So if there is a brood of 2 carnifexes, joined by two primes, the primes can hide behind the carnifexes and claim a cover save for the squad.
1. Is the cover save legitamate? I know that since half the squad would be in cover that the fexes would claim a save
but
how can the primes claim a save by being in cover by their own squad?
and if possible, could I have some rule book citation, because a friend of mine won't believe me otherwise.

The Primes could not hide behind the Carnis they are attached to, but could hide behind other units, or any other cover providing terrain and the Carnis would get the Cover save. You are correct in your initial description, but only half correct. Page 21 lays out Cover saves, and page 22 lays out the ignoring your own unit.

Kommisar Kel has answered this as well as anyone can.
I hate to be a grammar nazi here, but I believe the correct pluralization of Carnifex is "Carnifexen."
