Game: Capture and Control + Dawn of War
Deployment
I lost the roll off and Dave went first, he put his objective in a ruin on the left flank on his board edge while I board mine in the centre of the board on my table edge - away from any outflanking Genestealers!
Dave deployed a unit of 'Stealers in a ruin about 12" away from my own objective, he then deployed a Warrior squad with a Prime in a ruin mid field on the left flank.
I deployed nothing...
* Tactical Notes
With me not deploying anything Dave has lost a turn of shooting and assaulting; especially from that Genestealer unit on my door step.
My plan is to roll on 12" with most stuff, bring the Vindicators on the right flank and point them towards the 'Stealers half in area terrain of the ruin and then the other side of it. I'll bring Razorbacks forward with flamer squads and bail them out unleash flamer and twin-linked plasma while the rest of the tanks come in and snipe lascannons at the Warriors mid field in the ruin.
Turn 1
Dave rings his bugs onto the board, left flank sees Raveners, Tyrannofex hanging on the objective and a unit of Hive Guard. Centre field sees Hormagaunts, Termagants, Warriors and Hive Guard, both the latter units using the smaller bugs for cover. Right flank sees a unit of Hive Guard and the other 'Stealer unit.
No shooting or assaulting from Dave.
In my turn I roll both Vindicators on the right flank and curve them around to get LOS on the 'Stealers near my table edge. I roll on three Razorbacks on the centre fielding carrying a melta squad, flamer squad and flamer Honour Guard, the flamer Assault Squad has the Librarian attached to give shield power. Left flank sees the remaining Razorbacks with the Librarian attached to a flamer Assault Squad.
Shooting I roll for night fighting per shot which sees a Vindicator flatten those 'Stealers killing four of them, the same squad is shot by plasma and flamer leaving a single 'Stealer left who passes morale. Left flank doesn't do too good with night fighting rolls so I don't think anything or much fires, Dave passes cover saves on what got hit anyway.
* Tactical Notes
A not bad first turn and I've saved myself being shot at for a turn. I had to kill those 'Stealers which went down quickly thanks to the Vindicator, Razorbacks and flamers. Shame about night fighting rolls, could have I.D'd some Warriors mid-field if they managed to hit, ah well.
Plan next turn is to move up on the left flank blasting Raveners which will no doubt come forward and also finish that single 'Stealer off while the Vindicators work on the other 'Stealer squads.
Turn 2
Dave rolls for synapse on the Guard unit on the left flank which pass, the squad moves forward out of terrain along with the other 'Stealer unit. The solo 'Stealer moves forward to assault a Razorback while Raveners come forward with Hive Guard using a ruin for cover.
Dave blasts the Tyrannofex at a Razorback on the left flank scoring a single penetrating hit, I use shield but fails to save the shot leaving the tank crew shaken. He fires Hive Guard at another tank and scores weapon destroyed taking out a lascannon. Venom cannons fire from both Warrior squads at Razorbacks but do nothing while the Biovore fires a salvo at the disembarked flamer squad and Honour Guard squad, it scatters and lands by my Vindicator and a Spore is left.
No assaults.
My turn I load up the Librarian and flamer Assault Squad into the Razorback which moves away from the 'Stealer and pivots towards the Raveners, the Honour Guard stay out ready to burn the 'Stealer as their Razorback moves through terrain ok as the supporting melta squad move wihtin 3" of the Spore causing it to explode and do nothing. Razorbacks on the left flank move to engage the Raveners as the Vindicators reposition to get the 'Stealers on the right flank, one Vindicator goes through terrain and is ok.
Shooting I blast lascannons and plasma from the Razorbacks centre field at the Warrior squad causing two wounds on the Tyranid Prime and one on a normal Warrior. The single 'Stealer gets flame'd and dies. Several Raveners get instagibbed by lascannons as one takes a wound from plasma. Vindicators blast at the Genestealers both landing on target but only manage to kill one thanks to cover saves. I use a Razorback to lascannon the Biovore and I.D it.
