I have been issued the challenge by my 'old' school wargaming group (which I started 10 years ago and is still going strong!) to create an Ork Stompa from everyday items cheaply in lue of this economic climate - foolishly I accepted this challange.

I have thought about this all day and have come up with the idea of using an upturned plant pot for the actual body and a smaller plant pot for the head (basicly they are the same shape as an actual Ork Stompa) and possible small plant pot saucers for the feet, and a lot of plasticard but I am stumped on what to do for the large arms of the stompa.

Any ideas and suggestion on what else would be cheap and easy to build with would be very helpful and I think this will be a very interesting project.

Find some old electronics and use their guts for bitz on the stompa. Using some bike chain, you could make a chainsaw type weapon. Cheap pens can be used, the tops for missiles, and the bodies for gun barrels. Remember to throw away the ink, or IT WILL GET EVERYWHERE!!! Any legos that you might have would make good arms, especially the technic pieces. Once you add do-dads and gizmos, no one will know they're legos.

Just have fun, take it one small step at a time, and post pictures frequently. This will allow dakka to help you while in the project.

Have Fun

B.D.

I will be posting photos on this project once I draw up some plans and collect my stuff - old electronical bits and pieces are an excellent idea.

Anyone know where I can get hold of plasticard in the uk?

I've just been looking at some odds and ends in my house and I have found an old broken lap top of mine - the screen is in about three parts and part of its memory is fried so it used to run really, really slow. I also have some usused large guns from a battle wagon I made and loads of spare bits and pieces from my orks sprues.

I'm very much liking this idea, and all of the suggestions for gubbinz are inspiring. I hadnt given much thought to just how cheap a stompa could be thrown together.

Kudos on the idea, and geif pix as they come \o/

Well I reccomend starting with a small plastic bin, they are roughly the right size and shape. Then grab some plasticard (it's cheap to order it from the web) and the insides of eletrical items and stick them together. Make sure you use the plasticard to male lots of overlapping plates, as that makes it look so much better.

With the laptop pieces will be more than enought for that and remember cheap toys are also a good way to get good cheap guns

A small bin - interesting idea, I'm thinking that the overall model should be about 12 inches tall (1 foot), what does everyone think?

I would find a thermos or coffee cup as a base point. Build off that. It isn't wide enough, but it would provide support while the outer shell is all for looks. That might be 6-10 inches tall, plus legs, plus head would make for a right sized stompa.

Someting this sized:

I think the plastic bin or even styrofoam (very dense foam) would be easier than a pot. Chain weapons can be done with plasticard (two smaller sheets sandwiching two spiked sheets taht overlap) and guns are good from things like bottle tops (without the screw lid) and little pipes.

Good luck these always look good.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

Would a large/x-large pop/soda container that you get from a fast food restuarant work as well - is that about the same size?

Instead of getting nervous about this idea I'm actually getting pretty excited about it.

I would say their are about the same size, i would pick up two and nestle them inside each other to add more support. just remember to make it beefier.

To make it beefier then it would have to be paper-machie (sp) back to the good old Blue Peter days lol

Not beefier for looks, just for support. I would want the whole model to be supported by plastic about 5 mils thick.

layers of plasticard maybe or do they make plasticard that thick - doubtful as that is pretty thick for plasticard.

I think allowed and also write alloud what I think.

You also are allowed to think. Depending where you are however you might not be allowed to think aloud.

Tip - Check whatever plastic stuff you find for adhesion before you plan the rest of the model around it. If it ain't styrene then yer poly cement wont work, which basically leaves superglue or epoxy. Superglue will break off most smooth plastics with the slightest knock and though epoxy is better it still cannot bond plastics properly, so make sure you score/scratch up any joins prior to gluing.

I look forward to the outcome!

Edit - 1-2mm plasticard is more than enough for this. Structural strength will come through the err, structure itself.

You and me both - this will be my first scratch built model I have ever made so it will be very experimental.

The good thing with Ork vehicles is they don't have to be neat and tidy with many straight lines or exact curves.
