Hi,

First Tutorial and all, but I hope it's one that somebody will find useful. I apologise for not having Step-by-Step Pictures, but it's pretty easy to visualise.

So, this is a Tutorial on how to Paint Hazard Stripes. I've chosen to do some on the Rotors of the Deffkoptas I'm painting up, so I thought I'd give a quick Tutorial on how I'm achieving this.

1. Primer Prime in Citadel Skull White Primer, or whatever Equivalent you're using.
2. Base Coat Coat the entire Area in Iyanden Darksun.
3. Tape Off Use Masking Tape to Tape-Off the Stripes. Ensure you have crisp, straight edges, and that the Tape is sticking to the entire Surface Area. Otherwise, Paint will sneak under the edges.
4. Base Coat Coat the Stripes left visible in Chaos Black. You don't need to be precise here, just make sure you don't miss any areas. [i]As an extra precaution, however, Paint from the Tape, onto the Stripe. This will minimise the Paint which leaks out under the Tape.

5. Remove Tape Remove the Tape, and admire your Stripes. You can Tidy Up by hand, if you like. I left mine with the few Splotches and Spills that I had, in places, as it keeps it looking suitably Orky.
6. Wash Give the entire Area a liberal Wash - or 2, if you desire - of Gryphonne Sepia. This will tie in the Colours, and shade your Iyanden Darksun.

Finished! Hope you find it useful!

Yeah, they'll look sweet on the Table Top. You're quite welcome, I'm glad I could be of some use!

+ Edit + Another quick shot, this time with both Rotors done. In case you're wondering, the other two will be done in Red and either Black or Silver, in order to denote this chap being the Squadron Leader; I don't play Orks, so I don't know if there is such a thing, but I'm taking this from a Fluff point of view, so there you go.

Hm... I'm not sure, I'll time myself next time! Excluding Drying Times, but including Taping Time, I'd say 3-4 Minutes? It'd be quicker if you did them at the same time, of course. Iyanden Darksun and Chaos Black will each take you 45 Seconds, and the Wash will take 30. Taping will take 90-120 Seconds, and of course allow for ~ 30 Seconds of Touch-Up.

I did mine just the opposite way. Basecoat black, tape, basecoat the inside stripes with Dheneb Stone, then Golden Yellow. Super easy to do.

Both would work, and both are perfectly suitable for any application, but my way is quicker.

You're welcome! Incidentally, the Picture and Lighting - the best I could do at that time of day - make the Yellow look dirtier, almost exaggerating the effects of the Wash. It looks even better in the flesh. Good luck!

Also, as a suggestion, you can mask off the area, then paint with the same color as the base a layer along the tape (the yellow), then after it drys paint the other color (in this case the black). That way the first (yellow) coat seals the mask and doesnt allow the black to seep through, giving a nice clean line. The same technique is used when you paint lines on the walls of houses.

Nice and Simple!

As for squadron leader, technically doesn't exist but does, kinda like squad leader for SM (Leader under Combat tactics rule), So basically Tabletop, counts for nudda, fluff and personal intrest, whatever you like!

I'm just here to look at pretty pictures, and be an ass.

Fantastic, I'll certainly put this to use.

Question though, any way to shrink the process down for, say, Chaos Marine Shoulderpads?

same thing but more fiddly

Thanks for all the encouraging and grateful Responses! They're much appreciated.

For the Chaos Space Marine Shoulder Pad, as Paint Brush Turkey says, it'll be the same Technique, only more fiddly. Because of the Size of the Masking Tape - that is, if you're using a Standard Tape Size - means that you'll need to tear it down, so that you're only left with the Edges. This way, you can assemble them Back-to-Back, so that there's a Straight Edge on each side. I hope that makes sense - if not, I'll Post a Picture, or even a Seperate Tutorial, of what I'm talking about. Just ask if you need it.

+ Edit + Or, instead of all that tricky Tearing and Aligning, Tamiya do some Masking Tape, which I believe is available in 6mm and 10mm Width Varieties. The 6mm would do Shoulder Pads just fine, although you may only get 2-3 Stripes in...

A similar technique using tape works real well for adding thin lines to things, like "vines" wrapping around a predator's turret, or lines on a tau tank.
