Hey again guys. I finally got around to painting those genestealers and wanted to see what you thought about them. Let me know what you think and if there is something that you think I should do differently. This is my first miniature painting so be gentle.

pretty good, especially if this is your first attempt. i think you need to paint the talons though, also, possibly, a highlight with a lighter shade of green along those spines on the back would look good. if i were you i would completely disregard my advice, however; i'm not known for my painting prowess- i've been painting for months and struggle to get a model looking as good as that (admittedly i do speedpaint. just out of interest, how long did you spend on that model?)

again, nicely painted

Each model takes about 30 to 45min I was doing them in stages, like a rotation so by the time i was done with the last the first one was dry. What do you think I should do with the talons? Like a light skull white drybrush on the ends or did you have something else on mind?

ehm well i'm not overly sure of the colour- i find that scab red through red gore works well on talons (i layer it so it goes from a darker to a lighter colour along the blade)
the white should look good theoretically- it doesn't contrast with your skintone so won't be an overwhelming colour- i tried white on mine but because of the colours i use the talons stand out too much. i'd really suggest getting some advice from someone who knows what they're talking about, however, not my rambling madness

Haha, rambling madness, love it. Do you happen to have a pic of the scab red talons on your nid's that I could see how the transition of color looks?

not handy, i'm afraid- they're all on my home computer. i'll try and take a picture later but it won't be with a fantastic quality camera, i warn you

and yes, rambling madness deserves some love- sanity is so dull, don't you think?

Sanity is overrated. Agreed.

This pic is my first completed nid and I did learn that I need to paint the base with either a charadon granite (or chaos black depending on the effect your looking for) before applying the base sable. As you can see the primer a bit under the sable, so I will try and correct it on the first one. The rest are done to you can no longer see the primer.

I'd say from looking at the pic that you need another highlight on the back to get those ribs to stand out, or another wash over it.

As far as the talons, i'd start with a dry brush of gore, darker at the edge over most of the talon, then build it up to blood red for that recently stabbed look.

i didnt build it up as much but did similar with my brood lord.

sanity is indeed overrated. and largely pointless, since the majority of the world lives on without it.

hadn't really looked at the base much- but yeah, primer showing through is annoying (i don't really have that problem as i use black primer, and the basing material i use is dark in colour anyway- so i drybrush a lighter colour over it)

will have to wait until tomorrow (well, tomorrow GMT, i don't know what time it is in the US at the moment) for the picture, my senile father has got the data cable for the camera.

so, when you say that's your first miniature painting, do you mean first ever or first tyranid?

woah, grimdark-gore-much? that's pretty awesome, how did you get that glossy, wet effect?
my talons weren't done like that, that were painted more like it was their natural colour rather than the gory-stabby-ness type effect. scab red, red gore and flat red (vallejo model colour) progressively. my tyranid prime will get the gore treatment though

@Seriphis. Nice brood lord he looks slimy. I like the idea for the claws, yours look great, thanks. He looks full. Did you over feed him? nom..nom..

@Ashtaroth. Cool looking forward to the pic. Ya this is my first mini ever (not much of a painter I know but hopefully with time they will get better), a couple of my friends and I decided to start playing about 3 weeks ago and I kinda got ditched so now am looking for a place to go to and learn the rules and play a game. I bought the rule book and my nid codex but I am more of a hands on learner and I have tons of questions on nid's. The codex is new to me so when I read through it on some things I have no idea what it is talking about.

The slimy effect is multiple layers of ardcoat put on over top of the blood patches, the fact that its a metal model also makes the paint seem more glossy imo, theres a couple of other pics i have in my gallery that look glossy but irl they're pretty matt.

I like this color mix, iv seen a lot of people do the blech bone on the body of the tyranids. good way to army panint, but that not what i was going to say. You need to get some more action in that green you have, its a bit flat now, just like my modell. but i wokring on how to get some more life in to the green.

any how love to se more pic on your army.
