After a hiatus of several years I am returning to painting

The SM chapter I am painting will be the Space Shark chapter but I will also be using a disruptive camouflage for a couple of reasons

1) Space Marines are not normally seen with any type of camouflage
2) If I ever used it in a tournament watching some of the puritans crying SM don't wear camo just so I can show then the original Rogue Trader book (childish but fun)
3) already have had people say they have trouble looking at the test figures together as they tend to blend together

Just excuse the poor photos as my camera is not the greatest and seems to be having problems focusing in macro mode or in normal mode looking at the Sharks paint job.

I need some help on the highlighting should I use just a single colour for the highlighting or should i use 2 one for the gray one for the black?

Or if anyone has a way I could do pin striping on the marines that will not drive one insane trying to get them all parallel and each 1 to 2 mils wide

On the highlighting- I would suggest that you use only one highlight color if you are going to hard edge them. Make it thin, and it will help the marines pop a little better (that is often an issue with camo patterns).

If you want to do more complex highlighting layers, only the last one should be the same for both. Highlighting up with some greys over the black can add a lot of depth to your work.

One more note- I would suggest adding in a secondary color that doesn't fit into the camo pattern. Not because marines can't wear camo, but because a secondary color could help you define the different areas of a mini.

I've always thought that camo patterns are tricky, because if you do them too realistically, you end up with minis that just don't pop at all.

Wow those dudes are pretty well camouflaged, I can hardly see them up against the tank. I might forget about my own models not seeing them next to their rhino or even better perhaps my opponent wouldnt see them either... hmmm maybe i should just paint everything green and flock my mini's all over to match the boards we play on lol.

All joking aside, nice effort, hurts my eyes a little but I think that was more the drink last night.

Golden rule in camo for miniatures is NEVER to use real camoflage, it obscures detail and... well camoflages the mini! use camoflage inspired styles but never obscure the details and lines of the miniature.

Personally dont like that camo style much at all, i was staring at the first picture of the rhino for like 5 mins to figure out what i was actually looking at. So I guess as a camo pattern goes, it definately camoflages the marines.

I agree with odinsgrandson about the secondary colour. It will make it easier to recognise what is what and give the mini some form so that it isnt just a hazy flurry of black and white lines

I was looking at a secondary colour being the company colour to make some contrast. The bases (not shown) will be an industrial/space hulk theme which will also give contrast. One idea I was thinking was to lightly dry-brush the black to show the details. Eitehr way I will make a squad of 10 in this cammo before making a final decision over the paintjob. I will be going a bit retro and will have the Sgt wearing a banner on the backpack

The way my luck runs with dice I need all the physiological warfare so if my opponents are screaming in pain from the effects of the paint job the more of a chance I will get a draw rather than my usual loss. Everyone love me to attend games night as they know they will not be the worse player
