I like 40k mostly due to the original backstory. I started playing in RT and was talked into collecting space orks. You want to talk imbalance, marines had it all back then. I kept collecting, painting and playing up until 3rd ed. Was still in love with backstory.

Then life got in the way and was forced to only collect and paint till 6th edition rolled around. Played some games and didn't like it much. So now I just collect and paint my orks now. And it's still due entirely to the awesome back story.

Nothing has ever gripped my imagination as well as 40k has.

Multiple factors:
-We have a very high standard of what's cool. Normally a power loader with a superhuman pilot is cool. But to us? Its an abomination. I'll go back to my Murder worshipping Vikings riding horses given watered down blood, with skinless bears driving their chariots.
-Warhammer does DBZ gak with the primarchs. (Magnus makes DBZ look conservative) but they understand how fething crazy that really is. Thus they to do everything to justify this. From primarchs being 12ft tall and weighing in at thousands of pounds, to having a similar creation process to daemons (massive amounts of warp energy)
-Warhammer has an understanding of scale in my view at least. hundreds of thousands of people on a ship say the naysayers! Absurd? Not when that ship is the size of a massive megalopolis (15km by 3km by 5km)
Among others.

Finally found my quote from a gym buddy born and raised in South Korea:
"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Were it not for the fact that these graphs point upwards and GW make money I'm not sure I'd be into the hobby.
The ramifications of them making money is that a successful company exists, is accessible, progressive, polished, and professional.
So yeah it's probably a contributing factor.
I clicked combination of above but yeah the poll is pretty flawed.

I was first introduced to 40k when I guy in my middle school brought an Ork codex to the cafeteria back in third edition. So the models and art got me interested, but the backstory was why I stayed. Sure, it started off as a kitchen sink sci-fi that pretty much ripped off a bunch of other sources, but since then its evolved and refined to become something more. I think part of what makes the backstory of 40k special is that it HAS been around for so long, and has been added to by a bunch of different people. It just FEELS deep, with all the races having detailed backstories that stretch back millennia, and every faction having a different appeal. It's a universe where almost anything is possible, and yet everything is really, really dark.

40k is 111% science.

Yes, the ridiculous claim was made. However, as expected, they are denying it after being called out on it. However, we all knew they were wrong when they made it so if they want to strawman up and deny it. I am perfectly willing to let them back out gracefully (well, as much as they can anyways lol)
On topic, the real purpose of the poll is to find out what actually got people interested in 40k and why they like it. This because I see so many different views on different aspects.
As a huge critic of GW (you would be hard put to find a bigger critic here), I am one of those rare critics that are actually 100% honest and gives credit where it is due regardless of how much I would want to do otherwise. GW has done a few things right over the years...

Models. That is what got my attention or caught my eye. The idea of the "Eavy Metal" team really paid off. The first thing I thought was how to use their models in my RPG career. Then after seeing the artwork and reading the fluff, I was hooked. For the game itself... meh. It's ok and different editions and variations have caught my attention over the years. However, I woyuld be just as happy (likely more so) using a different ruleset from a different game with everything translated into it keeping the fluff.
Sorry, for the bad poll, I was hurrying before work and I never was good on computers. If someone is able to redo it and put up better options, feel free. I'm just curious to see which aspects are more "popular".

No, it wasn't. You took a statement about GW's financial progress over the last decade to mean something completely different to what was actually said.

Seriously, it's time to move on.

I am noticing a common trend in your posting. You frequently make ridiculous claims that other people are saying things that they never said and then you refuse, ignore or are incapable of actually linking to them because they never actually happened.

I, like most people, will continue to believe that no one ever said or even implied...
Since someone here is adamant that this is not the case and that each and every person who has ever liked 40k in the entire world to date, contacted GW and made their decision to like 40k based on graphs of profits
...until you can actually provide some EVIDENCE for it. And no, not a link to the entire thread, I mean a link to the specific post.

Dude, I get it. You're upset at people that talk bad about a game you love. I know the feeling.
However, making stuff up that nobody said to make your own arguments look better isn't the way to go.
No one ever said what you say they said. Either give a link or stop this nonsense. It's embarrassing.

If EVIL is 100% honest, perhaps he could give us a fair and unbiased appraisal of why he's banned on Warseer?

I'm sure, given his fair and honest criticism of GW, it couldn't possibly be to do with him pulling the same flame-baiting bs that he's been doing since he started posting here regularly.

Hmm, member for ages, only recently seems to have started posting regularly, banned from Warseer.

I wonder if there's a connection?

Or perhaps you guys could read the rules for the site and follow them. I have and do.
Failing that, Try to remain on topic.

Many of the reasons I originally liked 40k are gone. As it seems to me the company was run by gamers for gamers, they made things a lot more fun. With the loss of that attitude, I have found myself only liking the fluff and models.
Some of you may be old enough to remember the conversion corner type articles where the Eavy metal team would show their stuff and give tips. Of course, even the newcomers have heard of the deoderant bottle hovercraft. How about the spce marine dalek combinations? Or where they explained how to make missile launcher tubers from sprue and make laying down marines firing it?
How about weapons being mixable between box sets? The missile launchers came with the rtb01s, las cannons with the guard and heavy bolters with the squats but you could switch them between the different sets and them still fit? That was another aspect I enjoyed.

I don't see a [MOD] tag under your name. Weird, cause it sounds like you're trying to be one, but failing miserably on all counts. But whatever keeps you dodging any questions pointed your way I suppose.

I enjoy the fluff. I also enjoy most of the aesthetic choices of the game, though the whole 'SKULLZ' thing get a little out of hand at times.

Not a fan of the back story or models GW makes. The rules are ok from a casual point but what I do like about 40k is the freedom you have with the imperial guard. I can take any uniform from history or any human from anything and turn it into a Guard Force. Of course GW makes it hard to do this, but its the only reason im into 40k.

But since GW is getting rid of this aspect with each edition I may end up getting rid of them entirely.

But man are the Imperial Guard cool for the reasons above.

Well, GW did do some cool models for Guard, or at least had some really good ideas.

The fluff, likewise, used to be a much better. The short story about the Battle of Mordian is still my favourite thing ever, but sadly they haven't done anything like that since.

Just be glad we have Vic Minis to fuel our needs, eh?

1. Guys, as much as you may disagree with other users, it is up to us to whack people, not you. Stick within the rules of the site.

2. Don't start a thread based on one point, then tell everyone to be quiet about that point. It's disingenuous and borders on trolling.

This thread is on its last legs unless you can come together and clean it up.

No one voted artwork. Blanche was always a favorite of mine. he was able to cram a lot of stuff in his work and ive a great impression of grandour. Was never a fan of his model conversions butliked his artwork.
Good lord, its been a while and I havnt the foggiest who did them, but i also liked the almost cartoonish pictures of space marines and stuff with the little graffiti on the armor and vehicles. Little mottos and letters on power fist knuckles and stuff like that. it always got my attention and made me look for more and thus look more closely at the picture subjects. never really see anything like that before.

Edit: The thread was based on the point of finding out why Players liked 40k. A simple fact finding idea to see how many were like me, how many looked at different aspects of the hobby, which parts appealed to them more ect ect. Nothing else. Thank you for stepping in. I have been trying to keep it on topic and appreciate your support in trying to assist in that.

If you're not willing to actually discuss the issue that this whole thread was mistakenly based on, I'm not seeing any further use for the thread, frankly. We're done here.
