Ive been playing 40k for years and I've decided to get a fantasy army as the game is becoming more popular in our local gaming scene.

I want to go for a Tolkein 'The Hobbit' themed Goblin and Wolf force. I made a little wish list on the GW website comprising of:

Goblin boss on Wolf

Night Goblin shaman

Box O Night Goblins

Goblin Wolf riders

Goblin Wolf riders

Goblin Wolf Chariot


I would potentially like some more bigger and stronger things at a later stage, but I dont know much about fantasy yet so I shall buy the codex first and have a good read at that.

Any crucial points that I'm missing or any advice in general?

I don't know much about the O&G army, so I am not sure what to recommend, however I heard there is a pretty good goblin list floating around here somewhere.

My suggestions would be to pick up some goblin fanatics. Maybe some trolls to fit your theme. And more goblins.

Yea, I like the look of the River trolls. Was in GW Just earlier today since writing this, and they were trying to sell me the Battle for Skull Pass, which I wasnt going to go for due to the number of units in it that I dont want, like spiders and the Ork chariot etc, but it does have 3 units of goblins and a mini rule book etc. I could also sell off the Dwarves pretty easy.

Can anyone suggest a better option between all units of night goblins, or 1 unit of night goblins amoungst an army of mainly normal goblins? (Baring in mind the fluff of my armys theme).

I don't think any of the goblin war machines are too far fetched for your theme. Even a unit of black orcs could be used as (I forgot what they are called) the mega-orcs from the LotR.

I was also thinking of maybe a unit of Black orks or Savave orks or something, just to provide specialist help to the army, and to stop the possibility of me having too many goblins and nothing big and stong enough! Thats why I was contemplating the trolls.

So in LotR terms, Uruk-Hai and Cave troll?

I know 2 spear chukkas have helped me enormisouly, in my army i have six. also if youve got some extra points get a nice bit of squig herds then give them a battle standerd with banner of butchery that gives each of them 5 s 3 attacks

Only problem I can see is when facing fear causing armies like Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings and such. I play Tomb Kings & my friend plays orcs and goblins & if he doesn't have any high leadership models that can stop his goblins from running away when I charge him they don't do so well.

I know for a fact though in ork armies a get a ork big boss then a goblin standerd bearer with rowdy red and my goblins almost never run away
