Which hydra looks the best? They are all pretty easy to put together. My personal favorite is #2.

Looks pretty damn nice on that rhino IMO

If you can lose the fuel tanks on the chimera I'd go for number 3 but make it a little less height in platform so it has a profile more like 2 if you get what I'm aiming at.

You think people will have a problem if I used a rhino chassis for the hydra?

They might just. Your safest bet would be to use the Chimera chassis, as that's what actual Hydras have.

I think #2 looks the best. IMO the fuel tanks on the top look like a really dumb idea.

I agree with Lexx. The Rhino Hydra looks a little odd, imo.

IMO, none of them. When I picture a Hydra, I've always wanted to build mine with a chimera chassis with it mounted in the back and a little bit lower than what you have in #3. Like others said, lose the fuel tanks too. Maybe if you have a spare basilisk, or plan on getting one soon, mount the basilisk parts with magnets, and swap it out on the gun deck with those guns.

The rhino chassis is only about a quarter of an inch narrower then the chimera. Why do you think people will have a problem with it?

If you like it on a Rhino chassis, (and I assume you're building it for you, not someone else), just do it. If anyone else doesn't like it, that's their problem.

Hydra 3, but only if there is some way to NOT make it sit so high on the chimera.

None of the above.
(I just don't like the spindly little interceptor guns as Hydra autocannons).

They don't sell "dakka" to me - more like a whispered "pew".

Chimera hull and rebuild the top deck for the turret.

If one of your three represents this:

- Chimera instead of that hellhound chassis.
- real hydra autocannons instead of this quad barreld AA-weapon of short range.

then i may suggest this variant.

Sadly in the "none of the 3 " camp, yet.

Hydra really need different guns, the AA from planetstrike is just a quad autocannon. The tanks are also useless, storage for ammo would make sense, space spent on fuel rather not.

i think 2 is the best looking but makes no sense for it to be on a rhino

re fuel tanks- the GW Design team will have got the idea from the Soviet T34- an idea that the Wehrmacht picked up on with theirs iirc

So not totally dumb- though planning to put similar on a converted Orks Traxx Schorcha- so maybe it is stoopid after all

I sort of agree with the point about height

If you go with the Rhino version, try and get the bit from the Citadel kit that is the base for the comms array or the seperate entry hatch. It fits perfectly onto a Rhino main hatch, raises the profile a bit, and has a round hatch in the middle that will take your turret, a Razorback turret or similar. I have a Black Templar Rhino modded this way, must find a pic.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

Don't want to hi-jack the thread, but what does Dakka think of mounting the Hydra quad cannons on the back of a Salamander? I was thinking of doin it for the Hydras I'll eventually build sometime....

And I vote number 3 if you can lower the turret mount (as in make it sit flush with the roofline) and lengthen the barrels some.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

the problem with that, is the Salamander kit would make it one expensive investment!

OT
i think the "regular" Chimera hull would look better than the Hellhound version. and mounted towards the rear is better looking, imho.
the problem, for me, with the Rhino is it's not an IG platform. i know, picky. and i think the quad guns look just fine.

@chromedog
not to be too grr, but the Quad guns don't look any worse than the Old Crow version you made, imho. neither are as beefy as the FW ones.
but lets face it, they are both cheaper than the FW version.

I'm gonna say 1. I'm different like that, but honestly I just like how it is situated over where the original turret was. It just makes sense from a military standpoint, where "If it aint broke don't fix it" would apply. In all probability they would use the old turret locking collar if at all possible.
