipers, why not use ratlings? They're BS4 and can infiltrate into cover - so they get a 3+ save and can get a good barrage of sniper fire off on turn one.

Platoon Command Squad: my favorite build for these is giving them 4 flamers and sticking them into an ML/HF Chimera for some amazing and cheap anti-horde. If you want them on foot, try 4 grenade launchers to provide some decent firepower.

Guardsmen: You can combine squads, so do that - that way you only need to buy one squad a Vox for all of them to benefit.

A build that comes to mind to be effective against any opposition you come across would be:

3 Guard Squads + 3 Lascannons + Vox + Commissar: 250

The Commisar gives them LD9 so they take orders better, as well as stubborn so that if something hits them in melee they'll keep fighting for a few turns without running. Add a fourth or fifth infantry squad to taste. Be sure to give one squad krak grenades though, or they'll be tied up indefinitely by a single walker.

Heavy Weapons Squad: Missile launchers, to be honest, aren't good. An autocannon outperforms them in anti-tank, and if you want anti-horde, why not just take the much cheaper mortars?

Here's a quick summary:

Mortar: take for anti-horde
Heavy Bolter: never take
Autocannon: take against AV10 and AV11, infantry with 4+ or worse save
Lascannon: take against AV12, AV13, AV14, infantry with 3+ or better save, monstrous creatures

Choose what you want most. I personally like lascannons for their versatility, despite their price.

Veterans: A bit too pricy. You're dropping 126 points on unit that's only good at close range - at the end of the day, they're just 10 guys with T3 and an okay save.

A popular build for veterans is:
Veterans + 3 meltaguns + chimera: 155

Consider that? Cheap but effective, and you always need some melta for when a Land Raider or Battlewagon is hurtling at your lines and you need to take it out.

Scout Sentinel: Good, I like these.

Choose one of these:

Multilaser: Best against AV10
Autocannon: AV11
Lascannon: AV12+

I'm partial to the autocannon, because side armor 11 is fairly common (you'll be hitting side armor because of outflanking), and the lascannon is a bit too expensive for an AV10 vehicle.

Leman Russ: More expensive that it needs to be.
It should be shooting at Marines or other 3+ saves, so those heavy bolters aren't really that great and the lascannon is more for going against vehicles - take it if you like, but it should be the first thing you drop if you're short on points on something else you want.

A common build (and my favorite) is:
Leman Russ + Plasma Sponsons: 190

You really don't need the Dozer Blade or Extra Armor, whether or not the Russ moves isn't all too important because it's not a transport and it's happier sitting and firing all 4 weapons.

Hope I helped
