Subject: Latest news on Battle Bunkers, Maryland and all US
|
 |
Ancient Chaos Terminator
|
Wow, I can't believe someone brought my old thread back from the dead more than 7 months after the last post in April. But as long as they have, here's the latest on what I've heard regarding the Maryland Battle Bunker and Battle Bunkers in general. First the good news. The GW real estate guy was spotted in Maryland as recently as a month or two ago still trying to scout out locations for a new store to replace the Battle Bunker. Now the mixed news. I'm hearing some talk that all Battle Bunkers might be replaced with smaller community centers that will be larger than normal GW US retail outlets but smaller than the existing Bunkers. This would allow GW to open more such community centers and more quickly since the cost would be lower per store. So, if they follow this path then Maryland would likely still get a new larger "community center" type store, but it wouldn't be as big as the old Bunker and places that still have Bunkers might find them similarly replaced. For example, such new stores might be only twice as big as a typical GW US store rather than many times larger like the existing Bunkers.

How big are the bunkers and what kind of terrain do they have, do they run tournaments regularly?
as for the community centers, I think it's a good idea, 8-10 tables is about as much as any store is going to need to run a good tournament, unless your in a big hub area like memphis or atlanta or chicago.

The Bunkers are huge, thousands of square feet. Some of the massive events we used to have at the Baltimore Bunker were incredibly fun and the place would be packed to the gills when the community was at its peak.
Today I got more confirmation of my earlier post from yesterday. If GW can't get the rent down on the existing Bunker spaces then the Bunkers will go away when their leases are up. If suites become available to expand some of the more successful smaller stores into double-sized suites then that route will be used to create a few larger community hubs where business is good enough to support it.

When no one has a Battle Bunker then that conundrum will be resolved. The only reason we had a Bunker in Maryland in the first place was because the rent for the space was covered by the fact that it was part of the HQ office suites needed for the many years the HQ was in Maryland. A day is likely coming when Memphis will have the only Bunker for the similar reason that GW owns that Memphis facility, but is looking to cut their rent in the others.

Brass,
Is there any more detail between a community center, bunker, and hobby store?
I was only ever in the Franklin Mills bunker, but have been to many hobby stores...the differences I saw were:
* Bunker had 6 or 8 tables versus 3 tables (or 2 tables and a small table)
* Bunker had 6-12 paint stations versus 2-6 in hobby store
* Bunker carried more inventroy in quantity...but had the same number of products
* Bunker had seveal staff people versus 1-2
I am trying to figure out how there will be something inbetween what I posted above?

Franklin Mills is probably a good example of the size of the new 'community centers'.

Supposedly the introduction of the FW books to the GW website is a precursor to them selling FW models on the GW website and shipping the product out of the Memphis warehouse. However, I've heard there may have been some backpedaling on those plans.
