I am putting together an amazing converted preheresy Dark Angels army by buying tons of bits and premade preheresy add on kits...I am using current plastic models that have been converted, so no old minis or rogue era minis...It is turning out great! I am using the Dark Angels codex too. The armor will be black of course, but then the color of the logo is up in the air...Some pics show red (1989 books), others white (more current publications)....The eyes are shown red (current pics) and in other pics yellow (original 1989 version)....I'll me making all bolters boltgun metal and inked black and dry brushed a little silver....gold will be used for trim on NCOs and officers....power weapons will be light blue and have glowing effect on mini......I'll be using yellowish medium flock fake grass on bases......robes will be bone white......Officers right shoulder pads will have personal heradlry on them & left is studded pad for officers & NCOs......So, please take my poll and show me what color combo you like the most or think is most accurate....here are pics (none are mine) that help visualize it.....

i say go with the rogue trader description of the livery.

Personally I'd go flat black, gold/silver bits around for officers, white insignia, red eyes. I honestly like the very knightly and individualized style presented on the 2 Horus Heresy novel covers, for the Dark Angels.

Black armour
White Insignia
Yellow eyes
Red shoulder trim

Pre-heresy, I'd go with red symbols, yellow eyes and red stripe. Maybe use that stripe sparingly, as an honor or to denote sergeants. Robes I'd keep bone, even though they should be strictly black by original descriptions.

Oh, and gold details.

Black armour, white insignia. Red eyes, red stripe down the helmet.

Why don't you look at the Horus heresy book Decent of Angels which is about Dark angels before the heresy? Here is a link for Black library's page

oh, I see....white logo & glowing red eyes...

THIS was the photo that inspired my first painted space marines. In fact I had both of the first 2; the Flesh Eaters eventually became Blood Angels when the first Angels of Death codex came out however.

My old black Dark Angels (plastic beaky's) I gave away to my favorite game store (at the time) maybe 6 years ago, so they would have a house army for newbies/etc ..and the F****ERS sold them on ebay. I could have just done that. LOL ahh the memories... that photo does bring me back.

So anyway - I like marine #1, as shown in this photo.

Here are just a few of the Fallen thus far! Note chests are crossbelts, helmets are mk1 to mk5, and use of chaos warrior legs! I have to trim up the mold lines and sprue connection left over things hanging off, etc....But so far, I likeeeee!

I bought 10 heads (2 of each) from ebayer...they are steam knight helmets and look very pre heresy IMHO....

also, I wanted to show you the pre heresy dark angel logo I was thinking of using (red on black background). Although for those that still like white logo, I do have 35 da decals and that would be easier.....

i like the second one.

Okay. So what I am thinking is-

black armour (obvious)
dry brushed lightly with bolt gun metal
red eyes
white logo (decals are faster & easier)
red & yellow stripe on helmet of Sgts only
red stripe on special weapons guys only
Gold trim on officer helmet & termies
bone white robes (aged looking though)
boltgun metal weapons, inked black, dry brushed mithirel silver
power weapons & power fists have layered dark blue/light blue/white lightning lines on them
matte sealed
eyes & power weapons gloss coated for glowing effect
sage brush (yellow) flock (fake grass)

There it is....what do you think?

I say do it.

And I'd test out the sergeant/captain/lieutenant rank stripes before committing to them across the whole army.

NOTHING about this project I don't love! PH DA was the first chapter I started painting. I've always been partial to the red symbols myself. Army is looking great so far! I remember seeing those gold-faced heads on another site thinking they'd be great for pre-heresy. Can't wait to see more of this! Dare I ask, do you plan on making a Lion?

As for the rank markings I say go for it. I saw them a while back and I love them. Don't forget the Sgt's chevrons as well. I think it will really help to add that final piece of character to the army.

Great work all round so far cannot wait to see more.
