Brilliant work. I really like the halved color scheme, and your vehicles are just as well-painted as your infantry. Often, people struggle with one or the other. The only real constructive criticism I can offer is on your bases. Right now, it really looks like your men are standing on a field of corn flakes. A dark wash like Devlan Mud would add some depth, followed by a drybrush of Bleached Bone as a highlight. A patch or two of static grass would add a little visual interest without drawing away from your work. Woodland Scenics makes a great line of ground cover, and they're a whole lot cheaper than the GW alternatives!

Those models really pop and are painted beautifully. I do see a little bit of thick paint on the starter kit sarge's leg tho. (the only negative thing I can find)

Thanks loads for the comments!
@Norsehawk - Yup, I think I'm definitely guilty of laying the paint on a bit too thick with all of my work so far to be honest - definitely something I'm working on. I've noticed quite a few bits like that after photographing them and blowing up the photo.
@Armyman - {HomerSimpson} mmMMMmmmm.... field of cornflakes.... {/HomerSimpson} - thanks for the tip re Woodland Scenics, I'll check that out. You're right the bases are a bit plain at the moment and far too light in colour. My plan was originally to do a "desert look" gameboard so I did the bases light and sandy. Now I've painted my board it's come out a lot darker than I intended (as you can see from the tac squad pic) so I think I will go back and shade the bases to match, maybe add some grass to both the minis and the board. (or a river of milk... om nom nom nom)
@Valkyrie and Jamunition - thanks!
@Giant Peanut - you're very kind, I thought the face on the sarge was a bit blobby and thick when I looked at the photo! - he looks better in real life though... honest... - faces are the only bit that I don't usually do ink washes on, instead I basecoat in dark flesh, then I make mixes using dark flesh, elf flesh, bronzed flesh and bleached bone - basically just mix em up until I get a shade that I like for working up through the highlights. Nice work. That speeder looks a bit over the top with the scouts piling on it as a transport, but it works and makes the speeder look different which is nice.
Any tips for getting such a crisp line dividing the halves of the mini. I'm about to attempt a quartering scheme, and I am dreading picking it because freehand straight lines are not a strong point for me when I paint.

Hey wpgguy - no world-changing tips for getting a straight line I'm afraid, but I find that it helps to paint in one smooth stroke wherever possible rather than trying to "blob" it in. If your hand is a bit shaky, you could try holding the mini in a clamp of some sort and then using your free hand to help steady your brush hand perhaps? For larger models such as the Speeder and the Whirlwind, you could try frisket - this is a low-tack masking film commonly used in airbrushing - you can mask off one half and then paint in the other nice and straight that way, but make sure you have it stuck down quite tightly near the edge and don't use too much paint in one go, as capiliary action will not be your friend if any paint can creep under there. Wait until the paint is properly dry before pulling off the masking. My Speeder was done using a brush without any masking off, but the Whirlwind was done with Frisket over the white and an airbrush to lay on the initial blue coat.
Also - the Speeder is a Landspeeder "Storm" - lots of minis hanging off it made it a very long job to paint, but the finished model is quite cool. Only proble is, I've glued them in place, so for use on the gaming table, after the scouts have disembarked, I'll just have to remember that they're no longer on board (or do another unpopulated speeder to swap in I guess!)

Always happy to see people putting in the work for a halved scheme. Unless your color choices are painfully mismatched, even a half-decent effort will look all the more impressive (and I'd say you've passed the half-decent mark a while ago). The shading on the blue half of your Whirlwind is especially good, I think.
That said, I'm really not a fan of the blue shading on the white half. I see what you went for with the whole unifying colors thing, but it just doesn't work for me. The basing could also use some work - some look like gravel, some look like leftover oatmeal. Oh, and you forgot to drill out the barrels. Pure oversight, I'm sure.
A solid effort, all around. A few significant points keep me from really loving these, but much of that is attributable to differing taste. No shame in putting these on the table.

I'll never be able to comprehend just how people can miss out edge-highlights and pull it off... that Rhino, by my usual logic, should look awful for having such large flat spaces with no highlights and yet it looks gorgeous... The whole army does, how on earth do you manage to not make them look flat and rubbish? Toning? The colour scheme?

Damn. I was hoping that I could figure out a way to block off the white sections in order to prevent paint from spilling over onto it. I will keep the frisket in mind for the vehicles when I do them up though.

There is a Japanese modeling company named Tamiya that makes a really good paint tape that works great with acrylics, and doesn't pull off any dry paint or leave any residue.

I have Eagle Warriors as well, they are a terrific chapter if you like primary color schemes. Your models look very nice, very clean painting. I use regal blue on the dexter side of mine, I like it a little deeper shade.
A split paint job isn't very difficult if you have a steady hand and good brushes, especially for individual marines. The areas to be split are pretty small and easily divided, the codpiece and cuiriass are easy. The helmet and backpack are a little trickier, but still not so bad. Vehicles are tougher, but marine vehicles are blocky and have lots of panel lines that you can reference when you are pulling a line with your brush. Dark colors go well over light, so paint the blue half second and use watered down blue and a good liner brush.

Thanks loads for the encouraging comments guys, you're all rather fabulous
@Krak_kirby - You've got Eagle Warriors too? - cool! - couldn't find any gallery posts from you so post a pic then, lets have a look!
@warboss / Edge / ChildofFenris - now you're making me blush...
@Hartford_Mike - I'd not seen the Tamiya paint tape before - think I might give it a try - the stuff I have was hideously expensive so you might have saved me a few quid there...
@wpgguy - looks like you're just going to have to go for it with the brush and see what happens - Krak_kirby makes a couple of good points that I agree with - dark on top of light, dilute paint. Take your time and don't forget to breathe... you can always paint over any bits you cock up...
@Henners91 - The tank was the first time I've really used my airbrush in anger, so the style is a departure from my usual, I would say. I think the nice deep blue owes quite a lot to the Vallejo "Model Air" paint that I used in the brighter tones - it has a lovely luminous quality that really pops (I think it looks even better in real life than in the photo to be honest) - so it's much more down to the tonal qualities of that specific paint when laid over Mordian blue, combined with the nice smooth application you can get with the airbrush, than it has to do with any special skill on my part!
@Celtic Warrior - Heh, had to google Blackburn Rovers, that's what a huge footie fan I am - Nothing like Blackburn at all... the white and blue are on opposite sides so it's TOTALLY different!
@Oadie - Fair enough on the blue shading, to each their own - Something you might find interesting though: part of thinking behind this was to make the white stand out as a colder, starker colour, not just to make it match up to the other blue - I gather that washing powders that make your "whites whiter than white" actually do this because they add a tiny bit of blue: http://margaritastewart.blogspot.com/2009/09/laundry-tip-blue-makes-whites-bright.html
Basing and barrels - yes indeedy, going to have to sort these out, they've been pointed out before to me. I think I'll re-do all of them as a batch when I've got the squads finished - a quick drill and blacking out of the barrels, and a bit of shading and grass on the bases (the same applies to all my orks too so I'll just spend a boring day getting them all done at once).

Thanks Mike. I might have to give that tape a try. It's cheap enough and I think that a single roll would last for ages. I'm trying a freehand test model in the next little while, so we will have to see how badly that ends up.
