I hate agreeing with Peregrine. But he's right. Your friends are being a couple of asses. You have no obligation to let them know which army you're playing. The fact that you do is a cool thing on your part. And they're claiming that them getting the same bonus against you in other games is different....are they high? Seriously. You should be offered a sainthood for your good graces in dealing with their crap.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

If that's the case then I think it's even more likely that they just aren't into 40k anymore. It's possible that they only play it because you do and even that might not be enough to make it enjoyable anymore.

Maybe it's time to find a new minis game? One that all of you would be interested in collecting and playing.

That's what I'm thinking; why not try a different game, and look at one of the multi-player boxed mini's games (Super Dungeon Expore is brilliant for that. As is Zombicide).

Playing some games where you work together may be a good "bonding" experience.
The complaining and whining sounds like trust issues and no one needs that problem with their friends.
Good luck!

If you're only getting together every 8 months, it's probably more important that everyone is enjoying themselves rather than worrying about who is being wrong. Might be time to find other 40k players to get that fix in and spend your rare times with these friends doing something else.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

If you're only playing once or twice a year, you probably want to be playing something a lot simpler than 40k too.

If you end up looking at SDE, the new version, legends, comes out the end of the year/start of next and they've just hired a very talented rules man
