I love my assault marines. They always seem to survive the longest and destroy the most. When you give the sergeant a power weapon and storm shield he has a 3 plus invul. so I have had him take down some pretty tough targets. They can also stay in cover the best while on their way to the objective by jumping over buildings. And they can move 12".. which everyone knows i'm sure.. but i love. And if it fancy's you, you can deepstrike them. So they are very versatile indeed.

Would be nice to have Pathfinders there.

I personally like Dire avengers, Grey Hunters, and Bloodletters the most.

Grey Hunters because they do everything well, and they do it like Russ intended! Melta? Ok! Plasma gun?! OK! Counter Attack! HECK YEAH! Accute sencese? Yes please! they are assualt/tac marines without heavy weapons and they rock! all around great for what they are!

I love Bloodletters because when there is only one feeling a person has when they get charged by them. Dread! no one. and i mean NO ONE! (ok, maybe daemon hunters) likes getting assualted by these nasty sob's!

and Dire avengers because they survive. and Thrive in battle, i have yet to loose my entire DA unit in any game, and only once have they actually taken casulties!

Personal favorite is the guardsman platoon. Mainly the amount of heavy weapons they can take.

Ork boyz. I have never run out of new things to do with them. I like them much more than IG or SM for their kitbash options.. and when kitbashing is exhausted i can always try painting them differently (i'm tinkering with wc3 fel orc redskins!)
I can't say they are the BEST troops, but they are are cheap and effective. They tend to draw a lot of blast templates though

Have to with my boys, the Grey Hunters. Lots of versatility, bolter, bolt pistol AND close combat weapon (for 2 attacks in CC, 3 on the charge) along with free Specials and the ability to take two, though at the price of not being able to take heavies. Take all that, throw on top of it Acute Senses and Counter-Attack, and it's a pretty decent Troop choice for 15 points a model.

A close second, though, is the humble Guardsmen Infantry Platoon. Primarily because you can cram over 2000 points into one, single troops slot (if you so desired).

Riviting tale chap!

And seriously Necron Warriors? I mean they're not horrible but you have to take a minimum of 20 so thats 360pts before you get anything else, it also sucks that your entire army can be phased out if enough of them are killed. (That and immortal metal warriors terror incarnate from millenia ago apparently run away and get sweepiing advanced)

Guard Vets for me then. They're a great unit to have on the table-ie they can actually hit-, and such a great opportunity for conversions (plus they also mean that I don't have to field bloody 100+ guardsmen to have a legal army¬¬). Just a bother than their sergeant can't take a lasgun anymore; hate losing those extra shots just because GW wanted to change the image of them to something more WWI-ish¬¬.

Thousand Sons. They are really cool from a fluff perspective, and, for me at least, always perform very well on the tabletop.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

I chose Guardsmen, Boyz, and the much underestimated Battle Sisters. For 11 points you get a 3+ save, a bolter, and stubborn. Toss in acts of faith, and I could build an army of NOTHING bu them. Just like Boyz and IG.

6000 points IG, Leviathins 8th company, (store regiment) 60% painted
4500 points Empire 80-90% painted!
2500 Ogres 2% painted
WIP Biker Battle Company 95% painted
2500 Points Isstavan Drop site massacre Iron Hands (still waiting for dat codex)
I managed to play a 1750 point game with minimal proxieing on the first day DE came out. go me!
The Gutterballers, a relatively successfull BloodBowl team

Look, Marines are at the top...

Sisters of Battle are hands down the best troop choice in the game. They are underpriced, have excellent armor, good leadership, and the best close range shooting in the game.

Why Inquisitorial Stormtroopers? Yes, they can take 2 special weapons with only 5 men, but Celestians can take 2 with only 5 troops AND give you a faith point AND they don't suck completely in CC. Also, Dominions can take 4 special weapons with just 5 troops. I see no reason why anyone would take Inq Stormtroopers over PAGK or Battle Sisters unless they're running a pure Inquisition list.
