hey Dakka...

i have been trying to find this mini for a while...
as soon as i got him, i knew i had to paint him as a Blood Angels Sternguard Sergeant...

more views are available in the gallery post:

i like the scheme in the new codex, but i thought that the Sergeant should have a little more bling on the shoulder pads...
the rest is strictly codex coloring...

on this mini, i was trying out the Vallejo Air Gold for the first time...
i don't like it much, as it's way too bright...
mixed in with my P3 Rhulic gold, it made for a nice midtone...
on it's own, it makes a good highlight...

this was my first time trying battle damage on red...
quite a fun challenge...

i also tried my hand at marble stone for the first time...
i think i can pull it off a bit better next time...

i had a lot of fun painting this guy, and i look forward to some more Blood Angels minis...
i've got The Sanguinor on deck, and the rest of the new releases are on their way to me thanks to Wayland Games providing me with a very generous prize for my Salamander in the Golden Bolter painting contest...

thanks for lookin'...
hope you like him...

cheers

I really like the helmet, the issue i have is that the contrast in colours is muted, dont get me wrong - you are going with the fluff and the painting is amazing but the colours dont provide a nice contrasting effect.

actually.. the more i look at him, the better he looks the green is a nice touch and the black is done very well (got any tips on highlighting black, doing raven guard as my next army)

Wow! Beautiful. That's one of the best BA minis i've seen, honestly. It's subtle, understated, but badass! The black looks great on the details - very grimdark. The gold has a nice dull finish, and the red is perfect and bloody. Also the green gems are truly luminous

I really like the scope of the gun , its suprising how small things can make a model that much better

Oh this guy is awesome!

Please give a little primer on your Airbrush technique. I've never airbrushed metallics before and I just recently ordered some Vallejo AIR metallics (including Gold).

I do also have some P3, Vallejo Game/Model, and Reaper Golds...

Anyway, if you could give a quick rundown tutorial it would be greatly appreciated.

LOVE the helmet, scope, and battle damage. I still have a lot to learn...

"Your final doom is upon you... mortals!"
"Yeah yeah. That's what your Psi Brigade said too."
"No... No, he's not a demon lord."
"How do you know?"
"He doesn't dress cool enough."

thanks guys...

i really dropped the ball with the photography of this guy last night...
better pics will be taken before he goes to ebay on Tuesday...

@Murray: for black, i use all P3 paints...
first highlight is with Coal Black...
next is Greatcoat Grey...
then a mix of Greatcoat and Trollblood Highlight if it's a large surface...
final highlight is pure Trollblood Highlight...

just play with the colours a bit, and work out your approach...
it's a big jump from Greatcoat to Trollblood Highlight, but it works on small surfaces really well...

the eagle on the leg is a bunch of small surfaces, so there was no need for any mixing...
the eagle on the chest is a broader flat surface, so it needed a transition stage between the two colours...

@ Flashman: my Sanguinor will just be a copy of the studio version...
i really want to learn NMM, so using Darren Latham's step-by-step in the latest WD should be a good start...

@ Gunzhard: i'm using the Vallejo Air metals here, but i brushed 'em on...
i don't have an airbrush here with me, and never learned how to use the one i have in storage in Alaska...
i really want to introduce the airbrush into my arsenal though...

a quick breakdown would be thus:

basecoat P3 Battlefield Brown...
next is P3 Rhulic Gold...
50/50 mix of Rhulic and Vallejo Air Gold...
then a wash of P3 Flesh Wash(a dark maroon wash)...
P3 Armor Wash for the rivets...
clean up with the 50/50 mix again...
wash with GW Leviathan Purple Wash...
highlight with pure Vallejo Air Gold...
finish off with fine highlights of Vallejo Air Aluminum...

cheers
