So lately I came to a realization that nearly every model I have ever painted has been in some variation of black, red and gunmetal....and its getting a wee bit boring.
This is not to say I won't be continuing on my Stormtroopers and Guard in their red/black scheme but I am ready to try something new and so....

...SABRETOOTH MARINES!!

Basically I am keen on adding a Tactical quad in a Razorback to my pure GK army to add a bit of movement to my static gun lines and I've always wanted to create my own chapter.
I like the feral nature and ornaments of the space wolves but am not too keen on their wolf tail things hanging all over the place and hell...they've kind of been done a lot.
As I am a fan of the clinically insane marvel character Sabretooth I thought I would create a space wolves successor chapter using his costume colours and setup.
In the hope of stretching my painting skills I am going with a white undercoat (white!) and using a calthan brown and iyanden darksun scheme like so...

So I have begun playing around with a marine I had lying around as I have not decided whether to pick up the space wolves box (I don't want to have to spend hours scraping off wolf skulls, but I like the tooth ornaments and pelts) or sticking with the basic tactical marine box ( I can GS on the pelts and teeth if I have to) and I began by scraping the imperial eagle off his chest as I know the Sabres aren't going to have them. I am leaning towards getting my hands on a sanguinary chest piece and, after scraping of the weird arse nipples, making a few resin copies. Anyway here is my test marine so far

GS work first

and with paint.

I have long way to go with the chest piece obviously and he will be scrapped eventually, as I feel the muscled chest piece will give the Sabres a more wild and barbaric feel its just a lot of money to buy sanguinary guard for basically 1 or 2 pieces! I am also considering adding black lines around all the brown markings.

and one last piece, the lion head from a fantasy ogre (I think) that I gave sabreteeth, I will probably mount it on the front of the Razorback.

So thats my idea, I haven't invested too much money yet, past the cost of the paint, so I am wide open to any changes and ideas you guys come up with.

C&C is very welcome! Rama I'm looking at you dude

Cheers

BLACKHAND

Marvel villian inspired Space Marines? Im all there dude!
Okay, let's get going:

- I like the fact that you actually painted a pattern on the Marine, instead of just painting the different parts of his armor, the stripes on the legs are a really nice touch.

- A Space Marine army without any Aquillas sounds like a lot of work, but it's certainly an interesting start.

- I'm not sure about the chest atm. Is it supposed to be cloth or armor, it's hard to tell.

- You should really get your hands on the Sanguine Guard. Apart from the breast plates they have tons of great looking CC weapons, which btw, is also the reason why you should check out the Death Company box. I imagine this will be a very close combat oriented chapter, so you should go all out with that.
Also, you'll end up with a bunch of very dynamic leg pieces.

-Don't attach non-wargaming pictures, just insert hem like this:

- Is this gonna be Sabretooth only, or are you going to add a few more Brotherhood characters for fun? A Magneto Librarian perhaps.

- The lion on the shoulder is a really nice piece, you should try to get your hands on more of those and just put them on shoulder pads.

Cheers Rama!

I'm not averse to Aquilas at all, just not on the chest.

Speaking of the chest the one on the test model was me having a go at replicating the Sanguinary guard chest plate but I quickly discovered that the Sang guard sculpt is smaller than I thought and a bit beyond my skills at the moment so I just went on to the paint test stage.

I have looked at both kits for the blood angels but scraping of blood drops after blood drop seems like a buttload of hassle, I will have another look at the sang guard though as I could always sell off the extra bitz I don't need online.

I am definitely going for close combat and can't wait to do a lightning clawed leader, I have been re-reading the space wolf codex just now and think I may try a sabretooth version of a wulfen as well

I'm not sure about adding any other marvel characters as I have a some fluff developing about the chapter having a savannah planet covered in engineered paleolithic animals as their home world and dropping magneto in the mix may not fit...though I now feel the need to repaint my Vindicare assassin as deadpool...

unfortunately the lion head is about 10mm wide and wouldnt fight on a shoulder as is but I will definitely be doing somekind of bespoke shoulderpad

Thanks as always

Oh and cheers for the tip about the images

Aw pity the lion head is so big dude! You should try and make it again smaller anyway.

All looking great so far.

Looks like a great start, and an unusual colour choice for marines - refreshing to see something different. I agree that the chest plate could maybe use a little bit a cleanup, but it looks good as is. Not familiar with Sabretooth, but I really like all the imagery

Cool idea. Maybe in their fluff you could have like an exalted company who exhibited wierd healing powers and have a thing for lightning claws.

You should try to get your hands on the Sabretooth Tombstone Collection Box from Marvel. It might be hard since it was released in 1994 (I think) but it focusses exclusively on Sabretooth and the artstyle is very John Blache-like. It would be a great inspirationary piece for an army like this.

I'm really looking forward to where you're going with this concept. It has some very cool potential.

Wow, thanks for the quick responses guys,

@newt of death - I've done some thinking and I'm pretty sure I can make a cast of just the lion's head (not the mane) and it should fit on the shoulderpad which should look pretty s%$t hot.

@slave to darkness - thanks for the links man, it looks like I may have to just pick up the entire chariot for bits, plus I could run the lions as "counts as" fenris wolves.

@Anung un Rama - I do , I do want to, plus his colours would even match my Inquisition Army! MUHAHAHAHA!

@Comissar Argo - I know It's one of the reasons I am thinking of getting the SW box but there are just so many wolf skulls to carve off!

@Tim the Biovore - Good to see you here

@Scarper - Thanks man, I know the colours are different
and they are a real stretch for my skills but the whole reason for the project was to try something outside my comfort zone. Though I can't beleive you don't know who sabretooth is! Think a more psychotic version of wolverine from the X-men.

@boss 'eadbreaka - I figure the average marine has the same kind of healing powers as Sabretooth (though feel no pain fits as well) and yeah I am going to do at least one seargent with dual lightning claws.

@darkwulf - thanks man, I am thinking of diggin out all my old comics and having a read through but I also don't want to waste precious painting time!
oh and yeas , everybody SHOULD have a Deadpool assassin!

Well its gratifying to see that the idea wasn't totally crazy and is worth going on with!

Cheers,

BLACKHAND

Tim thats a little comforting......and a lot disturbing

So despite the lack of pics I have had a busy night!

After ringing round a few mates I found a friend who has a sanguinor, WOOT!

I quickly borrowed it off him and got to modelin. I made a silicone mold of his chest and cast a quick resin copy, and despite the remaining modelling clay and a terrible resin mix making a pretty dodgy cast I am fairly confidant that I will not need to buy a box of sanguinary guard for just the few bits I want., again WOOT!

I also made a mold of just the face of the lion head and when the cast popped out I am happy to say that it should fit on a shoulderpad perfectly so all my Sabres will have a custom sabretooth tiger shoulderpad.. a third time WOOT!

Don't worry I've taken pics of the process (well kind of) and can put them up tommorrow but at the moment I am spending "quality time" with the Fiance..Damn Real Life!!!

Until tomorrow,

BLACKHAND

That first picture in this thread was disturbing. Sabretooth is evidently lacking a peepee.

check out a homemade concept project called "the fighting tigers of vega" (you can probably google it, I'm too busy right now) they have a lot of big-cat oriented conversions (Voltron Lion toys?! ) for more ideas too.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

Well both of the Brothers have the healing factor and although Sabertooths talons arent as prominent as wolverines they are still nasty enough to warent lightning claws imo!

@guitardian - Why so fixated on peepees ? and thanks for the link I had a look through the Veda site, lots of imagination and creativity, I don't think I will go so heavily on the stripes though.

@eadbreaka and trilobite - I have considered Wolverine and as I'm using the Space Wolves codex I was going to do him as a Lone Wolf, and yes he will have lightning claws

So I ordered the Tac squad box and a rhino last night. The reason I went with the Taq squad was that you get twice the marines than either the Sang guard or the death company and I may want to expand the squad out to 6 (the max you can fit in a rhino) I am fairly confidant I can GS any custom details I will need and I will be cutting the legs and arms to get more dynamic poses so a few spare bits will come in handy!

Cheers

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So here is where I am after 2 nights of feverish casting.

I started with a sanguinor here...

...Made what is probably the roughest mold container in history out of modelling clay...

..and after pouring a silicone mold (and forgetting to take pics) then pouring resin and a bit of cleaning up I had both a reduced lion head and a torso, I gave them a wash of devlan mud to pick out details that need work.

So I made another silicone mold of the torso and poured resin then I had two..see where this is going?

Thats right! I was then able to pour a 3 torso mold out of silicone! And then pour 3 more resin torsos!

At this point I stopped as I have enough for my combat squad but am able to pour 5 torsos at a time, WOOT!

Here is what the test model looks like with the new torso....

..and a pic of the WIP of the shoulderpad.

I should have time to get a few coats of paint on the test model tomorrow and get to work on adding teeth and feather necklaces to the torsos, kinda like Space Wolf talismans but with a slightly more american indian feel.

C&C welcome as always

Cheers,

BLACKHAND

Wow, yeah so every time I do this I have the same response. So heres is the deal.

I am not intending to, or ever have sold any casts or reproductions of any GW models. What I do is make a mold of piece of a model than carve it down to its most basic form than make a copy of that.

Trust me by the time I am finished with these marines the torso will be nearly unidentifiable as what it once was.

If you want to see how it works check out my tervigon plog

But hey I will be the first person to feel stupid when GW's jackbooted stormtroopers kick my door down and force me to eat all my resin casts at gunpoint

I'm quickly becoming one of those people who gets easily pissed off with forum pseudo-lawyers. I know GW aggresively pursue their own IP, but no other hobby in the world has such zealous pursuers of copyright in it's fanbase.

It's not illegal to cast GW models.

It's not illegal to post images of casts you've made of GW models

GW made some shady legal side-stepping on their own site, but if you buy it, the law states you can pretty much do what you want with it, provided

a) You're causing no harm -physical, mental or emotional- or distress to anyone, including creating a potential scenario for harm.
b) You're not profiting from your endevours.

That's pretty much the law in regards to anything.

If I bought a sanguinor, I could smash the gak out of it with a hammer if I wanted. I could glue it to my car. I can certainly cast the bugger.
Hell, if I wanted I could cast my Samsung TV in resin. Their products come under the same part of IP law when it comes to the image and copyrighted design. If I'm not selling it, I can do it.

Sorry for the rant. I love this blog, BTW.
