In the Wasteland

Hi everyone.

I need some help here. At school, I study Trade, Business, Economy, etc... Now, We have to set up our own mini company. This school year we have to set it up financially, and next year they allow us to actually sell. This subject is a two year long term, and If I pass, I'll have my degree for that subject (obviously), and I'll be able to set up my own company when I am done with school. We have to sell calenders next year. Now, as I said before, we need to set it up financially. We have our business plan, and now we need to do some market research. We need to have at least 20 files with questions towards the people. (see under text) This has to be done by Monday, and I kinda forgot about it. So if you could just answer the following 5 questions, that would be great.

1) Do you have a Calender at home? Or do you find yourself in need of one? Would you buy it from a company set up by students?

2) Which theme would you like to see best on a calender?

- Cars
-Flowers
-Famous persons (singers, music bands, actors, sportsmen,...)
-Animals

3) If not any of the above, what theme would you like to see on a calender? (free coice, but nothing related to wargaming please.)

4) What location do you think is best to sell the calenders?
(Restaurant, Pub, second hand market, grocery store,....)

5) What price are you willing to pay for a calender? (in Euro's please)

That were the questions. Please help me with this. Note, even if you don't like any of the given choices at question 2, you still have to pick one.

Thanks in advance.

In answer to your questions

1)I have on at home and it is regularly used.

2)None of the above but they are all popular.

3) Artists and art, (ours is a hopper calender) famous places, geographic locations something nice to look at.

4) Somewhere with high footfall where people are happy to shed their cash, supermarkets, hyper markets, shopping precincts.

5) I would be happy paying 12 euros for something I liked.

I think a question to ask would also be : what do people use their calenders for. For example I put lots of appointments and dates on ours so a bit of space to write per day/date is excellent. Some calendars do not offer enough space.

1) Do you have a Calender at home? Or do you find yourself in need of one? Would you buy it from a company set up by students?

Actually, no. My Droid handles all that stuff for me. If I thought the student company was a cause worth supporting I could probably part with a donation without taking a calendar.

2) Which theme would you like to see best on a calender?

Scantily clad, sexy women. Though let's see, on a student calendar? Maybe just some cool, general photography.

3) If not any of the above, what theme would you like to see on a calender? (free coice, but nothing related to wargaming please.)

See above

4) What location do you think is best to sell the calenders?
(Restaurant, Pub, second hand market, grocery store,....)

Oh boy. Hmmm... I'd say anywhere that has a high flow of people, but I would avoid pubs if I were you.

5) What price are you willing to pay for a calender? (in Euro's please)

If I felt the cause was worthy, I would pay a maximum of 10 US dollars for a student-made calendar, or 835 Japanese Yen.

Somewhere in south-central England.

You need to segment the market.

You will not manage that by asking questions of anonymous wargamers on the internet.

Go to a calendar shop and crib their ideas.

Vik: thanks!

Kilkrazy: there's wisdom in that. But this is just something we need to do, you know. I think this first one is just to teach us how to set up a research. We'll probably do this again, but this one's for marks.

1) Do you have a Calender at home? Or do you find yourself in need of one? Would you buy it from a company set up by students?
No, I don't have a calendar at home. I have one on my phone, so no I don't need one. However, I would buy one to support students, depending on the cause they were representing. If it was just to generate cash, or to support the Student Union then my answer would be 'no'. If it was to raise money to help cancer research or something then the answer would be 'yes'.

2) Which theme would you like to see best on a calender?

- Cars
-Flowers
-Famous persons (singers, music bands, actors, sportsmen,...)

I once had an awesome calendar of Queen. In fact, I would quite like a calendar of HM The Queen, come to think of it! 'Famous persons' then, I guess.

3) If not any of the above, what theme would you like to see on a calender? (free coice, but nothing related to wargaming please.)
I have heard of Universities here making charity calendars with nude pictures of students in them - sort of like the film 'Calendar Girls'. Tasteful, not porno.

4) What location do you think is best to sell the calenders?
I would say a supermarket would be your best bet. Also, a calendar/greetings card shop. People are in there to buy stuff like that anyway.

5) What price are you willing to pay for a calender? (in Euro's please)
around £5? So, 7(ish) Euros.

Around this time of year, Calender Club have it all sewn up tighter than a Ducks Arse in the UK.

Seriously, people who run our one? Open for 4 months of the year. They take so much money, they 'holiday' the other eight.

What he said. But thinking about it a Wargame themed calendar might just be a good idea. A dozen close up photos of miniatures covering everything from historical to fantasy would make a good conversation starter. Might help to find some new players too.

Well, I don't think there is anything like Calender Club in Belgium. I haven't seen them before. As far as I know, people buy them in a book/magazine shop.

I have a calender, and I regularly use it. Go for flowers or animals. A theme I would like is pictures from state/national/whatever you call them over there parks, corresponding with the month. So December could have a frozen over stream, with a snowy, undisturbed bank. October could have a picture from atop a hill, showing all the trees have turned colors. I would pay 5-10 Euros for a decent calendar. Make sure the spaces are large enough to write in.

1. I get a calander some years. But I've done without for the past while.

2. I'd go for cars out of these four.

3. Tasteful hawt chicks. Sci-fi art. Video games based (I've had a few of this last kind although they generally come free with mags)

4. some sort of supermarket or mall type thing.

5. 7 Euro.

1) I do not have a calender at home but yes I do find that I having one would be beneficial. Yes, I would buy one from a company of students.

2) If I HAD to choose from the given list then Famous People. If I need to be more specific then a collage of famous persons in computer geekery would be nice, Charles Babbage, Linus Torvalds etc, I've never seen one of those.

3) Steam Punk art or else see the end of question 2.

4) Why choose one? Limiting your self to one market is a sure fire way to fail. Especially since (with some extra effort) this could be done as a Turn Key style operation. I'll explain how in 4b.

4.b) I read above that you are expected to give the money to charity when you go into production next year. Solicit the charity you intend to support for their signed permission to promote the fact that all proceeds from sales will go to them, you should start this process now and make it clear to the organization that this is a school project and make sure they are aware of the start date of sales. Once obtained you can contact businesses you intend to sell these at one by one and ask if they are interested in supporting this drive, they will be more interested in helping you once they are sure that you aren't running a scam. Once you have permission from all parties involved you simply drop off the signs and the calanders and (here's the good part) That Businesses Employees Sell The Calanders For You. My team and several others were hands down wrecked in a competition by one girl (on her own) who did something simular to this in my Junior year highschool economics class. I literally mean by an order of magnitude. If you do this CYA with the paperwork and don't do anything to get in trouble.

5) A quick search on Amazon.com shows that most calandars go for between $10 and $15 US some quick math later call it 10 Euro as the going rate. We choose the upper end of the curve because you are doing this for charity. People are willing to support charities so if you're setting the level of their contribution do so with the charities interest in mind. The exception to this is if for some reason you become obligated to set your prices in stone if that is the case then anywhere between 7 and 9 Euro would be decent.

Side Note: There is a lot that has to be done with the idea I presented in 4b, especially because I don't know the speific laws regarding charities in your country so you WILL WANT TO consult somebody before considering this. But keep in mind that this extra work looks fantastic on a resume as well as allowing you access to a larger market without the need to actually be there.

Well, that was some good advice. I don't know what charity organization we are giving it to. The school decides that. I'll ask that tomorrow. My teacher will give us some extra tips for that.
