I recently got a hold of the Chaos Daemons codex and was immediately smitten with slaaneshi daemons (and not just for the nudity). I immediately logged onto the games workshop, eagerly anticipating lovely, well sculpted models that would do the lord of pleasure proud. What I saw was a hideous (and expensive) scorpion tailed abomination, and a gaggle of transvestite chickens!

But I was not dismayed, in fact I was excited, because by far the most enjoyable part of the hobby is in converting and sculpting, in order to add some personal flare to my toy soldiers. I immediately raced back to the codex and found a tidbit describing Slaanesh's garden of vainglory and decided to base my new collection on some sort of corrupted forest spirit theme.

I feel that I have decent converting skills, and am looking for a challenge.

The plan so far is this:

HQ:

Keeper of Secrets - Use the amazingly sculpted deceiver model (after removing the tenticles from his head and making him abit more chaotic)

Troops:

Daemonettes - using wood elf dryads as proxies

Heavy

DP - Orion King of the Wood (this model is perfect for my evil garden theme, and is abit Slaaneshy aswell)
DP - LOtR Nazgul (I'm thinking of turning this beastie into a giant snake daemon, also gives me a pair of wings I might want to use later on)

I want to include some Seekers and Fiends of slaaneh as well, and maybe another daemon prince. I was wondering if any of you guys had any ideas for suitable proxies and maybe some converting ideas, any help at all is appreciated. Once I've got everything planned and sorted out I'll start building and hopefully share some pics with you guys.

Well going with an evil garden theme sounds cool. The dryads would be a good replacement, using my google fu i typed fiends of slaanesh. The first pic lead me to this site where a guy is using the goblin spider riders..spiders for fiends. Check it out-> http://www.thehogsofwar.com/2009/06/conversion-fiends-of-slaanesh.html . Seekers could be a bit tricky, although the deamonettes on the seekers dont look as bad as the newer plastics imo.

Those spider fiends remind me of driders...

But, back on topic, what color scheme would you choose for this army ? Would they be green, or more wild colors- similar to the plants of lustria?

Maybe even use catachans with no weapons, and make them look like the plant zombies from Resident Evil outbreak file 2 to give a possessed by greed type of thing going on... I'll just stop there before I sound even dumber..

Hope any of this nonsense helps..

Hmmm... Spiders. Zombies sound good too if I ever want to include some plaugebearers (they can count as those that got "lost" in the garden)

I had a look at some dryad colour schemes on google, and I've decided to go for a bone-white bark colour, with the swirly bits picked out in red (to make it look like they are drawn in blood). I think this will be surreal enough to fit with the daemonic theme. Not sure what colour to go for with the foliage though.

Does anyone know what the size difference is between the Fiend models and the spiders? Or would they better represent the smaller seekers?

Go with non-GW models. Nobody that you would want to play should care, as long as they're on the appropriate sized bases and you let them know what they are. Typically anyone who has a "GW Only" complex is a douche and that'll just be the tip of the iceberg for reasons you don't want to play them. Unless you're trying to do a GW tournament, of course.

As for models, Reaper makes an abundance of sexy daemoness models, as do Freebooter and Hasslefree miniature companies. The model on my avatar pic is a Freebooter model with Hasslefree models on the base, and it works great for a Slaaneshi daemon prince(ss). You may also want to look at the OOP Daemonette models. You'll pay a pretty penny on ebay, but they're vastly preferable.

You're right, these models are vastly superior, and none of my friends would care if I used them (in fact they'd probably thank me for not making them look at the current Fiend model).

So much to think about.

I think I'll start off by getting the deceiver and some dryads when my next paycheck comes in.

Pics to follow... eventually (its exam period here, so painting is at the bottom of my list at the moment)

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep 'em coming.

I know that some new seeker models are coming out in a few months, so maybe hold off on them until some good pictures are up?

Unfortunately, the last set of metal daemonettes was so superior to the current set that they command a premium secondhand. :/ I only have about 5, and just couldn't justify spending the money on enough to have anything gameable. I was actually sculpting a Slaaneshi Daemon Prince based on a pic I saw on DA ages ago, so I totally support the "sculpt your own" idea...

