For me, I have to admit, my favourite game was Curse of Monkey Island. Whilst I loved the previous two games, they didn't quite have the wit of TCoMI to me... I do admit though, I haven't played the 1st two recently enough to fully appreciate them. Soon though. Soon...

TCoMI was my favourite, too.

The third game is the best, it's just the right mix of everything really, plus Dominic Santiago does a great Guybrush.

Curse you. Curse you both. I now have to go dig out my copy and play it. And forget the sequence of events for the Swamps of Time all over again. Or whatever it was called.

To be on the safe side, play all three games and ignore the fourth completely. Insult arm wrestling..?

Yeah, I've yet to actually play the 4th game (!!!) but I've never really felt the need after seeing it...

It was a nice try, but the sub-par graphics, even for that time, paired with poor camera and controls ruined it for me. Plus they threw in insult arm wrestling to replace sword fighting. It's kinda the same, but not as fun for some reason. Plus the ending was kind of a rip from Flight of the Amazon Queen. /adventure nerd

From what I remember of the fourth one, it wasn't all THAT bad and there were at least still remnants of the humour.

And Dominic Armato.

Hmm.

Right, Armato, that's the guy. A good choice for voicing the hero.

Don't mind me, I'm really fond of point and click instead of walking about like that, with exception to Grim Fandango.

*drags self out of Dominic Armato-related thoughtfest*

On the subject of Grim Fandango... which we were... I still reckon that's one of the most underrated little games going. It was wicked funny and fiendishly difficult. But the humour really got me.

I thought Manny was a great protagonist.

The whole noir and death setting was a bit of a departure from the earlier light-hearted games they did, with a wee bit of an exception to Full Throttle and the Dig. I do have the feeling that Grim Fandango was aimed at a more mature target group. Plus it was one of those pioneers in putting the old point and click adventure into a proper 3D world, which might have turned quite a few people off. I know it took me some time to get used to it.

If only I could forget about that annoying "This little light of mine.." tune.

I agree, i thought Grim Fandango ("ask me about Grim Fandango") was a great little game, even for the relatively short time in which I played it. The name alone would've got me.
I loved the point and click method in the 1st three monkey island games, but I'm not adverse to it being in 3d, just so long as it still works...

Call me an old git, but I like the 2d stuff more really. Not all of it, but most of it, at least the games that let you explore and won't kill you for being careless, with the exception of Indy and the Fate of Atlantis. An adventure game with fisticuffs? Yes.

They've redone the earlier ones for the PS3 haven't they? Any of you guys had a look? Worth getting? (I mean, they're probably worth getting for the nostalgia value alone!)

On the 360 as well, I've played through the first again, plan on getting the second when I get some more credit on my LIVE.

The second was my fave previously, but for some odd reason I never got the third. Sounds like I missed out.

Hopefully they'll redo it as well at some point.

I'm going back to my parents this week and intend to borrow my pops' copy of the 1st two: HAPPY DAYS!

I completely agree though, despite loving many modern games, when it comes to Monkey Island I prefer the more characterful 2D graphics, particularly in the 'Special Editions' and Monkey Island 3.

The 3rd is probably my favourite, but it's a close call. You certainly have missed out to be honest though Morathi.

Also, the beards (good job!) on your avatar are kind of freaking me out...

The remakes are okay and you can switch between old and new style with the press of a button. Only down side is that when you play old style there are no voices!

I might have to prod around in a bit and procure these wonders for myself.

More excuses for procrastinating. Do you think my editor will accept the excuse 'I missed my deadline because I am Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate!'?

Curses.

I was good and well behaved and wrote last night instead of downloading the Monkey Island games. So much for my rebellious streak.

I have yet to play the third game, but I'm mainly waiting for it to get a revamp (if it hasn't already). I played the first Monkey Island, and I was hooked on its facepalm-inducing humor from the start. (The root beer made me headdesk) I don't think I really liked the second one though, to be honest. I was confused the whole way through, and it just got very, very convoluted - especially with a massive inventory of items.

I did enjoy the Tales of Monkey Island series they did a while back - as a great fan of the original game as well as the Sam and Max games, it was a lot of fun to play. And a bit depressing during the last game (Rise of the Pirate God). Awesome series as a whole, and a lot of great humor.

Oh, wow! Sam & Max! I have memories of going to the biggest rubber band ball... is that from Sam & Max? They all blur into one in my poor head.

Point and click adventures really were a lot of fun.

Yeah, biggest rubber band ball was Sam and Max. That was also a great game! Those really were they days. I'd take them over CoD any day. I so loved the humour of Sam and Max!

I can't imagine them doing a remake of Monkey Island 3 any-time soon, it's graphics are cartoony, not pixelated liked the previous games. I'd argue it to be the most refined of the games, so I'd definitely recommend the third one, updated or not...

Was the third one with the infernal Swamps of Time puzzle? It's been so long since I've played any of them. I seem to remember being perturbed by that positive pain in the posterior piece of puzzling postulation that was in that game.

Rubber chicken. There was a rubber chicken involved. And a toy gun or something.

Nope, you're thinking of the 4th.

3rd was still 2D, involved Captain Rottingham, Murray the Talking Skull, Elaine being turned into gold and other stoooof...

Murray was in all of them, wasn't he?

I remember Elaine being turned into gold, though, definitely. Best thing she did all through the series.

Haha! Awww cheers, that - seriously! - means a lot, particularly from a Black Library-an and yourself! I have to admit, probably my proudest moment on Dakka so far.

Was he? I can't remember Murrary in the first 2 games? None-the-less, I loved the third game, including Elaine's attitude in it. Seemed more humorously stroppy than she was in the previous ones to me... I do love the 3rd game!

Ahahah! I just read that Star Wars Unleashed 2 has an unlockable Guybrush Threepwood costume! That's mega!

(Also, I mistyped that as 'Star Wars Unleased', which is obviously some sort of real estate simulator and wouldn't be very interesting at all).

Only in Secret. In Revenge the voices are also in the classic mode. Though I have to say, there were some weird exclusions in the Special Edition of Revenge.

And I think what I hater most about Escape from Monkey Island is how they complety screwed up the plot and LeChuck.