* Tactical Notes
Ok the Vindicator shooting could gone better in terms of Dave failing cover saves but the tanks cannot help that, they both landed on target. The Raveners have been cut down but I can seem them assaulting my next turn, only three of them left though now and I should be able to melta them next turn, maybe. The Warriors mid-field have started to lose wounds, if I can wipe them out then Dave will have synapse problems on the right flank and also across the mid-field.
Plan is to engage and destroy the Raveners, once I've done that the next turns I'll speed up the left flank and pop smoke and then move onto the objective. I'll use the Vindicators to keep the Genestealers supressed and pop off more Warriors mid-field.
Turn 3
Daves Hive Guard pass synapse again and them and the Stealers move into the ground floor of a tower ruin. Raveners come forward as predicted ready to assault my Razorbacks. I think that might be about it.
Shooting the Hive Guard on the right flank blast a Vindicator but it passes cover saves as it's in area terrain using a ruin. Tyrannofex blasts the previously shaken Razorback, though I popped smoke in the previous turn and it makes all the saves while Hive Guard blast the melta Honour Guard tank and immobilise it. Hive Guard mid-field wreck the melta squads Razorback.
In assault the Raveners mass assault three Razorbacks scoring crew shaken on one; that's it.
My turn, I move the melta squad out the busted Razorback onto my objective, running to get them there. Honour Guard which killed the solo 'Stealer get back in their transport, it pivots through terrain and attempts to drive off and gets grounded, bummer. I attempt to move the Vindicator in terrain and it gets grounded while the other moves up to get LOS. I start moving Razorbacks on the left flank, another fails terrain test while one tank shocks the Raveners - they fail and fall back, the trio of Razorbacks move forward as one with two squads bailing out ready to blast with meltaguns and bolt pistol.
Shooting I blast the Raveners with melta, plasma and lascannons and after cover saves a single Raveners remains, as the squad had failed a morale test already thanks to tank shock it fails the morale test for 25% losses and falls back 8", with just a single Ravener it cannot regroup unless falls under synapse, which isn't going to happen. Vindicators blast the Genestealers and the blasts also catch the Hive Guard, one lands on target and kills several Genestealers and wounds a Hive Guard while the other scatters and misses.
No assaults from me.
* Tactical Notes
Ok it's going well and the left flank is getting surpressed, though to make that flank clear I need to wipe out the two Hive Guard hiding behind the other side of a ruin in between the two armies and nail the Trygon and then I can confidently move onto Daves objective. I also nailed that Biovore reason is because it was in the open and begging to be shot lol plus when I'm out the tanks it's the only threat with range, it can be annoying but it's nothing major. Was a bit crappy I immobilised several tanks, I guess tha Vindicator in terrain is Stealer food!
Plan is to use Razorbacks to steam forward and pop smoke, use the ones which are immobilised to lay down lascannon fire power on the Trygon - I'll try tank shocking those Hive Guard purely because they're in my path, worth a try.
Turn 4
Dave pulls his Hive Guard back on the left flank ready to nail a Razorback as he moves the Termagants and Hormagaunts forward as the 'Stealers move out the tower ruin towards the horde, the Hive Guard on the right flank fail synapse and must fire at the closest target; the immobilised Vindicator!
Shooting Hive Guard on the right flank fire at the wrong Vindicator in error, causing crew shaken. Warriors fire venom cannons again but don't do anything if I remember right. Hive Guard on the left flank pop a Razorback leaving a melta squad without a ride.
No assault.
I bail out the Honour Guard with flamers out the immobilised Razorback in terrain near my objective and send them packing towards the Termagants, the supporting flamer squad with the Librarian follows. Two Razorbacks speed up the left flank, one moves though terrain ok taking the same position as the other one, the one in front tank shocks the Hive Guard, the Guard death or glory and fail to stop my tank and one is mowed over. The shaken Vindicator I pull back towards my melta squad holding the objective to use a assault blocker in potential coming turns.
