I felt like posting the experimental rules for a fun custom character I created. I have designed this character as a cheap, fun support character for chaos, much like an evil Pedro Kantor. This ruleset essentially allows a player to use their Chaos Codex in a new way and field a fun, infiltrating army. This ruleset should also be useful for Alpha Legion and Night Lords players.


Thanatus, Shadow Lord of Black Legion

Wargear: power armour, bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades.

Gauntlet of Destruction: This archaic relic was forged during the golden age of technology. The gauntlet is a master crafted powerfist that strikes at I2 instead of I1.

Phoenix: This weapon was scavenged from the dead hands of the Warhawks Chapter Master during the 5th Black Crusade. The weapon is a combi-flamer with hellfire rounds.


Special Rules: Fearless, infiltrators, independent character

Unholy Protection: The dark gods have a plan for Thanatus and will not let their minion pre-emptively perish until his purpose is fulfilled. Thanatus has a 3+ invulnerable save.

Shadow Tactics: All Chosen count as scoring.

Shadow Guard: Any army that includes Thanatus may purchase up to 1 unit of Shadow Guard. Shadow Guard count as regular chosen except with the fearless USR. Shadow Guard do not benefit from Shadow Tactics and are not scoring. Shadow Guard do not use up an Elites slot in the FOC.

Thanatus must deploy with his Shadow Guard at the start of battle and may infiltrate with them as well. The unit may purchase a Land Raider dedicated transport instead of a rhino.

Interesting, he seems fair, add his own little back story too, definitely a good idea.

The character currently doesn’t have a back story aside from the fact that he fought in the 5th black crusade and presumably killed the Warhawks chapter master and swiped his combi-flamer from his corpse. Aside from this, I reckon his back story would be something mysterious with limited info available to both the reader and characters within the 40k fluff.

One idea would be to make him one of the four chosen of Abaddon, with Thanatus in charge of covert operations for Abaddon.

I like it, maybe a 4+ instead of a 3+ invulnerable (Only greater daemons of tzeencth / SS termies have that iirc) but meh I don't think it's a huge deal.

Vulkan has a cape that confers a 3+ invulnerable save and that’s where I got the idea from. I worked the cost of the 3+ invulnerable save into his point costs and the character pays a premium on all special abilities.

The power fist is great but kinda pointless what with the I2 bit. It hardly makes a difference unless you are fighting other power fist models or complete retards. Against Power fist models though, its great

Yeah. I designed the weapon to not be overly powerful just a little bit better than the average power fist. I envisaged the weapon useful in situations where he can fist someone and instant death them before they have the chance to instant death him. I gives the player a tiny amount of extra assurance when using him.

The character's real strength is his is ability to make chosen scoring and infiltrate in a Land Raider with a unit of shadowguard
