Fluff / Background: In the 41st millennium, abhumans are descendants of man who have physically evolved (or devolved) after being isolated on worlds with various environmental conditions. One particular high gravity, low temperature planet called [ - Deleted by Inquisition - ] was home to a subspecies of man known as the [ - Deleted by Inquisition - ]. They are physically akin to the 'Ogryns' utilised by the Imperial Guard; hugely strong, massively resilient and possessing a ferocious passion for close combat and bloodshed.

In an Imperium where genetic mutation and spiritual corruption are viewed as interrelated, these abhumans were the subject of great distrust by certain members of the Inquisition. Unlike Ogryns, they appeared resilient to the ideals of loyalty and order and continued to promote their own anarchic society. They were deemed too 'feral' to be of any use to the armies of the Imperium, and hence these abhumans were simply erased from record by the Inquisition; their home planet [ - Deleted by Inquisition - ] burnt in righteous fire in the year of [ - Deleted by Inquisition - ].

Long since forgotten by the Imperium, this feral race (a cross between man and Orgyn, with the mental capacity of an Ork) have somehow re-emerged in various sectors, leaving a trail of destruction and bloodshed behind them. Although it may seem unlikely, it is believed a minority of them survived extermination by utilising a [ - Deleted by Inquisition - ].

In any case, these monstrosities should not be underestimated and need to be dealt with immediately...

Rules: As I'm using Ork miniatures to represent my army, I'll be using the Ork codex.

I'm not looking to be overly competitive on the tabletop, so to keep in line with my background I shall only be using certain units from the codex:

Warboss
Big Mek
Nobz (inc. Nob Bikers)
Meganobz
Trukks
Warbuggies
Battlewagon
Deff Dread
Killa Kans
Flash Gitz
Looted Wagon

Oh yeah, and it's not 'Waaagh!' it's 'Raaawr!'!

Other: I'm just getting back into the hobby, so this is my 'warm up' project so to speak.

I'm going to be posting updates as regularly as I can, including loads of photos, and I appreciate any comments or criticism! If it's not good enough I'll tear it apart, strip it down and start again!

Update A:

A few of my regular troopers (Nobz), painting in progress!

And the man in charge (Warboss)! He's gone through a few changes so I've just sprayed him black again!

Comments and criticisms please!

I think it's a nice idea. I like the effort you put into making their faces less orky and more humie style.

I saw that you did not include Gretchin in your list of fielded units...maybe you could do something with ratlings? Just an idea.

Sweet figures! Are those just OK heads?

Yeah, they are Fantasy Ogre heads with a bit of green stuff to form a neck.

Do they need the neck? Or do they fit on the ork bodies as is? Could I impose upon you to take a profile shot? I like the frontal shot, but want to see the connection from the side.

They vaguely fit the Ork bodies. It's a little hard to explain. The back of the Ogre heads are concave, so you need to 'pad' them out a little in the centre to fit properly. Like filling in a spoon?

From the side of the model you can't see a join at all.

If you split them straight down the middle they'd look like this:

Here is one I was practising making mohawks on!

AoBR Nobz should make awesome (and cheap) Ogryns for any IG army I think. I don't know how they scale against the actual Ogryn models though?

I should think so too! I'm not sure about size myself, but I wasn't going to lose sleep over it. They can't be much smaller than these

I think they will be a tiny bit shorter than a GW Ogryn, due to the 'slouch' of the Nob models they stand just a bit taller than a Space Marine.

The added bulk though, particularly over a weedy Guardsman, will ensure they stand out.

I'm not sure quite how to fit Ratlings into my fluff. I was thinking, if I required Gretchin, would be to use something as human slaves. Maybe something from the Empire range?

Update B:

Well that took me nothing short of an aeon!

I've pretty much finished off my first few models, always a few details you notice need touching up after you've photographed them though.

Group Shot

Nob #1

Nob #2 (I am aware of a missing arm!)

Nob #3

Nob#4

Nob #5

As I'm sure you've noticed painting is not my strong point. I am just using really simple techniques and only a handful of colours and to try and achieve tabletop standard.

Are they looking vaguely okay?

Painting not too terrible?

Any obvious flaws?

Any comments, criticisms or suggestions much appreciated!

