On a hate rampage.

Greetings mortals,

I recently got myself some death company, and have painted them up fairly well.
BUT.
I am still wondering whether or not its worth highlighting them, and if so, what with?
I know highlighting can make a mini look a thousand times more brilliant, but I don't want to spoil them

I have found mixing small amounts of white and black paint can give some nice subtle highlights just add small bits of white at a time until you get the colour you want, other then that codex gray works well usually

Essentially you are lining a black figure... whether it is Death Company, Legion of the Damned, Black Templars, or Black legion. It can be tedious but the out come is usually worth it.

While this can be done a ton of ways, for my DC I've gone to giving a base coat of Vallejo Black/Grey, Wash w/ Badab, then 1 hard highlight of Vallejo Light Grey (These are Vallejo Air colors). I find the Vallejo Air on the highlight to be just the right consistency for line work.

This is my DIY (counts as BA chapter)... so the color scheme is a bit different but I think you care about the blacks.

I prefer to mix black + bleached bone (or similar bone color) to highlight black. It gives a much softer highlight compared to using black + white (or ready-made grey).

Try both out and ask someone for an opinion

Arlington TX, but want to be back in Seattle WA

I would absolutely consider it time well spent to highlight your death company. Makes a significant difference. Attacthed is a pic of an unfinished Death Co Marrine I painted with highlights. My technique is this:

-Begin by painting a wide border around all the edges with a 2:1 mix of Chaos Black/Codex Grey
-Apply a 2:1 mix of Shadow Grey/Chaos Black only to the edges. Be as neat with this highlight as possible.
-Finally, take a 2:1 mix of Codex Grey/Shadow Grey and apply it with a very small brush only to the very apex of the edges. You want to avoid covering up the previous layers of color. This will give your model an eerie glowing looking (sort of )

Best of luck!

Adeptus battlegrey. Pull it back with some badab black so it's not as harsh, also has the effect of mitigatigating any stark lines that can look odd.
