In KoW's case it was because the models blew me away, rule of cool. The nightstalkers mini's just do it for me.

Edited cause I can't type.

So, during the great lockdown, which happened to coincide with my military retirement, I had a lot of free time. I decided to work on an army project that I could use for lots of game systems. In particular, systems that didn’t have a ton of players out there but that I was interested in all the same. I was thinking of games like Lion Rampant, Oathmark, and Oldhammer editions, so I went with a 13th century medieval theme and based them on 25mm circles, while also getting trays for them to work in other systems. After about a year I extended the idea to getting them into larger systems as well and I made basing solutions for Kings of War and Age of Sigmar. I only really played them in Kings of War a couple months ago, and I have to say I like the rules better than AoS3. I decided to add some more fantasy models to spice up the army and make it play a little better as well. I am almost ready to take these guys to their first Kings of War event in December.

Your army looks amazing Rivetbull.

I chose Nightstalkers because they felt a bit unique, I liked the sculpts overall, and I had a feeling they would take well to contrast paints for fast work.
They did for the most part:

Sadly due to money I no longer have any of the armies that I had when I started this topic.

It might be time to start a new one now though, what with ambush and everything. The new ogres are good, right?

That's sad to hear. I hope things are going better for you.

I haven't seen the new ogres in person, but I hear very good things and what I've seen online looks great.

Ogres are also a great entry army.
You don't need a lot of ogre models to make an army, so they're quicker to paint up and a little easier to squeeze value out of if you need to.
Also a fairly balanced army that gives you most of the tools.

Things are slowly getting better for me! And yeah, starting an army that's quick and not too costly is kind of ideal right now. Plus, ogres are just fun.

I bought the Forces of the abyss mega army but only used the models for one page rules. Bought an orc army intended for KoW and slowly chipping away at building and painting. Same deal as above.. Got a great great on halflings I need to build and now I bought baselia.. I think you can see a theme.

Plan to mix baselia and the halflings to make Rhodeia and use that as my primary army... maybe undead halflings..

Picked up the Sands of Ahmun starter, because I always liked the aesthetic of Tomb Kings back when WHFB was a thing, so I really wanted to play Empire of Dust. Having Ogres as well was a nice bonus, as they are going to be much easier to actually get battle ready (just 13 ogres in the starter compared to 51 skelly bois). Not sure how soon I'll get around to painting any of it though.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 25 | Current main painting project: Kruleboyz Spearhead

Also, you can use Ogres as mercenaries in any army. I usually take a Shooters horde for armies that are weak in ranged combat. 30" range forces enemy wizards to be careful.

Ogres for everyone! There was a time I wanted Tomb kings, or at least that style, but I'm just not the best at putting together fiddly little skeletons.

Well for Kings of War.
The reason I picked was I already had my GW armies for Empire and Vampire Counts and the game blew up.

I already had many VC models that were Mantic already. So they Shifted over.
