start off with a black undercoat, as usual. Then apply a blazing Orange drybrush layer. The, drybrush Boltgun Metal. After that, you can add the color of the rest of your army, but with drybrush.

works very well, and I think it could work out as well, if you swap Blazing Orange with a copper tint.

Hope this helps

The Forgeworld weathering powders are really nice looking when done well... I think they have a PDF tutorial on there too.

I guess they are designed for tanks etc but i don't see why they wouldn't work on figures.

What I usually do is prime it black, then stipple with a dark orange (or at least the darkest orange you have that is not brown, a medium brown, stipple with a 70/30 mix of a brighter orange and the same medium brown, drybrush with a dark brown, drybrush with silver.
dry
Edit: I forgot you were painting tanks and not terrain . Whoops. I suppose you could go with drybrushing it brown, the orange, then silver, then your army colors...

Well for basic metal parts (CC weapons and guns) I base black, then drybrush metal on it. Then load up and brush with blazing orange but take pretty much all the paint off, and drybrush the orange in clumps. After that I stipple a little bit of deep reds in smaller areas. Geres a pic of what I mean. You can use pretty much the same technique on vehicles to spots you want rust. Basically you just put metal where the paint chipped away and started rusting. Work with it some and youll get the hang of it

Heres my style on a vehicle, but I didnt add any red.

Probably the easiest way to good looking rust effects is to use a sponge to apply the paint (I use the foam from the GW carry cases)
Start off with browns and work up to orange (I use the bright foundation paint one), the add a small amount of boltgun metal.
If you want to make it look really rusted, add a wash of blazing orangeand let it build up in all the cracks and crevaces.
Here's an example:
