As the title says, a friend asked me to post my newly-finished Wraithlord on Dakka for him to see. First, the primed model:

And after ~5 hours of work:

Just went for a decent tabletop standard; very little, if any, highlighting but I personally love how the blue came out. If I have time later I'll go back and paint the individual gems, maybe go for a brighter coat of yellow, and add an Iyanden decal to the faceplate.

What do you guys think?

Great 'Table-Top Standard', considering there's minimal highlighting involved. Good stuff!

Really nice

could i be cheeky and ask how you did it?
Think i might be going for Iyanden (although not 100% decided yet...)...so would be useful

Fantastic the yellow is nice and clean and the blue is even. Doing the gem work would help a lot if nothing else but a coat of a bright green on them and then a gloss coat.

PS - Brian dust your damn desk :/

^^^ Never ever.

Ironically the first thing you need to paint Iyaden (or any yellow-based army, really) is the Iyanden Darksun foundation paint. Two coats over black and there was little, if any, black leaking through. Even if there was, between the wash and more coats of Darksun it was pretty much taken care of.

I'll post the recipes for the painted areas, but keep in mind that this is very basic and is generally going for a contrast on a macro level, hence no highlighting:

1. First of all, start by priming black (I used Krylon Flat Black spray. Really good stuff and cheap as well). Don't forget to thin your paints.

2. The yellow:
a. Two coats of Iyanden Darksun. Go for a third coat if you think some areas need more coverage or if you watered down the paint too much.
b. 1 and a half washes of Gryphonne Sepia. I've seen other people use Devlan Mud or Badab Black, just depends on the look and contrast you're going for. I prefer Sepia, but that's me. By 1 and 1/2 I mean to wash the entire model the first time, and the go over the specific areas where the wash pooled unevenly or didn't pool at all. In retrospect I probably should've used Chestnut Ink...
c. Go over all the areas aside from the crevices or places where you have other colors planned with more Iyanden Darksun. This is meant to clean up any spillover from the washes.
d. Next, go over most of the same areas with a 1:1 mix of Iyanden Darksun and Sunburst Yellow. You might need to do a few coats of this; I did two myself.
e. Finally, go over the areas with pure Sunburst Yellow; basically just hit any areas that show(/are lit) up on the model when you have a lamp directly over it.
f. If you want to go the extra mile for highlights, use a 1:1 mix of Sunburst Yellow and Bleached Bone.

2. The blue, my favorite part.
a. Basecoat Mordian Blue. Should only take 1 coat or so.
b. Wash with Leviathan Purple in the crevices.
c. Cover non-crevice areas with Enchanted Blue. That's it.
d. Again, if you want to go further you can mix the Enchanted Blue with Ice Blue or Bleached Bone and highlight.

3. The Black
a. Go over any areas that will be black with Chaos Black (in case you accidentally got some yellow daubed on it earlier)
b. Paint the areas with a 2:1 mix of Chaos Black and Astronomica Grey
c. Wash with Badab Black.

4. The base - I'm not entirely pleased with how it came out, but here's how it went:
a. Basecoat 'stone' areas with Astronomica Grey, the little dot Dark Angels Green, and the 'dirt' areas with Bestial Brown.
b. Wash with Badab Black (I probably should've gone with Devlan Mud)
c. Drybrush with Astronomica Grey, and then Bleached Bone.

For anyone who's curious, the base is from Dragon Forge Bases' Lost Empire Series.

If you have an airbrush painting Iyanden becomes infinitely easier.

Start with a white primer
Basecoat the whole model with Sunburst Yellow via airbrush
Wash it with Gryphonite Sepia via airbrush
Paint all the joints and weapons Chaos Black
Regal blue on the blue bits with some light highlights of Enchanted Blue
Blood Red + Ardcoat for the jewls

Simple yet effective the airbrush makes getting a consistent yellow much easier
