I recently showed the Soul Grinder to a fellow painter and he said "Nice, but do you plan to wash it more?" This got me thinking; does this model need another wash? I did the flesh areas with Ogryn Flesh Wash followed by Baal red in the stretched areas, but I'm wondering if it needs even more?

I plan to do a watered down chaos black over some areas then run highlights over the skin. What would you suggest?

Here's the GW version. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1170229&rootCatGameStyle= Looks to have been spot painted over chaos black rather than washed.

Wash it with Devlan Mud and it will make for a very nice red. If you dont water it down the red will become much darker however, unless youd like to have it darker in which case just dont water it down!

I know know if it needs another wash, but it does look a bit plain. Perhaps its need some chaotic tattoos or some thing just to break up the red. But I think the colour you've got there is the epitome of soulgrinder chaos red.

Dont know if it fits with your fluff, but i would go with some freehand details rather than another wash.

ide like to see a darker wash on the model to make the muscle stand out .......or you could do a bit more high lighting...

it does need a little bit of added depth. Maybe a thinned down wash and a bit of a highlight to bring out the details?

Yeah that's my normal wash lol. I used it on the metal bits but wanted to try a different approach on the flesh. I like the process so far, but I agree it needs more contrast.

Now I'm wondering if I should go Dev Mud then a watered down Chaos Black in a few recesses or Devlin Mud followed by a little badab black?

Chi3f, as you say above perhaps that "final" wash would be an option towards the end to tie/blend the model as a whole ?

Agree that it needs to pop just a little bit more. I don't know if a wash would help so much as maybe some more highlighting.

I like the previous idea about putting tattoos or something on him - needs just a bit more contrast and interest points for the eye on a model that size I think.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Yeah I agree it needs more highlighting. I'm actually at the point of basing still (need to work on the arms) but this was just concerning if I should wash again before highlighting. I def plan to highlight up a bit and add glow effects from the blade.

I like the idea of freehand too. I have an idea of running runes along the shoulder to his sword arm.

Yes. Drybrush a lighter red/ pink on, and add 1 or more heavy brown or purple washes.

I just added the Devlin Mud.

I'm thinking of adding brown ink to the gouges and red ink to the "torn" flesh areas. After that I'm thinking of a light drybrush of dark red then working up the highlights to fiery orange/blood red and extreme highlights with skull white/sun yellow/fiery orange. It's what I did on my Avatar lava base, but it won't end up as bright, yet still give off some subtle highlights (I'm hoping).

I'll have some pics up again soon. THanks for the feedback

You should paint the musle sinews a brighter colour. You've done a nice job on it and it should be able to stand out!

Ok last update.

I decided to do some OSL. This is my first attempt at painting a mini like this (aside from SM helmets I guess).

Hmm..

While painting the claw arm I noticed the supply lines (hydraulic fluid?). I'm wondering if painting it green with some lighting effects will take away from the model.

On one hand I think it would look cool to add a little glow there, as if it's being fueled by fell energies. At the same time I don't want to over do is and drown the model in too much OSL (if there is such a thing)

That looks awesome. I love the depth and gradient of the blue on the sword.

Nice, definately shaping up. Blending in some orange for the hightlights and then a bit of yellow would help add some more definition to the model. here's how mine turned out:
