there are rules for the squiggoth in the feral ork army list and I assume that the FW rules aren't that different.
it moves only 6 inches a turn, but it can transport units, so when it's closed, you can't exit the "vehicle" and charge in the same turn. tha is of course only of importance if your interested in the way it "would" play....

keep it up

Dude, you're missing some great modeling potential.

Flip the speaker on its back so it points upwards, Use cloth, mesh or something similar that won't block the sound but also won't buzz or rattle when it vibrates. Glue the material to the rim of the speaker and you now have a drum. And to compliment your speaker/drum, have an ork beating the wardrum and some grots or orks working on the howdah...perhaps loading battery-sized projectiles for a large cannon.

EDIT:  And if laying the speaker down won't work, consider a vertical arrangment similar to the Japanese taiko drummers...

I think Furious' idea is pretty badass.

Smoke is overkill, but woud be okay just on its own.

Save the smoke for a dragon model.

Have you tried lining the inside of the mouth cavity to see what gets the best acoustics, even paper might make a difference.

If you get good sound from a mono speaker through the mouth go for it. Let your opponents and bystanders work out for themselves where the sound is coming from.

You do need a switch on the squiggoth that is easy to access. The back of the howdah sounds ther best place, disguise it as a shield. Fantastic though your idea is the novelty can wear off quicker than the effort building it if overused. I had a think about this. If you play Dawn of War ork music on constant replay use the switch to turn it on and pump it out every ork movement phase. Then turn if off at all other times (except whe you are showing off your model of course). This will add dynamism to your game and will never run out of value.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Anung: The FW rules are substantially different.

The smoke is not an idea I'm seriously considering anymore due to paint concerns. I don't want any electrical trouble from it, either.

At this point my plan is to build a new, bigger howdah that will properly accomodate all the dakka I plan on incorporating (2 zzaps, 4 rokkit launchers, and 5 big shootas ) and conceal the electronics within easy enough reach that I can turn it on/off and change the batteries regularly.

Meanwhile, I've put together a small playlist of what I have planned to put on the squiggoth so far. I unfortunately can't embed it in the forums, so click here to listen.

I think the 2nd song down might actually be my favorite for Orks.

I too think that the 2nd song is the best for Orks. I however, have to disagree with the choice of Machine Soldier. While a great song, it seems to mechanical and structured for Orks. Everything else is a good choice.

Also, what's the status of your Boss?

A new day, a new time zone.

I hope you're not going to let that the original howdah go to waste. I bet you can make a great orky watchtower or something out of it.

Okay.

The drum idea is a decent idea.

If you'd prefer to bring a little psycological warfare into it, however, youw ant that speaker facing your enemy.

Since you're already rebuilding the Howdah, herre are my suggestions. Let me know what you think.

Face the second speaker forward. Mount it on the front of the howdah. Build he howdah up around it. Cover the front of the speaker with BLACK fabric & model some grating over it. When it is all painted up, it'll look like grating on the front with a black background.

Now, for hiding your components... You can hollow out the body to hold something. I think, likely, your MP3 player. Yes, that's right, the player itself. take tht central strip if armor going down the Squiggoth's back and remove it, down into the body, deep enough to slide the player into. It looks as if the player is narrow enough to fit into the body at that angle.

On the howdah, make a false floor. Put your electrical components there. You can have the on/off switch accessible from the back. Considering that the stitch is a sliding one, you could attach something to it (brass rod, for example) and have that rod stick out of the back of the howdah. Attach an armored plate to the rod... simple slide the plate back and forth to turn it on & off.

What do you think?

to hide the 4 double A batties, try this out since they carry lots of extra stuff on squiggoths, make them into fuel tanks for burnas, with a little plastic card and some extra wire you could amke them into a nice set of fuel tanks that you can place anywere on the model , Just my opinion

Cool playlist (kudos for My BLoody Valentine and Laura Veirs), but I think you should create some sort of barely audiable subliminal track with the phrase "You're going to lose" repeated over and over again. Try it every other game, and see if it has any effect.

So, I've resumed work on this thing now, having successfully weathered all of my midterms.

I'm resolved to be building my own howdah, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what I want to do with it.

Here's what I know:

- There will be 2 Zzap Guns, hopefully on pivots so LoS isn't a problem.
- There will be 4 Twin-Linked Rokkits, and while I would like them to be on pivots I doubt I'll be able to
- There will be 5 Bolt-on Big Shootas
- There will be a Big Mek riding this thing with a Kustom Force Field
- There will be 8 Flash Gitz with him, 4 of whom have Big Shootas.

With all that said, I'm thinking about how much bigger I want to make my Howdah over the Forgeworld one. I sort've want to bulk it out a little bit to properly accomodate all the electronics and speaker. I am thinking that because the Big Mek is going to be riding along on this thing, he needs a special place to stand, probably towards the front of the Howdah so he gets the best view... The models riding along are all going to be based separately - not part of the actual model.

The problem I'm having at present is that nothing is creatively striking me as a starting point for building this Howdah. I don't really have a mental image in my head. As such, I was hoping some of you fellas might be able to help get the old wheels turning, as it were.

I'll be playing around in Sketchup for a little while trying to see if I can come up with anything.

Ok, build the howdah tall instead of long. Use the original base piece and build up! add an additional storey, possibly with a smaller tower on top with generator bitz sticking out (representing the KFF).

Traditional imagery of a howdah, by peiople who had never seen an elephant was a large mock stone tower of at least three storeys on an elephants back.

Dude, since a squigoth is not a vehicle you only have to measure line of sight from his base. That means that there is no line of sight issue. You could have modeled him with a bionic man-part and called it a zapgun and it would still be just as effective and a turret mounted zap gun.

Maybe have side howdas in addition to the top one? The big gunz on the sides, well some of them, and have the main squad and artillery and whatnot on the top.

Chop the tower of the LotR war mumak of harad and glue it on top. On second thought that might be a bad idea... I got nothing else.

I had another idea on what you can do with the second speaker - model it as a sattelite/communications dish. Or a forcefield projector (I forget the orky slang for those). Yet another possibility is using it as a sunshade (umbrella) for whoever is commanding your crazy ride.

I HAVE PICTURES

Here is an idea from me, basic big square howdah (I couldn't think of anything original for that), with two towers on the back with the pivoting Zzap guns, then four (two per side) sorta hanging out beds with pivoting twin linked rokkits, then pelnty of room for the FLash Gitz!

First without Orks:
THen With them (sorta messy I know):
Just an idea or two (like 6 hours of MS paint time hehe)

*EDIT* Just finsihed reading your post heh, as for a cool place for the Big Mek to stand, the pic looks like it needs a BIG cannon or something sticking out of the front, maybe the Mek could be riding it, or bashing it with a wrench?! (or reaching for a bigger wrench hehe).

Idears!

Two small comments:

1. Add the weapons on pins rather than glue them on. Thus if you ever see a new ork Codex before the turn of the century you can rearm it to whatever is now legal.

2. If you follow the suggestion for an open topped firing platform use grots as gunners, then you will have more room for the gitz.

I hate to bump this thread up with no real new progress shots (though progress has been made, in some ways) but an idea has just struck me that I find monumental and I wanted to get feedback on it.

Periodically people would remind me that Goff Rokkers would go well with the musical aspect of the squiggoth, but I've generally been writing it off as a more 'fun' thing than anything. However, a particular picture somebody sent me today has inspired a horrible 2nd-edition style idea at the very deepest levels of my orky desires:

Now, this might seem like just an awesome image, which it is. However, it's also much more.

I'm struck with the idea of turning the entire squiggoth into a roving concert. Instead of traditional Flash Gitz with shootas and big shootas, my Flash Gitz will be armed to da teef with kustom noise-beakie-esque shootas resembling guitars. The sort of thing pictured above would represent a flash git with a shoota. What would represent a big shoota?

What other than a double-barreled guitar shoota?

Even better, I could put a few of the humorous conversions I'm fond of in - a grot on vocals, and one lighting the 'pyrotechniks' that would serve as the 4x Rokkit Launchas I was going to model onto the squiggoth. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is how I would manage a Big Mek with a Kustom Force Field - I am thinking something either amp or drum related is in order.

The drums could actually be interesting - I have the drums and drum arms from the fantasy orks that I could include, and I could maybe figure out a way to wire them into controlling the zzap guns. Hit the left drum? Left zzap gun fires. Hit the right? Righthand zzapy.

I hate to scrap a lot of my previous ideas for this sucker, but this just seems too good to pass up, especially as the squiggoth already plays music. What do you guys think?

I love the roving rock concert idea! *pictures a full out like rock-concert stage with lights and all, except populated by Orks and Grot Roadies... also picturing some awesome Ork-mullets* duuuuuuuude!

I would go with the new idea, it's awesome... Haha rockit launchas!

Sorry, right, sounds great dude!

I sympathize with Gaaargh. You can do what you want, of course, but I tend to think less of "joke" models. This doesn't mean I lack a sense of humor. For me it stems from the old 2nd Edition days when GW obviously didn't take orcs seriously at all and the army list and figures were all based around "Ren & Stimpy" getting guns and rockets. It clashed so brazenly with everything that 40k is supposed to be that I was unwilling to take up the hobby at that point. It wasn't until 3rd edition where orks became hard killing machines that I took an interest. For me, it showed that GW was finally taking their fluff seriously. I guess, for me at least, 40k isn't where I go to see minstrel stuff. I want my army - and my opponent's army - to look like they're a serious threat. I generally will refuse to play against people who's marines look like little cuddle bears or their elves look like hippies with bell-bottoms or other such stuff.

Please understand... none of this is a value judgement on you or your project. It's a value judgement for me and hopefully might provide you some insight as to why some of us might not endorse the concept of "rock concert" figures/armies in 40k or whatever. Am I making any sense here?

Aside from being, as already elabored above, absolutely contrary to the tone of the 40k setting?
