So my flgs is having a tournament on the 16th. I'd love to participate while I'm in the area because up at school it's very hard to find a game. The thing is it's 2k and must be all painted. I've been playing for a while but never owned my own army until last september and as a "poor college kid" it's grown quite slowly. I put together a 2k list restricted only to what I own. Whether I can get it painted all in time is another question entirely. XP

Anyway, I'm going to be seriously crippled by the fact that one rhino (and two dreads if you count them) is all the armour I own. With the importance of transports in 5th this may seriously screw me over. That said, in my opinion the fun of playing in the tourny is worth getting my ass kicked, but I'd still love any advice on making this list at least a tad more competitive. Not that there's much wiggle room, I had 9 scouts and a sprue of black reach marines left over and that's about it. So, here's my sadly footslogging 2k of marines...

I've reworked the list a bit since I picked up a tac squad and converted it to a sternguard.

Adding the sterngaurd with a librarian allowed me to drop the captain and command squad. As much as I like the power of the command squad, it was useless without transport, and since I only own one rhino it had to be with them. Now the rhino's free to take one of the tacticals which is a major improvement.

I'm trying to focus on compensating for my lack of armor by finding other means of making an otherwise footslogging army more mobile.

The librarian has Gate to teleport the sternguard around. The chaplain, vanguard, and assault squad are all jump. One tac squad has a rhino and the devastators obviously aren't moving.

This leaves two tac squads and two dreads in the footslogging zone. Not ideal, but manageable. The one dread is a rifleman, so no real problem there. A drop pod for the other would be a huge benefit but the only one I have is scratch built and i'm not sure they'll allow it.

I think you have a shot at making something but can you list what models you own? You said you had some left over items such as scouts an such.

Possibly to do a gunline it looks like.

It looks like you can rework some points possibly with the Vanguard; also that is a toughy as the vanguard really need a locator beacon to take advantage.

Vanguard are best when used dirt cheap as a alpha strike unit. I would personally just drop the Powerweapons and leave in the Relic and Powerfist replacing the powerweapon with meltabomb goodness.

A suggestion I would have is maybe upgrading the Dreads to be venerable.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also what type of scouts ?

The models I have left after this list are:

Nine Scouts (5 snipers, 2 shotguns, 1 cc and pistol, 1 hvy bolter)

Another full flamer/missile tactical still on the sprue.

Two captain/chapter master models w/storm shield and relic blade, one with a jump pack.

The GW command squad.

I think that's all.

And yeah, I've been considering the amount of points I've sunk into the vanguard. You're right, they may be more effective at a lower cost simply because I can send them charging into something first turn and not hurt as much when they're shot to shreds afterward.

At the same time though, I got to try this list out the other day and those power weapons really paid off. Due to some poor maneuvering and a bottleneck in the terrain they wound up being assaulted by a ten man BA death company with a chaplain. They should have been rend-fodder, but they kept tying combat and basically took the death company out of the battle by stretching the combat over three turns and leaving only one Death comp member and a wounded Chaplain by the time they were finished off. Without those power weapons they would have been losing combat instead of tying each of those rounds, which could have let the death comp be a bigger factor.

Still, freeing up those points could let me upgrade those dreads or fit some snipers in, which may get me more value for them.

Also... Can the Vanguard take advantage of a locater beacon? I was under the impression that only models teleporting could, not those deep striking by jump pack.

Edit: Wow, just looked that up and realized that locater beacon and teleport homer are not the same thing. Can't believe I missed that... Man.

No way, really? It's not in Greensburg, PA is it? The Vault?

I looked at moving some points around and I could potentially drop the Chaplain's Meltagun in favor of Melta bombs (which I will probably do anyway), drop all the power weapons and the storm shield from the vanguard, and drop the assault squads flamer.

This would give me the points to add extra armour to either the rhino or one of the dreads, and add a 6 man scout unit consisting of 5 snipers and a heavy bolter.

Cool man, I will definitely check that out. Whether I'm home or at school I'm about 45 minutes from Pittsburgh, so I could definitely head down (or up, depending) there for a game.

Woah, I completely missed this post earlier. Who'd have thought I'd find so many PA players by posting a list? I am definitely up for coordinating a day of gaming sometime.

@Insanityphr33k: I'm not familiar with Legions but when I say the Vault is in Greensburg it's by the Westmoreland mall, which I guess is not really "greensburg proper." It's kind of more towards Latrobe way.

I'm in Ligonier myself, and Grove City when I'm at school. So like I said, anything in that general "hour from pittsburgh" area is "in range" for me.

Haha, no apologies. Finding players near me is an excellent reason to stray from the original topic.

