So I've posted some variations of this list and I've revised it and this is what I think will work well as an all comers list. Now I know it will probably get creamed in killpoints due to the vehicle drones rule but lets set that aside and not focus on that.

The main idea behind the list was to have a highly mobile force that plays contrary to the usual tau strategy of "stand back and shoot and hope they're all gone when the smoke clears". It's got 3 main tanks that are meant to kill armor and put down the pie plates on those less mech armies. The piranhas are tank hunters as well but their roles varies by the army I'm fighting and might be blockers up the field or against deepstrikers. 3 big objective holders/anti-infantry units for good measure. Suits for 2+ and light transport killing. What do you think?

Well there are a couple of reasons I took the bodyguard actually. One being that they cant single out the commander in close combat and that the shield drones can cover the guard in close combat, the other being the targeting array as trying to fit markerlights in this list was a nightmare, and lastly was their ability to take target locks and split fire at a range, which while not completely practical, does help against armies like dark eldar with lots of lightly armored vehicles. Nothing says "Hurray" like splitting 3 troop carrying transports with a single missile barrage and then making mash of their insides with a hammerhead pie plate.

*Shock*

You have a severe lack of broadsides in this list. Sure you have 9 fast fusion blaster moving around, but I find it is best at this points level to max out your broadsides.

3x Units:

3 Broadsides w/ A.S.S.
Team Leader w/ 2 Shield Drones

-825 pts (I believe)

Getting rid of the hammerheads and piranhas would give you 360 points. Given that you already have 3 devilfish:

3x Units:

Pathfinders (6)

-216 points total

You now have 144 points left. With those points, I would get SMS for your 3 devilfish.

84 points left...

I would get rid of all your body-goard, and your 2nd commander, and make your Commander bare-bones, with only a PR/MP/MT

609 points

3x units of Fireknives - 558 points

51 points to do with what you want...

So your list would look like:

Commander
-MP/PR/MT

Crisis Suit Unit (3)
-MP/PR/MT
Crisis Suit Unit (3)
-MP/PR/MT
Crisis Suit Unit (3)
-MP/PR/MT

Fire Warrior Unit (12)
-Leader w/ BK
Fire Warrior Unit (12)
-Leader w/ BK
Fire Warrior Unit (12)
-Leader w/ BK

Pathfinders (6)
-Devilfish w/ SMS/TA/MT/DP
Pathfinders (6)
-Devilfish w/ SMS/TA/MT/DP
Pathfinders (6)
-Devilfish w/ SMS/TA/MT/DP

Broadsides (3)
-A.S.S.
-Team Leader w/ 2 Shield Drones

Broadsides (3)
-A.S.S.
-Team Leader w/ 2 Shield Drones

Broadsides (3)
-A.S.S.
-Team Leader w/ 2 Shield Drones

-2449 points.

Much better, no?

I think the obvious answer to this would be no... its not better... in the slightest.

You basically took everything fast and mobile about my list and threw it to the wind lol.

9 broadsides? two units of pathfinders? This is so typical in tau player thinking. Even with A.S.S. broadsides still only move and extra 1-6" a turn, and that not going to outrun any deepstriker or ymgarl out there.
Not to mention that A.S.S. broadsides cant split fire, so have fun killing that one tank really really well lol. Besides what are you gonna do against nids or other swarm armies? die?

and pathfinders... well in an army that is always on the move... pathfinders dont lend much. omg wait you had 3 pathfinder units... thats even worse.

You made a great list, assuming your enemy has no mobility or deepstrike and just wants to sit there and take it.

I agree, mobile tau army is the best tau army.

Well, if you really want to eschew 9-side at 2500 (which, on the record, I believe is a mistake) I think I can drum up something for you.

So that gives you 7 tanks, mobile troops, mobile suits, pulse carbines for pin checks and lots of gun drones for various board movement control shenanigans.