Update C:

Got hold of a Nobz boxed set, definitely one of the best sets Games Workshop make, and a whole load of AoBR Nob models off of eBay. Quite a lot to hack up and equip with a variety of weapons!

Stated on a 'Painboy' model as well. Any suggestions or criticism's much appreciated as always!

Thanks.

Not enough comments on this thread !

I love your work on these nobz, its a really awesome concept and gives them a really unique look.
Painting isnt too bad, couple of things that could be worked on. A few smallish highlights here and there on the edges of the sharp bits and where the light is going to be hitting most would make it pop.

Other than that its a great idea and its been pulled off well.

Oh and is that a download festival backdrop in your display picture

They look stupid solo ( big heads ) but together they look good , weird ...( maybe it´s only me )

I´m using ogres as ogryns and compared to the metal bone´ead , they are a bit small ( but less aggresive )

And I was going to comment the cost but read again , and yes there are many AoBR nobs out there for sale ...

I sure want to see some paint on that boss ...

Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm building a second boss at the moment (need two to field two units of Nobz as troops!) so when he's done I'll paint them both up at the same time.

@ MrToxichazard

I've got the right paints ready to do some fine highlights, I'm a bit apprehensive though, really don't want to mess it up. Using some test figures I'll get some guys at my local GW to run through it with me.

...and yes that is Download festival! I'm intrigued as to how you worked that out!

Cheers.

Cant wait for this years, line up is pretty epic so far

Back on topic ...

Yeah highlighting can be difficult to do, if your highlighted colour is alot brighter than the base coat it looks too obvious. And you dont want to highlight too much to keep the dirty look to it. Good plan to get pro's to lend a hand, I could do with some highlighting practice

Amazing job, I'm especially liking your painboy. What did you use to make his syringe? And great concept too, makes sense with the fluff of the 40k universe and awesome to see you made a part of it your own.

They certainly are. I've been trying to get hold of some of the helmeted 'Ironguts' heads as well - I think they'd fit in quite nicely.

lowkey48 wrote:Amazing job, I'm especially liking your painboy. What did you use to make his syringe?

The syringe is made of a standard slugga, a paperclip (for the needle) and a part of a pen I think! It was just lying around in my bitz box. I'm trying to think of a few more gubbins to add to my painboy. Maybe a cleaver and some tools?

Cheers.

Update D:

Just a small update! Models aren't really as 'shiny' as they appear in the pictures. A combination of a poor camera, dodgy lighting.....and the fact I'd just 'Purity Seal'ed them probably added the effect. :(

Painboy is all done:

aaaaand an 'Uge Choppa guy (who for some reason appears especially shiny!):

I really like the subdued look myself. They look simple neat and brutal....... It's an interesting way to get an Ogre force into 40k and these are certainly a unique army.....

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Update E:

Hello again.

Firstly a changed my Painboy a little, made his facemask and loincloth a bit more 'white'. Not a great picture however, and it does look like he's wearing nail varnish... pansy.

Finished off my first Warboss finally! I fiddled around with the model so many times before I finally painted it; I'm still not entirely convinced but it will do.

When using GW's Purity Seal I ended up with a glorious white dust over this figure, so had to repaint a fair amount of it.

I've come to the conclusion that when using Purity Seal you need to:

A) Shake the can for absolutely ages.
B) Spray from at least 10 inches.
C) Spray inside.
D) Don't let the models get cold when they are drying (e.g. opening the door to clear the smell)!

Anyway, the boss:

Any comments, criticisms or 'chuck it in the Fairy Power Spray and start again' welcome as always!

Fitted out some troopers with some PK's as well, for extra krumpin'.

aaaaand another 'Uge Choppa guy for choppin'.

Here is a picture of everything I've completed so far, due to how expensive Nobz are - this is probably about 400ish points! I think they need a Battlewagon now....

Aaaaaaaaaannd finally.....a sneak preview of Warboss #2! (I need two to field Nobz as troop choices!)

I've repositioned his Klaw to try and make him look a little different to the first boss.

Any suggestions of criticisms much appreciated as always!

Thanks!

The WIP one will get pimped out with plasticard armour and scavenged gear like you suggested - need to cover up that hideous Orky glyph on his chest! :(
