I was rooting through things in the attic and came across a load of old minis, of which this is the only one with any semblance of a paintjob which is intact and almost half decent (chips etc notwithstanding!)...

I think it was maybe 20 years ago I painted it (give or take) but I was wondering if anyone know more accurately how old it is, whther it was part of a set/chapter, a character model etc? If you really want to you can comment on the painting too!

I'm in two minds as to repaint it... It's a great model, but I'm kinda fond of it the way it is!

looks like a 3rd edition space marine captain with a converted cloak. This guy is in the old 3rd edition marine dex, nothing special about him, he is just a generic marine captain.

This model should be about 12-14 years old, since they were for sale around 1996-8.

Thats really quite nice for an older marine model. If I found one I'd be repainting it personally. Not that that ones current job is necessarily bad.

I can guarantee that is a model from 2nd edition as that is a 2nd edition bolter i was still available in 3rd but the bolter design in 3rd is the same as what we currently have

at any rate you are about right on the 20 years old end of things but id say around 1994 because as of aprox 1998 3rd edition was available

Agreed with the 2nd edition bolter,
awesome model btw, i'd strip it and redo it, not that it's bad atm, but you could make it real epic with a new PJ

When you take it off the base to strip it you'll likely find a date on the tag. Early nineties I think. I've seen this model before and it was a generic space marine captain as posted. I might have gotten one in my original starter army.

1992 or 1993 I'd believe; firmly in 2nd edition. I have the Imperial/Crimson Fist variation painted up:

It's one of my favorite minis

That is a marine captain... yep, I am currently looking at the unpainted one I own, and yes, the cape is a conversion.
EDIT:
Sorry, I have another marine that has that cape backpack, I didn't know he came with it..
Hope this helps,
RAM

The Cape Is NOT a Conversion. there were 2 versions sold in Blister packs(the second with the cape was still available in third)

I have an unpainted version of this model myself with the Cape(although the Cape/backpack piece was recently given to my Wolf guard battle leader).

I wish I still had mine in Blister so I could give the model number but alas I do not.

Here is another image of the Captain in a cape from Brevik @ Bolter and chainsword

I like the original paint job on it, maybe some sprucing up but not a total restrip IMO.

Remove the dust if possible?

Wasn't the cape a variant metal one that was attached to the backpack. Essentially a backpack variant....

Anyway, this model is a 'Space Marine Captain with Terminator Honours' from the 1991 Blue Catalogue as seen at SOLegends

http://solegends.com/citcat911/c2006smcommanders.htm

The cloack is shown attached, and as an option for all captains - this would have been in the first wave of MK7 Armour models, just before the whole beaky range was superceded by one-pose 2ed plastics....

Yeah i owned that model in 1992-3 i'm not sure. His cape was indeed attached to his backpack, and you lot must be younglings to think he is really old! (Rises creaking from rocking chair to shake walking stick at youngsters)

100% agree on this one. Infact the backpack is the 2nd edition captain pack where the cape is actually PART of the backpack. I remember that mini from when my brother first started and it was about 20 years ago. You can also tell from the bolter/powerfist. The fist is tiny, specially compared to now, and the bolter screams 2nd edition

Thanks for all the info, more than I hoped for! God bless the Internets! I wish I'd bought the CF version as posted by Brother CRM back in the day, since I'm now seriosly trying to build a Fists army... would be a great model to have in there...

I found some Judge Dredd mutant minis and some early Harlequins (I think they are anyway), but the paintjobs are too poor for public display! But if anyone knows if they would have been the same era..?

-------------------

EDIT:

I just found them on the Stuff of Legends pages; what an amazing site!

The JD ones arefrom 1985! I have Brother Obee (http://solegends.com/citrt/harlequins.htm), Mutie with Gun (top row 2nd from left), Mutie with Bazooka, and Rhode Island Red (http://solegends.com/citjd/jd3perps3.jpg)

The Harlequins are from '88, I've 3 or 4 from http://solegends.com/citrt/harlequins.htm