Shooting the two flamer squads kill off plenty of Termagants with flamer and bolt pistol. Melta squad busted out their Razorback on the left flank run forward taking cover behind terrain as the Razorback up front pops smoke. All other Razorbacks fire at the Trygon which gets cover, but loses two wounds. The immobilised Vindicator fires at the Hive Guard in cover, I cannot remember what happened here, not sure if it hit or not.
In assault Librarian and flamer squad and Honour Guard charge the Termagants with the Librarian casting unleash rage - Termagants get butchered by the Librarian and flamer squad before the Honour Guard get to swing, both squads consolidate back, though they're in assault range of the 'Stealers and Warriors mid-field.
* Tactical Notes
It's going well and I may have taken out a Termagant unit and will probably lose those two squads next turn but there wasn't a fat lot else those two squads were doing. Only thing I could have done is moved the Librarians Razorback up the left flank and blast the Trygon some more, the tank itself would have been assaulted next turn anyway.
Plan is I hope the Razorback which popped smoke can hold on, I'll be moving the Razorback behind to follow and support it and the Razorback which held the Librarian and flamer squad could move 18" up to support it.
Turn 5
Dave realises he has no troops on his objective so moves his Hormagaunts onto it running them and moves the wounded Warriors to support them. He backs up the solo Hive Guard on the left flank towards the Tyrannofex as the Trygon moves out of terrain to assault the popped smoke Razorback. Mid-field Genestealers and the Warriors in the ruin move to assault the two flamer units.
Shooting Dave blasts the Razorback with the Tyrannofex which hits both shots and the Hive Guard, all damage is saved via smoke. Warriors blast the Librarian and flamer Assault Squad mid field but but all armour saves made. Hive Guard on the left flank blast a Vindicator, I don't think they do anything as the only one shaken is the one from last time.
In assault the Warriors and Prime charge the Librarian and flamer squad, only the Librarian remains after the others get cut up by power weapons and the Marines fall back and the Sgt gets dragged down - the Librarian legs it 10". The Genestealers charge the Honour Guard but get poor to wound rolls getting one rending and a few other wounds, the Honour Guard survive and stay in combat killing a few 'Stealers. Trygon charges the Razorback following behind and causes some damage while the Tyrannofex and Hive Guard charge the smoked Razorback and crew shake it.
My turn, I move the smoked Razorback forward and contest the Tyranids objective. We had previously agreed to end the game during Daves turn as it was getting late and my missus was asking where I was. Angels win contesting Tyranids objective and holding there own.
Summary
The game didn't too bad, considering I don't like dawn of war deployment, but I guess it depends what army you're using. Though, the dawn of war deployment did hurt me by having the night fighting rule which meant the first turn shooting about 1/3 of my army actually managed to fire altogether. Though I cannot complain about the first turn killing a squad of Genestealers almost and clearing the way.
I think speeding up the left flank was a good idea and worked well. I perhaps should have moved up the Librarian and flamer squad instead of bailing them out ready to die next turn, they could have moved 12" and opened up plasma on the Trygon, maybe. The Vindicators did well with only a single shot scattering through out the game, though I did have bad luck immobilising three of my own tanks in a single movement phase!
Dave also had some bad luck with his dice as all he could really do to my tanks was crew shake them, he popped one and immobilised one too, in fact I immobilised more of my own tanks than him lol. I think his deployment hurt him, while synapse wasn't a issue even though Hive Guard did fail it, he really should have secured his objective straight away with troops and keep the Tyrannofex on it like he did. His mid-field deployment was ok using the smaller bugs to give cover to the Hive Guard and Warriors, but he would have been better outflanking the Genestealers and he wouldn't have lost a squad (almost) in the first turn, plus the Trygon could have swept down the right flank using the larger ruins for cover as he sat all game in a ruin getting cover and not moving until the Razorbacks come close.
