I think you have to look at a random sample - now this won't necessarily be accurate but let me try some estimating using Ottawa, Canada which has roughly 1 mil people (in the greater area).

We've got about 5 stores where people play regularly, which is about 20 people per store. And I know there are quite a few garage players who don't play in-store so lets put that to 40/store.

So lets say 200 people in an area of 1 million. (or 0.02% of population)

0.02 % of 7 billion = 1.4 million

So even if we say that warhammer hasn't reached half of the world, we are still left with 700000.

Which kinda makes sense, if you figure about maybe 1/10 have signed up for dakka dakka (someone above said something like 70k dakka users)

.....no.....

There are a lot lot less players than 700,000 world wide

GW would be incredibly happy if that was the case.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

I think you are mistaken. GW's revenue was about 120,000,000 last year. Which between 700,000 customers, would mean each one is paying roughly £170 per year on average. That would mean a decent purchase like a squad or a tank every other month for the whole year. I would say that's actually quite a lot, considering how many players might go many months without buying more than the odd pot of paint. There should definitely be more than 700,000 GW customers, not to mention war gamers in general.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Another way to look at it is that GW have about 350 shops worldwide. 700,000 players is 2,000 per shop, ignoring independent shops, which is roughly six people per day.

It doesn't sound a ridiculous figure.

However I think a lot of GW's revenue comes from newbies who spend a lot in their first six to 12 months, then tail off.

For example: AoS newbie might buy the starter set, a scenario book, two terrain pieces, and two boxes of Sigmarines, for a total of £300 in his first six months, get a couple more kits and another book in the next six months (£105), then slow down buying because he has got a lot of what he wants.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

It sounds reasonable enough; it's probably the correct order of magnitude anyway. Estimates put GW at 25% of the wargaming market at most, which would drop the annual spend to around £50, which is low but not totally out there. That's at least 2 full 6mm armies, for instance.
