Hiya
Unsure whether this should be here or just the FOW forum?
I have just accepted build and paint commision for a number of German tanks (5 Panthers and 4 Stug variants) and I was wondering whether the resin bodies needed scrubbing like forgeworld stuff to get rid of the release chemical?
Also to get that German green on the box painted models is there a citadel analogue (like catachan green etc) or would you recomend another colour/range?
Any advice would be cool thanks.

Safe money says that all resin needs scrubbing. I can't think of any silicone/resin moulds that you can get away without some sort of release agent.

Stokleplinger is right on the money. I tend to wash/scrob all of my models before primeing, if for nothing else then to get any oils that were on my hands off the model.

Flames of War paints are available. They're Vallejo paints in special packs sold in groups of colours for the different armies. If you drop by Hobbycraft at Cribbs they were available in the modelling section upstairs.

The resin could be cleaned and I used to, but I read an interview with the main painter at battlefront and he said that he has never washed a single model. Once you have sanded down the bumps (wear a mask - resin dust = very bad for you), there should be no problem. I've only had one issue with paint not sticking to resin and that was the yellow aircraft resin they use, and was pulled off by some masking tape. A good primer will do a fine job for you.
As for paints, I presume you mean the dark yellow colour for german tanks? In which case you have two options - Vallejo Middlestone is the exact colour the flames of war people use for late war german tanks, and you can buy it in a spray from battlefront for late war german armour as well. Both of those together saves loads of time as middlestone usually needs 2 coats over black to show well. For green and brown on top of the yellow you can get away with camo or catachan green and a chocolatey brown depending on how accurate you want to be.
Desert yellow is the closest to middlestone IIRC but it is still quite different.

Cool Ta That's very useful, it would be interesting to see if I can get away with not scrubbing them as I don't want to! Would just a basic black spray prime them enough do you think? Or should I just scrub them? Thanks for the tips on paint colours as well that's really useful. I'll see if I can get some photos done and I'll post em up. Any other advice would be welcome!

I only ever black spray prime them before painting these days and have had no issues.
Only other thing I'd recommend is to go to the battlefront / flames of war online store and find pictures of what you are painting. You'll find more reference photos from every angle there than you will find anywhere else, and they can show you exactly how to fit some of the fiddly bits, and what colours things are supposed to be.

Hiya I did that original commission but I didn't get any photos, however he did ask for another batch to be done and I managed a few snaps of these: Tiger Platoon King Tiger Stug Boss Tank Half Tracks Family Pic If it was for me I might have done the camo effects slightly nicer and there are some slight issues with the builds of them (tracks too far forward on Halftracks etc) but they weren't for me ( LOL) and he wasn't paying top dollar. Let me know what you think and thanks for the good paint choice advice. EDIT: Oh yeah he asked to add his own decals, which is why there are no logos etc, I would like to see them after they were added as that kind of detail really helps things pop.

Those photos have come out pretty well under the flourescents.
I know how much you enjoyed assembling and painting them and it really shows on the models!
Image 10 in your photobucket account is a bit WTF, might have a new desktop pic for a while..

Thanks for the comments, Yes I'll add them to the gallery.
I painted these at Alex's shop BTW, and yep the photos weren't bad considering I wasn't really trying too hard etc.
I did enjoy painting them really, just not as much as I would if I were keeping them!
EDIT: Oh you mean the Talibanosaurus? Yep that's pretty awesome! I think I got linked to that off b3ta..

Right I've uploaded them to the gallery.
BTW with the middlestone spray primer you mention on your Late war german blog, do you find it having a powdery finish? As it would save me a lot of time to use it but I do inking and drybrushing on these and a powdery primer would be a problem.

Quite the opposite, it is a rather thick finish. It is VERY weather dependant so only use in a decent temperature with low humidity and use it from about 10" away. Always do a test piece first with it too. When it works it works amazingly though.

Ok
Got my next lot of commission tanks. Now that I'm all practiced painting German stuff and have invested in some rather good Battlefront 'yellow' spray primer I was not at all surprised to open the bag and pull out a platoon of Shermans....
I didn't have any spray in a good colour and someone suggested I use the army painter 'Army green' which looks like a olive drab kind of colour. Imagine my surprise as it dried goblin green....
Fine I thinks I'll ink it black and that will help only to have the ink pool on the upper surfaces and not in the cracks.....Alex pointed out that a good fix for this is to add a tiny bit of soap to the ink as it breaks the surface tension. Unsure of whether I was having the piss taken out of me I tried this to have it work well!
Then I overbrused the whole thing with catachan green (also some patches of dark angel were painted onto the base coat). Basically it was a disaster and I'm not wild about the final finish, however I think it will do for this guy. I'll do them differently next time, either with a different spray or just paint catachan over it.
You can see where the overbrush hasn't covered the 'goblin green' spray and where the ink was repelled from the surface, I have touched them up after these photos.
There are a couple more pics in the gallery if you really must.
I'll post up the German stuff next..
Automatically Appended Next Post: Back on firmer ground now, few. The guy commissioning these from me has so little attention to detail he has bought another unit of Brummbars, nevermind. The first time I did these it was my first go putting together any FoW stuff and I was surprised by the lack of instructions, locator lugs or general planning/design on some kits. I was especially surprised as there was so much work put into getting them all to be individual and detailed. The Brummbar was one of the worst culprits with immensly fiddly side skirts. This time round I just whacked em on with greenstuff...job done.
Spray primed with the lovely SP04 by Battlefront, very good stuff.
Thinned black ink (old type) wash.
Drybrused with the Middlestone Yellow paint (which matches perfectly with the spray I might add).
Stippledy stripes, drybrused on with terracotta and catachan green.
This is as far as I have got so far, I hope to finish them on Tues? I'll get some pics of them finished too.

Thanks, this is my 3rd batch of kraut tanks so it's probably the practice. :p I've never airbrushed anything but it looks great when done properly. Pity about the Shermans though, someone was saying that a lot of British Shermans were painted a similar light green. Apparently. Maybe this qualifies as a Blog now?