Personally I think the Deceiver looks a bit more Tzeenchy than Slaaneshi, but it's personal taste.

There are always some of Juan Diaz's 6th edition 'sexy' metal daemonettes on ebay. However they can command prices of up to $80-100 AUD for 10 models. Thats still not actually much more than they would cost ($20 blister packs for 3 models) but it can be a bit daunting. I managed to snag a lot of 70 for $240 . Seekers (the mounted ones) can be around $100 for 5

Have a look at 'Sersei's Slaanesh Daemon Army' in the P+M Blog section. He's selling a custom sculpted sexy demon princess on ebay for ~$55 AUD which is quite nice.

I saw Sersi's amazing work, but I'm afraid my sculpting skills are no where near that level of quality, i still find that without a "base" miniture to add structure my sculps look "nurgley" (green and blobby), however I'm always trying to push my skills to the limit.

I'm quite content using alternative models for my army, as it gives me a chance to work on kits I wouldn't usually have a chance to play with. I'm quite excited about using dryads for daemonettes, and (maybe) goblin spiders and Fiends, depending on thier size and how terrorfying I can make them (they look abit static on the website). I think that an integral part of a Slaaneshi force is that it must be wholly disturbing, yet at the same time strangely beautiful graceful (unlike Tzeetch, which is disturbing, but has all the grace of a burning lunatic).

I googled "disturbing" today in an attempt to avoid study, and as you can imagine I got a whole host of pictures that are not meant for human eyes. I also got a picture of that baby eating monster from Pan's labyrinth, and decided that I wanted to base my Keeper of Secrets on that guy (using the deciever body, hacking away at the head and resculpting an eyeless face)

...hopefully I'm not getting over ambitious.

Would this work? Or are my faceless garden monsters starting to sound ridiculous.

BTW: thanks for all the input guys, I'm brand new to the forum and everyone has been incredibly generous in contributing so far.

The faceless demon prince sounds cool. As for the goblin spiders they are a bit static but ive seen ork players make them look more lively. Being plastic its a load easier to convert them. The dryads again sound cool, I really like the looks of them and have seen them used for loads of armys (some great dead tree looking ones for a vamp army). Cant wait to see what you do.

I love the idea you have for your army, it's new and sounds awesome. As for sculpting, there are tons of tutorials you can find online. Try searching green stuff tutorial into google and see what you get, there are tons. Also, I found this which has a lot of different conversion and sculpting tutorials.

The only thing I can say is keep at it, I'm learning myself how to use greenstuff and sculpt with it, take your time and keep trying. Always use more than you'll need, it's easy to subtract from than to add.

Nothing currently, got out of the hobby, maybe getting back in?

Dude, if you need a Deciever model I have an extra without the pointing arm. I had to use it to repair an Orion conversion made from the deciever. I'll give it to you if you want.

Actually, you can also look at the models from the Inquisitor range for head/limb swaps. They're roughly the same scale as the Deciever. I used the Kal Jerico head for my Orion and it works fine. *shameless plug*

That looks pretty sweet.

As a side note though, instead of double posting try editing your post instead. Some people get really miffed about it.

That orion/deciever conversion is awesome, very inspiring. Thanks for the offer on the deciever body btw, but I sorta want the pointing arm so my troops know what direction to go , and because I want him to look like he's reaching out for your soul.

How did you do the foliage on that model? because I want my bases to be choked with thorns and leaves (and maybe some lopped off limbs)

Well dude, I'm sorry, but I looked in the new rulebook today and saw the new Seeker model, and it is absolutely hideous. Big ole' thunder thighs and a daemonette that looks like they just took a standing model and put it on this thing's back.

Have you seen this one? http://www.fantization.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=7127

I saw it and thought of this thread (I, too, am looking to make a conversion Daemon army, but I'm trying to go for more of a Tzeentch theme ). She could make a decent Keeper of Secrets or Daemon Princess maybe, or modded into something else. She's just too perfect for an Evil Garden of Excess theme!

There are also a few models of nefarious-looking flora in D&D miniatures, which could potentially be converted: http://www.trollandtoad.com/Collectible-Miniatures-Games/4485-1285-1324-4415p1n10.html
