This is my first time using Vassal so I am starting to get the hang of how it works. I abstracted the board from the picture onto it, we had no towers on it when we played though. If anyone has any tips or tricks on how to better represent things in Vassal please let me know, I did my best estimating distances, so if they are off once in a while it is due to my inconsistency not a change in the game. If one of my opponents reads a game and I miss something, please let me know I am going from pure memory on all these.
Table 28 – Mission – Spear Head
Primary: Break Through – Scoring: The objective is based on having a higher differential score than your opponents. Players subtract the number of their units within 18” of their own board edge from the number within 18” of their opponents board edge.
Secondary: Victory Points – Major win (750 point differential), Minor win (350 point differential)
Tertiary: Rush Your Opponent – Player with the closest unit to their own table edge loses.
Tactical Bonuses:
+1 if you opponent has no units with 18” of your table edge,
+1 if you double your opponents Victory Points,
+1 if your whole army is within 24” of your opponents table edge.
Deployment:
Modified spearhead dividing the board into quarters by drawing a line from each opposite corner, deploy to the short table edge quarters.

I went to my table and greeted my opponent. He looked eerily familiar to me but I couldn’t place him. He introduced himself and when I mentioned this he said he was Darkwynn from
BoLS! I was excited to get the chance to play him and went into my usual spiel about
SoB Faith powers. He was familiar with most of them which is to be expected, but a bummer since it is nice to have the element of surprise. We chatted a bit as I setup and my first impression was he is a nice guy.
The deployment was a bit strange for this mission, with the board being split in quarters with diagonals from the far corners. I chose the right hand side of the board (pictured below from the tournament but the rest will be in vassal). I deployed forward since I needed to get into my opponents deployment zone. Right at the 12” line while Darkwynn outflanked his scouts and deepstruck his guard with librarian, priest and Astorath and his Assault squad. The other combat squaded to sit in terrain. He rolled Red Thirst for the Assault Squad and Scouts.
Turn 1:
I moved forward with everything popping smoke along the front line. My first priority was the attack bikes and I shot an Exorcist at them, scoring 2 unsaved wounds and instant killing both. They passed their check (much to my chagrin). The other Exorcist fired at the Baal but failed to penetrate its armor.
Darkwynn turbo boosted his attack bike and took some pot shots with his Devastators, Lascannon and Baal. He managed to wreck an Exorcist with his Baal as I foolishly left its side armor exposed. The Razor also moves flat out.
Turn 2
I continue to move forward and do the Rhino Shuffle. I disembark a
SoB squad in preparation for a blown Razorback but am disappointed as the Exorcist only stunned it. My flamer squad is in for some hurting the next turn. One Immolator took off after the Baal. The other Flamer squad takes out the combat squad in cover with assistance from the Canoness’s Inferno Pistol.
Darkwynn failed all his reserves rolls which left his board pretty sparse. He disembarked his combat squad and moved up his attack bike to stun the melta Rhino. An assault into the
SoB squad caused them to lose combat and then flee as they failed their
ld 9 book test! They would flee the remainder of the game while being cleverly egged along by the assault squad. (it just occurred to me here that I could have regrouped them using Light of the Emperor in this case, because it allows you to ‘ignore all restrictions’ which would include being within 6” of an enemy. I normally only think of the below 50% restriction). The Baal fired at the Immolator but failed to score any significant results and the missiles/lascannon blew my footslogging Canoness’s ride.
Turn 3
I move up the embarked flamer squad and fire at the missile launchers. I take out 3 of 5 but am standing right in front of them. The other
SoB squad reembarks in their Rhino and moves towards the other squad just in case. The canoness hides behind a rhino, out of range of the
dev’s. The Exorcist takes some shots at the Razorback but fails to injure it. I double back with my assault canoness to prepare for deepstrikes. I try to tank shock him out of 6” of my
SoB squad so they can get back into their Rhino, but misjudge the distance and am left within range so they flee. The Baal hunting meltas blow it up with their shots and cheer.
Darkwynn gets all his reserves in except the scouts. His assault marines deepstrike near my fleeing squad and melta the Immolator, Immobilizing it. The Sanguinary Guard come in and are short of Melta range. The attack bike stuns my rhino again with a penetrating hit leaving it stuck.
Turn 4
I finally just disembark my melta squad and kill his bike. I whiff with my Exorcist and it looks like it is going to be in trouble. My Canoness and friends move around a bit in cover but are too slow to get off a charge. I believe I missed both Melta shots at the Guard but I may have been careless with their shooting.
The outflanking scouts arrive. The Exorcist is within 12” of the board edge and is assaulted by some scouts while the others come in right next to my board edge to score objective points. Sanguinary guard assaults hit my Canoness and the Immolator and I go invulnerable while Astorath gets unleash rage. I lose all the Celestians to high initiative attacks while the Immolator is immobilized so the scouts can wreck it with their melta bomb. With only my Canoness left she gets +2
str on leadership and instant kills Astorath before failing a 2++ save and getting hit with a power fist. They made their points back, but I was hoping for a bit more luck on 3++ saves…I guess you cannot complain when they eat that many power weapon attacks. The two
devs fire frags at my disembarked squad but fail to cause significant damage. The Razor goes flat out and hides by a pillar while its squad hooves it toward my Immolator.
Turn 5
I reembark in my Rhinos and make for the board edges while taking some shots at the
Dev’s to kill them off. I move my Celestians back into the Immolator to protect them from harm and my squad keeps on fleeing.
Assault squad kills off celestians and immolator, move outward edge with scouts, fires with his razor but doesn’t hurt anyone
Turn 6
Separates squads into units and lets my guys flee, I am out of position to do anything and he gets the primary and seconday objective. We tie on Victory Points so I score 7 for the round, ouch. It is a good thing I killed Astorath!
Score – 7 Points
