The Lord and the Thain go in the Horde, flanked by Hammerers and Longbeards. The Runesmith often goes with the Longbeards for the greatest protection (least likely to be run off the board/lower priority ranged target than hammerers or Horde). This works very well so far, but I continue to have mild issues with orcs (charged far too often second turn , even setting up <6" from the edge. Stupid movement spells...) GW army wide gives my opponants the fear, and the Miners are absolutely kings when it comes to flanking, WM killing, and hitting sensitive spots. I wanted to make this army a close combat one after so many years of dwarves having a reputation for being a gunline army.
Any further advice?

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

Looks like a good army. You have artillery, anti magic and decent characters all fielded. Backed up with some strong infantry blocks. I prefer giving dwarf characters more survivability but if the extra damage works for you then go with it. Keep us posted how it fares. I like reading battle reports on army lists drawn up on here.

I keep going back and forth on Slayers ("Slayer are best!") and a good Daemon Slayer load out (runed up for monster/tough character killing) since in this edition heavy armor may as well be tissue paper I find I rarely get armor saves to begin with. May as well take some hard hitting crazy dwarves...

Sorry just having a quick look, but I noticed your thane has 2 runes of stone. I don't think you can have multiples of that rune.

Boogey's correct. He also isn't permitted a shield. One of the trials and tribulations of an older army book.
Otherwise, pretty tasty. Dangerous shooting and plenty of blocks. I'm not a big believer in expensive runic weapons, but you may get some mileage out of that one.
Adamant and the miners are also atypical choices- I'm interested in hearing how they work out for you.

The Rune of Adamant works great against people using s5 or 6 attacks (which are VERY common now adays) and people who are "merely" S4. Its very much like increasing one's armor save, though expensive. It means a model needs to be s8 before it wounds you on 2's, and this counts for alot.
Miners work very well, and I have yet to play a game where those dusty old stunties fail to make up their points. From wiping out unit after unit of shooting troops, grabbing objectives, hitting rear and flanks of units, or emptying buildings on the enemy's side of the board, 8th ed has provided a real renaissance for this unit. I wanted to make them work so much, but the 6" range of them limited the unit too much. Now that they have a max reach of 13" (!) they are priceless and quickly get into the fight. I've seriously thought about getting a hero into that unit, but their nearly Fast Cav type role makes me want to keep my fighty heros on my front lines where they belong.
Those fire bombs they can get are total pants, however, and need to be changed when (if) they redo the army book.
That rune weapon sees alot of use against Elves especially. When it comes to Orc or Ogre killin', I have another nice little load out I stick with instead.
Really? No shield? Oh yeah, that was a ridiculous restriction of old BSBs... Ugh. Fine, I'll go for the 1+ AS rune and a good ward.

In general, I'd rather have a re-rollable 1+ save for less points than the +1 T, but maybe I haven't given it a good chance...
I'm not saying miners *can't* do those things. Just that they're doing them at the earliest in turn 3. But I should probably play with them a little, see if I can't enjoy some success.
I would take a stack of 6 in 7th for war machine and table quarter purposes.

I like the list a lot. You've got hard-hitting stuff, and plenty of it.
The Lord seems a little vulnerable to me, but I have learned that, though they may seem capable of it at first, it is impossible to build a Dwarf Lord that can reliably go toe-to-toe with a Bloodthirster and live (for long). That's the Dark Elf lord (stupid, stupid, stupid). Anyway...
Why two extra attacks, instead of +1 to hit and one extra? On average, the math usually works out better.
And I'd agree that the Thane needs some more protection. A 1+ 4+ would be solid.

I'll take a look at the +1 to hit and +1 atk idea. If the math supports it, that's the one I go for. I prefer to have the averages on my side. Currently he's kitted out for getting more kills than character killing, so that's why the extra attacks. Hitting on 2's and wounding on 2's is nice for clearing out those filthy neckers and round ears, though... I never bother with that GW rune, though. It seems utter bunk to me.
The Thane does need more protection, but rarely does anyone bother with character sniping in my area, so he's been okay so far. Upping character points has to come from my troops, which worries me, as the mix seems great right now. I'll jigger things about, see what I can find.
Well, in 8th ed I'v found one must be careful about when to commit one's cavalry. If you don't have cavalry of bloody murder (IE Chaos or VC), you have make certain you get flanks, all the while protecting yourself from shooting. This usually means Cav hits about turn 3 anyway. So, utilizing my little dusty rock hounds in the same fashion, I find them to be very effective. I use 15 as a safety buffer on kills, so that if I hit the rear of a unit, I am still providing disruption even it they manage to nail a few. This allows them to be multi purpose, and not solely used for warmachine hunting. I think if I were to only do that, i'd just use Rangers, but Miners are fluffy, fun, and a naughty little surprise for when my opponant thinks his lines secure...
Also: never charge a Chaos Cannon it... never ends well for the dwarfs.

Oh. Yuck. I believe it.
Yeah, Kragg the Grimm is a weird rune. 20 points, just to have a magic weapon that is also great? And why can only one guy in the army have it? I think most people go with it because it's cheaper than 2 Runes of Cleaving, and a single Rune of Stone brings your armour back to a 1+.
The lack of character sniping is really bizarre. Honestly, he's your most important character. Much more than your general. If he goes down, your whole line will (eventually) collapses. Might I suggest taking some warriors out of the 20-dwarf block? I think 15 would still serve their purpose (flank-charging and redirecting, I assume), and maybe keep them even lower on the radar. Or maybe your opponent will hit your weakest point and wipe them off the board. Who knows.

The lack of character sniping surprises me too. I'm usually trying to find that sweet spot of spending just enough on protection to discourage swinging on the BSB, but not spending too much.
Kragg the Grim has the Master Rune, not so much to prevent another model from taking it, but to prevent it from being combined with other master runes...