And ah, Greensburgh is south of pitts, so that would explain the confusion. ; )

Yeah, I'm an hour from Pittsburgh. Phantom of the Attic is awesome, Legions, or the Vault would all be great places to get together for some awesome games. I'm going to add you guys as friends and lets keep each other in the Loop.

yeah I suppose losing to me must get boring eh? And legions is one of the seven places in the US that games workshop uses to host 'ard boyz etc, so personally its my favorite.

However, if any of you guys want a game around pittsburgh my nids or CSM would gladly join the fight.

Sweet! I will have to check that out.

Well the tourney was a blast, and I thought I'd follow this up with not quite a battle report but a brief summary of how the it went.

First, quick description of the setup. You played three randomly assigned games, each given a time limit of an hour and a half. Rolling for mission and deployment was standard, but for each round there was a little additional scenario rule. After the second battle you setup your army display style so people could vote on paint jobs while we took a half an hour break for food.

So game one I faced bunch of orks. Dawn of war, seize ground w/5 objectives. The scenario was something about a planet where friction was messed up. Anything moving more than 6 inches had to test for "sliding." On a D6 roll of 5 or 6 they scattered D6. It never really did more than move the occasional unit a couple inches, and never in a situation where it mattered.

The battle was fairly unremarkable. It ended in a 2-1 loss for me. My mistake, I think, was one of priority. I moved a tactical squad into some ruins with an objective on the far left early on and that was all I deployed. He had first turn and sent a lot after that squad. Stormboys, 6 bikes, Ghazghkull and some big mechs. More than you need for a tac squad. What I should've done was abandoned them and given myself a better advantage in another area. Instead I put a lot into defending them, so where I could've overpowered him on his weak right side I only managed to take on obejective and contest the other. (The objectives were basically set up like the pips on the "5" side of the dice.) We contested the middle and I failed to get deep enough into his territory to clear his boyz off the one remaining objective that one it for him.

Game two was against blood angles. Scenario was that there were strange disturbances in the area that were causing strange rifts in the warp. Twice during the game you could pick one unit and on a roll of 5 or 6, pick it up off the board and deep strike it somewhere. If you failed to roll a 5/6, you rolled again, and on a 6 the unit was lost in the warp. I sucked. It was a little bit due to the fact that my list was lacking in armor and his contained two rhinos a land-raider and a vindicator. But mostly, it was due to me being tactically slowed. I split up my forces.

Deployment was pitched battle and mission was capture and control. Our bases were in opposite corners. He set up most of his force all the way on my bases end of the table and only a 5 man tactical squad and a dread near his objective. Despite the fact that I should no better I left only two tactical's, the dreads and the devastators by my objective, sending the Librarian w/sternguard, Chaplain w/vanguard and the other tactical up towards what i thought would be an easy target at his objective.

Basically, he moved toward my objective with everything, and shot me to shreds, then left a few assault marines behind to eat the remains and go score. Both dreads were dead before I had a turn. The landraider didn't have to move all the close to me for the "shooting up" part of course, and had no trouble getting back to his objective to drop of it's terminators and reinforce the dread who was already raping my sternguard. (Their meltaguns had proved futile.) He basically had his majority against my minority the entire time. I got wiped. Every last man. Both of us tried to use the warp scenario twice during the game but it never worked and no one was ever lost to the warp.

Third game was against Crons and there were worms. Like tremors, kevin bacon style. Worms beneath the ground, attracted to vibration. Everytime a vehicle moved, or a heavy weapon fired you rolled a d6. On a sick, you placed a large blast on the model and rolled for scatter, subtracting the worms 'BS' of 4. Every model hit by the blast took d6 s5 hits. Wow. Holy carnage. Over the course of the game worms killed my entire devastators squad (who managed to immobilize the monolith before they went) and about another 7 or 8 marines total. They also killed 4 or so warriors and three of his destroyers.

The mission was capture and control and the deployment was spearhead. I managed to not play like an idiot. A tactical stood on my base behind on ruined building in the corner. The devs supported them from the building itself, and spent the first two turns wiping our pariahs at range. The rhino and dreads served as a moving cover for the assault squad, sternguard and third tactical. After the Monolith struck the third tactical got into ruins to shoot up warriors as the came out of it while the dread and rhino cleared a good path and deposited the assault squad in the face of some warriors which they destroyed and the 2nd tactical in front of some flayed ones that they failed to flame and bolt to death but also survived combat with just fine. The libby gated the sternguard over to the destroyers who they did good work on. (The worms finished the job later.)

My vanguard had just declared a heroic intervention and deep struck without scattering four inches away from his lord when we heard the "times up." (It was the top of turn 5, only game that didn't finish properly) No one was even within 6 inches of his objective and I still had 5 tacticals sitting uncontested on mine, so that was my one win of the night.

I could've done better, but it was a lot of fun. I thought I would be more affected by my lack of armor, but only the blood angels player had significantly more than me (out of the people I played.) Overall though, I had a hell of a lot of fun. Like I said, this was my first tournament. It was a blast.
